Spent way too long last night basking in the righteous nerd rage over these people. I am generally unaware of them, but they do in fact seem pretty horrible.

I myself am fighting a losing battle with my own smugness, mostly due to my calculated unawareness of such things. I am ambivalent about this- I have a hard time construing ignorance as being a good thing- but man, TV made me so angry, all the time. If I had watched any of their ads, I too would be filled with the Urge to Kill. I don't want to start going around evangelizing about how everybody can reach my level of stupefied self-satisfaction, and I really do believe that people should interface with the world around them, but the media, it's not the world around us. It's an echo chamber.

The same goes for Youtube, although I love Youtube and I use it a lot. Mostly I poke around the corners, though. People who watch these viral, memetic, whatever videos... as much as I want to be in the "mainstream", I think Youtube's idea of "popular music" is like Doctor Demento, but about a billion times worse than "Star Trekkin'". In the meantime the good Doctor himself languishes in obscurity. I'd be upset about that, but like I said before, I'm way too smug. While traditional media has allowed the lowest common denominator to sink, apparently, appalingly low as people flee it like rats leaving a sinking ship, on the Internet there isn't even one of those. A meme is not a thought-virus; there's no thought attached, no idea, just cute pictures of cats. Frankly I find this superior to television, because non-thoughts lack the ability to corrupt and destroy.

So why is this being used to advertise cars? Honestly the whole car ad gestalt is something I never understood anyway. I have never met a person who will admit that their choice of automobile is dictated wholly or even in large part by television ads. I know a lot of middle-class people, even upper-middle-class people, but I don't know anyone who has the disposable income to live that kind of life. But a lot of money goes into car ads, so it must do something for someone. Again this implies a whole world of people I am completely ignorant of, a whole world of truly and profoundly wrong people, and it scares me a little.

If anything good can come out of this, it will hopefully be that these two will be the fulcrum on which the notion of "hipsterism" (I go to CHURCH with people hipper than these guys) is finally laid to rest once and for all. Oh, and maybe we as a society will reach a point where saying "Oh, I don't watch TV" will not automatically label you as a complete jerkface.

anyway, I just thought it was really cool when I saw them this morning because it was totally unexpected. there I was, just minding my own business, and BAM! Pomplamoose walk in front of me. I'm not trying to make this a religious thread at all (I'm sort of a de-converted christian, I only went to church today because my buddy was going. the fact that it was at church has nothing to do with my post except to give context). I just wanted to brag a little bit that I kicked it with Pomplamoose today and see if anyone else is into them.
