Wu-Tang is for the children

My effort so far has p much come down to 'stick a bunch of kung fu flicks on my lovefilm list, find out my copy of the how high soundtrack, order the tao of wu, read the wiki page on the 5% nation'. all of which were done in about 15 minutes.

i am going to try and do everything! with hidden darts and comps like that i haven't yet decided whether to do things on a basis of when they actually became public or when they got official releases? i am thinking obvious stuff on the time line (all that ghost&cappa post-9/11 stuff shouldn't wait until like 2007 comes to mind) and then leave the rest for official releases

I can kinda see a hoy hoy's point about NY post-the rise of gangsta rap. there really was a change in tone with the dawn of the Wu/Biggie/Jay-Z/Nas era

which is not to say that Showbiz or Kool G Rap or whoever didn't have angry tracks just that in general yeah I think things got a lot grimmer

yeah i think theres an element of truth to it for sure, i remember trying to write some piece about that at one pt a few years back & eventually giving up because i kept finding examples that would make things more & more complex

what inspired at the time was lord finesse's career & how he transitioned from the more lighthearted high-energy rap of his early career to pessimistic jams like 'skits' -- i think there's something to be said here too about the narratives in tracks like 'skits' or biggie's 'things done changed' where there is an idealized past that is destroyed by violence / loss of innocence etc .... parents used to take care of us / now they even fuckin scared of us etc.

related to this, then, is the change in tone between 90s gangster rap & 00s, where you go from kids who remember life before crack hits (or at the v. least, their older siblings do) to kids who are the actual crack baby generation & how the mentality changes from that

sounds like a piece that oughtta get written, contradictions and complexities aside

Starting to feel like I could write a book on Protect Ya Neck alone. When the hell is that 33 1/3 ETWT book coming out? 100 odd pages doesn't seem enough - i may take all of February to do the debut at this rate.*

*I won't, I need to find a new job and move, my 15 minutes a day blogging is about as much as I can spare.

By the way I have decided I am going to do Monday-to-Monday on Enter the Wu Tang but only have six pieces in mind (Production, Sound effects and radio rips, References, 2 days of breaking down each song and where it all lead i.e. individual deals and the 5 year plan, wu-gambinos&liquid swords&horrorcore side and other breakdowns that came after etc.) - if anyone would like to chip in with something they'd like to write or would like me to write about? I'd ask Whiney or one of you awesome paid critics but you know this is a tumblr with 10 followers so if just any other ilxor been stung by a killa-bee?
