Beardie you disappoint me (chrisv2010), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Come to think of it, the more you listen to the Drake, the more the pacing starts to make sense...it's meant to be kind of startling in its subtlety.

No feeling Antebellum at all.

Davek (davek_00), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

meant for tracks list, sorry folks (could a mod delete it?)

Davek (davek_00), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

basically want "suicide demo" to be twice as long (and it's already 8 minutes!)

tylerw, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

oh man sounds so much better than the 160kbps mp3s i had

~swoon~

xp REAL TALK

ullr saves (gbx), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

there is nothing "corny" about this record. the only people in the world who would even think about the cheesy musical references or whatever basically post in this thread

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:59 (thirteen years ago) link

really?

dude i love this shit and the jazzy flute licks on demo for sara walker would beg to differ

ullr saves (gbx), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:29 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i mean it totally codes as 'corny' for some ppl ... i just think its lame for ny times reviewers to take that tack, as those are the values of a certain niche of fans but certainly not the broad spectrum of people

challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:40 (thirteen years ago) link

well that's the thing, is that the only person so far that's called it corny is a lol college student who probably has no idea who or what these references are, just that they're the stuff that crops up on dadrock radio. so it's not niche music nerds who are acknowledging the corniness, imo, it's exactly the opposite? like i'm sure my sister would think this was cheesy as all hell because she'd hear the smooth saxophone and immediately go "kenny g, barf"

ullr saves (gbx), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link

right yeah but otoh my dad likes it

challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, i guess that music nerd niche is a really broad one -- young ppl w/ hip taste but not like music nerds per se

challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

attn: there's some eno warm jets type shit going on in the instrumental right now

ullr saves (gbx), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure that a guy who did an album entirely using MIDI instrumentation is pretty comfortable intentionally exploring notions of cheesiness and corniness.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm listening to destroyer for the very first time right now. really nice, although dude's voice is the part i like the least. definitely makes me think indie steely dan...anyone know who's on sax?

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

this is sort of a cross-point w/ my post about gayngs on the countdown thread but i basically agree w/ gbx, im just trying to say that there are lots of people outside of music nerds who wouldnt think of this LP as being 'bad-cheesy'

challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:52 (thirteen years ago) link

n/a: yup, which is why i think m@tt was otm w/this:

In it’s own way, it’s as aggressive in its aesthetic as any noise record

the vaseline-on-lens sound (if that makes sense) seems almost purposefully uncool/challenging, at least superficially.

deej: totally agree with that, fwiw. i just think it's a little myopic to assume (not that yr doing this!) that this will have universal appeal. you kinda have to be willing to wade into the cheese. maybe not if yr an older dude/dad who has always loved this stuff, and not if yr a nerd who has investigated lots of different genres/eras, but i think for younger indie types everything about this record is just flat-out rong and whack.

ullr saves (gbx), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link

yah i mean i think it made sense for mark r to address it for pfork, but i thought it was a lil presumptive in the ny times

challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:03 (thirteen years ago) link

need gbx to liveblog the instrumental tbh

I, too, publicly endorse this record.

I sent a message in a bottle to the press.
It said: "don’t be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves."

wow...... hmmm.... crazy...... damn….. (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

she'd hear the smooth saxophone and immediately go "kenny g, barf"

hell that's pretty much my reaction to the sax and I like the record. and post regularly on balearic threads. I don't think it's a stretch to say parts of this code as cheesy. anyway I guess no one's arguing that anymore. :)

dmr, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

so how is the ambient piece? I'm kind of disappointed that Bay of Pigs won't be making it onto the vinyl

Dan S, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 23:39 (thirteen years ago) link

^ really? i think that's great news--i don't like Bay of Pigs.

nerve_pylon, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 23:47 (thirteen years ago) link

it's got that swiiiiiiiing

gr8080, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 23:50 (thirteen years ago) link

oh wait, Bay of Pigs is side 4 of the vinyl.

nerve_pylon, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 23:51 (thirteen years ago) link

interesting
discogs has it as "Bay of Pigs (Detail)".
the pitchfork review mentions that an ambient piece was substituted for BoP on the vinyl

Dan S, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 23:54 (thirteen years ago) link

oh great, i shelled out for the vinyl just for the side 4 vinyl only track which turns out to be Bay of Pigs...

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:23 (thirteen years ago) link

um

ullr saves (gbx), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:24 (thirteen years ago) link

isn't the instrumental piece vinyl-only, too?

ullr saves (gbx), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:24 (thirteen years ago) link

just listened to some clips... can't say I'm really drawn to it. as pastiche it seems a bit too straight/faithful to its sources and the one thing that sticks out as unusual/out of place is 9as noted by others) his voice. which is terrible.

ex-heroin addict tricycle (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago) link

This is not pastiche.

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link

yr right, pastiche implies disparate elements - this is more like an homage I guess

ex-heroin addict tricycle (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link

dunno if I'm gonna make it through all the songs tbh kinda wanna turn it off already and just listen to Katy Lied instead

ex-heroin addict tricycle (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Listen to "Downtown."

Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:35 (thirteen years ago) link

the sleeve is great, I'll give him that.

ex-heroin addict tricycle (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:37 (thirteen years ago) link

this doesnt sound close enough to 'katy lied' (or anything else really) to be 'pastiche' ... its using certain instruments & production styles but doesnt sound structurally like the stuff ppl are comparing it to, like, at all

challopian youtubes (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:40 (thirteen years ago) link

certainly way too freeform to be steely dan esque

challopian youtubes (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:40 (thirteen years ago) link

that's kinda what I don't like about it! Steely Dan had HOOKS and (at least up until Aja/Gaucho) some pretty weird/twisty song structures. this stuff just kinda floats along on two-chord changes and a lot of washed out textures - trying hard to be Babylon Sisters but lacking the chops

ex-heroin addict tricycle (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont know babylon sisters but uhhh being freeform is the point, its not 'about' hooks

challopian youtubes (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago) link

dude I am agreeing with you

ex-heroin addict tricycle (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago) link

re: Babylon Sisters - this is the opening track on Gaucho, the Dan's last album. it is noteworthy - sorta - for signalling a shift away from the complex structures and chordal interplay that were the band's usual stock in trade and toward a more free-form, groove-centered approach. even so, it has more changes/tonal shadings than this Destroyer stuff. even tho the underlying chord structure is simple, there are a whole bunch of melodies and weird harmonies and turnarounds in it. which don't really seem to be evident in Kaputt afaict.
