I mean if I'm going to demo this it's just so I can check out the sights, and I don't want people shooting me in the back of the head while I'm trying to do that.

JimD, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Was stoked to see this in action but no sessions have been available so far. This is why multiplayer only demos are stupid.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 08:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah same here. Apparently it's very buggy once you do get in.

JimD, Thursday, 27 January 2011 08:11 (thirteen years ago) link

plays like a really clunky Call of Duty as far as i can tell. unimpressed.

circa1916, Thursday, 27 January 2011 08:37 (thirteen years ago) link

wow this is just awful

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 28 January 2011 05:13 (thirteen years ago) link

went 2 rounds, backed out of lobby and deleted from my drive. if this is representative, this is a complete disaster.

one month passes...

anyone play the actual game? i'm not really in the mood for another shooter but the reviews are good.

adult music person (Jordan), Thursday, 24 March 2011 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I've made a start on it. Kind of relieved how similar it is to the original farcry/crysis - I was worried that they'd change it into a gung ho console shooter, but no, it's still basically Metal Gear FPS. Lots of sneaking and hiding, all looks amazing (it opens in a fucked up Battery Park and the views over the Hudson are beautiful).

JimD, Monday, 28 March 2011 17:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I still have to go back to Far Cry 2. It looked incredible but was just too damn hard for me.

Mordy, Monday, 28 March 2011 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

ditto

adult music person (Jordan), Monday, 28 March 2011 18:03 (thirteen years ago) link

This is hard too.

Haven't tried multi yet. Apparently the team that did the whole multiplayer side of it are the same people who used to be Free Radical! So my expectations are raised.

JimD, Monday, 28 March 2011 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Huh, something kind of stupid keeps happening in this game. I go into an open area full of bad guys, spend half an hour clearing them out one by one, make my way over the the checkpoint then get killed and thrown back to where I started (which is pretty argh). But then I can't be arsed killing everyone again, so I just stealth my way over to the exit area and, um, finish the whole chunk in 2 minutes instead of 30. Feels like I could probably speed run this whole game in about 20 minutes total if I just chose not to bother actually fighting anyone.

JimD, Friday, 1 April 2011 12:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Bewildered C2 garnered such praise in the press. Nothing special about it, assuming you've played a FPS in the last 5-10 years or so.

one month passes...

Finished this today. It seemed to get uglier and uglier the further in I got - more pop in, more jaggies. And then the final section is in a place that should give you some amazing views across the city, but they just fogged it all out. Maybe that doesn't happen on PC? But yeah, not such a gorgeous game really, beyond it's first couple of hours.

Game itself held my interest enough to get me to the end, but only just. Plot was nonsense, level design wasn't hugely inspired, but cloaking and sniping stayed consistently fun.

On tuesday, I think. all the journos seem to be keen on it. I liked FC2, and will probably be picking this up at some point.

this is the 3rd and final free game that came with my new video card. i didn't like fc2 all that much (so many awesome ideas with zzz execution) but i'm looking forward to this, hopefully it's not too super racist.

just finally got around to starting a playthrough of crysis 2 and wow i really really hate it so far

i dream of booze pinata (jjjusten), Thursday, 29 November 2012 18:24 (eleven years ago) link

i really wanted to like FC2 but got frustrated and stalled out on it. the save/checkpoint system (among other things) was really punishing, as i recall. excited about this one though.

i have a thing about playing fps games like borderlands, stalker, crysis etc with a keyboard and mouse - love the way you can aim all precise rather than letting the xbox controller pad give a helping hand. however my pc is a few years old so it might only run far cry 3 at low spec. with that in mind, is it the kind of game that benefits from the precise aim system you get from a mouse, or does that not really apply? ie i find games like portal, splinter cell, batman, max payne etc are fine to play with the controller pad

it's ok. story is fucking dumb on some last samurai shit.

adam, Thursday, 6 December 2012 23:08 (eleven years ago) link

yeah not looking forward to the story. mechanics are solid/fun though?

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Thursday, 6 December 2012 23:17 (eleven years ago) link

Bought a d/l code offa CL tonight. Still downloading.

The Giant Bomb guys raved about the mechanics and just dumped on the plot. So there's that.

i shot a shark dead from a clifftop, jumped into the water, skinned the shark, climbed out, threw a grenade into a pen of boars, skinned all of em, made me a backpack.

then a bunch of dudes showed up in a jeep but they got eaten by komodo dragons mid-gunfight. (i then skinned the komodo dragons.) gameplay is pretty good i'd say.

adam, Friday, 7 December 2012 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

You can hunt tigers with grenades in this, and their buddy will eat you.

Got my sharkshins by standing on a shore with an AK.

Vaas' voice-actor will become a much bigger star after this(at least in the V/A world)

don't starve is like far cry 3 but fun and not racist.

adam, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:51 (eleven years ago) link

girlfriend forbade me from killing any more animals in this, except snakes.

i like how all of the actual animal hunting quests justify it by making them rabid dogs or man-eating bears, but the rest of the time you're encouraged to shoot all of the animals because you want a new wallet.

Huh? All the hunting quest targets I've seen lately are suggested due to their exoticness: blood kimodo, black leopard, white belly tapir, etc.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

haha yeah go murder this endangered animal with a bow. then make a very fashionable grenade pouch. then do it again and again.

adam, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:16 (eleven years ago) link

I actually liked the crafting and hunting mechanic in this, but the targets got way too close to some poacher shit for this.

guess i'm not that far yet, i'm on the initial Animal Control levels and haven't graduated to poaching.

i want to play a good recent shooter. is this ok? or is it too douchey to deal w/

before and after broscience (goole), Thursday, 13 December 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

it's kinda douchey but the mechanics carry it through for me. doing things is fun, and the semi-random wanderings of animals and soldiers adds a lot. enough for me to overlook the dumb elements.

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Thursday, 13 December 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

huh ok, i'll keep it in mind. i did enjoy fc2 a lot.

cozen where are you with fps science these days

before and after broscience (goole), Thursday, 13 December 2012 21:13 (eleven years ago) link

wait r. shift to hold breath???????

adam, Thursday, 13 December 2012 21:28 (eleven years ago) link

Or right-stick to hold, yeah. Better accuracy.

To be fair, the only really douchey things are the characters, and they're written that way.

Got to the sex scene last night, which made sense in the story, I guess, and wasn't nearly as cringe-worthy as the speech the protagonist makes afterwards trying to rile up the troops.

Also, the 2ndary characters aren't used enough
