Weird old ILM thread.

You got that right, Mark. I like Alex's tentativeness, his polite way of carefully hedging his disdain ("Perhaps I should be more patient...") -- so quaint!

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Sunday, 9 May 2004 15:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Keep in mind I think that was only five, six days after he first joined the board!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 May 2004 15:57 (nineteen years ago) link

I like 'em.

I like Alex's tentativeness, his polite way of carefully hedging his disdain ("Perhaps I should be more patient...") -- so quaint!

I still post like that!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Heh, so do I, Skillz, but it's certainly a far cry from nu-Alex in NYC!

Tim, what does it for you with Rock Action? I think it's a fantastic record, but it doesn't give me the glazed eyes quite like Young Team or parts of Ten Rapid. It's more consistent, maybe, but less intense. The slower, prettier tracks on Rock Action have a deliberateness, a literalness about them, whereas early "ballads" like "Tracy" or "Helicon 2" are gauzier, dreamier, more enveloping. That's just me.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Monday, 10 May 2004 00:57 (nineteen years ago) link

No, old-Alex in NYC was like that too, I think he was just trying to be respectful to Mogwai because they weren't in the pabulum category.

I'll answer your question a bit later Clarke when I've thought about it more.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 10 May 2004 03:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll be interested in Tim's answer, but to chime in roughly (I would listen to the album right now but I'm hearing a pretty good Labradford set here so anyway): I see Clarke's distinction readily, that sense of tripping out in the earlier stuff in terms of envelopment. But I think I'd also rank Rock Action at their best, in that there's some near undefinable sense of...I'm looking for the word, I hesitate to say 'epic melancholy,' though I'm willing to bet there's a good German word for it. I think the album's focus is its strength, I recall the band almost joking a bit about how Rock Action would be their radically different 'short song' album, but in respects by arranging it that way everything became more tightly wound, amplified, brought into sharper focus. It's also a sense where all the individual elements *work* so effectively, how everything adds to the mix and seems to emerge and cut out right when needed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 04:24 (nineteen years ago) link

i think all of the Mogwai LPs are faulty, i really think they hit their strides in the EP format. nearly every one of their EPs is much more aimed for repeat listenings then the inferior full-lengths.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 04:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Young Team, for the sake of example, is filled with a bunch of crap that's just fast-forward fodder strung between "Tracy", "Mogwai Fear Satan", "A Cheery Wave From Stranded Youngsters" etc.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 04:52 (nineteen years ago) link

you don't mean weltschmerz, do you, ned? it would be too strong a word to apply to mogwai.

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 10 May 2004 05:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Aside from the EP vs. LP camp, am I right in assuming that fans are generally divided into Young Team-or-bust and CODY+Rock Action? i.e. are there people who like all three (I'm unwilling to accept that it was Mogwai who recorded Happy Songs) of their albums?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 10 May 2004 05:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Good to know that I'm not the only one who likes Rock Action best.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 May 2004 05:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Also gygax! otm about how the albums all have flaws (except Rock Action!(which, if it actually has problems, at least their brevity masks 'em)).

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 10 May 2004 05:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Young Team is maybe five really really good tracks and a bunch of totally ignorable filler. The next album was totally ignorable filler and immediately after that I stopped caring.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 May 2004 05:24 (nineteen years ago) link

If "weltschmerz" means what I think it does (literally = world pain, but more poetically = world weary, with a hint of pathos) then I think the term is appropriate for "Rock Action".

Gygax's comments re: Young Team are completely otm. I've never understood the fawning over that record. Yes, there are intense moments on YT that can't be found on any of their other albums, but there's a load of filler too. Once I discovered live Mogwai bootlegs I discovered I didn't need YT to get my Mogwai Fear Satan fix anymore.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 May 2004 05:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Happy Songs is my favourite, which fucks your theory, Leeefuse! I thought Rock Action could have been magnificent when I first got it, but its appeal didn't hold for me. I'd have to go back and listen to everything again to see why.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 05:55 (nineteen years ago) link

one of the most boring bands i have ever seen live.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 10 May 2004 05:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Rock Action is the best purely for the six odd minutes of 2 Rights = 1 Wrong, especially for the comedown bit with the three-note banjo line and glitchy noises in the last couple of minutes.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 10 May 2004 08:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Ned actually nailed my answer - I guess "epic melancholy" just does it for me more than the trippy stuff. But I do have a longer answer in the works.

I never listen to CODY, incidentally. Love the EP in between CODY and Rock ActioN though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 10 May 2004 11:13 (nineteen years ago) link

i.e. are there people who like all three (I'm unwilling to accept that it was Mogwai who recorded Happy Songs) of their albums

That would be me! And the new one too, though I don't listen to it anywhere as much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 11:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't remember the last time i was more underwhelmed by an album than I was by Rock Action. It was like listening to an unfinished sketch of an idea of an album. Like rehearsal tapes that were recorded really well. So, it is a memorable album in that sense. But I haven't listened to it since I bought it years ago. I'll listen again and see if I've changed my mind any. Stranger things have happened!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 10 May 2004 12:16 (nineteen years ago) link

And I generally have nothing against that kinda stuff of course. Even stuff with a lack of ideas/creativity. Cool guitar noise on its own is usually enough for me. I still listen to listless Bowery Electric and Magnog albums.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 10 May 2004 12:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Now see, I was in fact listening to Magnog last week...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I think fuck the curfew is their strongest release, but after that, I'd take Happy Songs and Rock Action over the other two albums easily. The songs on each are more distinct.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:23 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm frequently in the mood of listening to mogwai-type music, but there are several acts who do it a lot better than mogwai, which is why i don't listen to them much. i used to play the first four tracks on CODY quite a bit: i enjoyed cooking and eating pasta to them, if i recall correctly. that "stanley kubrick" song was good too, as was "summer" off the first record. i think "happy songs..." was their most complete and best record, but it still only provoked a "this is nice, but i think i will listen to low instead" from me.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 10 May 2004 13:28 (nineteen years ago) link

No, old-Alex in NYC was like that too, I think he was just trying to be respectful to Mogwai because they weren't in the pabulum category.

Reasonably accurate. After reading a number of interviews with the band, they sounded like a band I would like -- brimming with a healthy disdain for pretty much everything else. Likewise, the influences they'd continually cite -- Stooges, Sabbath, etc. -- all suggested that their music would be right up my alley. Hate to say, however, but I just found their music to be staggeringly dull. Still do

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 May 2004 14:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd take Happy Songs and Rock Action over the other two albums easily. The songs on each are more distinct.

Mogwai seem to be everything to everyone, because with the exception of "Ratts in the Capital," Happy Songs absolutely melts into a single blob of tepidness.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 10 May 2004 17:12 (nineteen years ago) link

This thread has inspired me to put selected tracks onto the iPod.

CODY blurs into one big homogenous blob for me.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:08 (nineteen years ago) link

i listened to young team there a few weeks ago,i'd been up all night and was sitting down by the sea having a joint before bed,and it was a beautiful morning, which may have contributed to my reaction, but i really enjoyed it at the time...
i used to love mogwai, listened to them all the time, but i hadn't really thought that much about them in a while...

tracy is one of the most beautiful tracks imaginable, and mogwai fear satan is incredible, really immense sounding without being ridiculous...
loads of the eps and other stuff were really good as well, and cody had its moments, but i never loved it as much as the others, although the run of three tracks towards the end was excellent...

they were great all the times i saw them live as well

i haven't really kept up with them though,i heard and quite liked rock action but never really bothered to get it,and i haven't heard anything since (unless that jewish hymn thing came out since then, which i really liked...)

this thread has made me really want to dig out some of their stuff,i must have a look....

robin (robin), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:15 (nineteen years ago) link

the kid loco remix of "tracy" is really really great too.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:15 (nineteen years ago) link

agreed
also, the surgeon remix of mogwai fear satan is incredible

thinking about it,its weird, cause i haven't payed attention to much of that sort of music in ages, even though i used to love it,and in a way it was mogwai who got me out of it,since i heard of surgeon through them and subsequently got into techno...

robin (robin), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:20 (nineteen years ago) link

also, what do people think of helicon one?
the various live versions are absolutely stunning...

(i can't find any of my mogwai cds,its wrecking my head)

robin (robin), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Young Team sounds, largely, to me like kids playing at postrock, like avant-garde for Nirvana fans (i.e. not very avant-garde at all); they can't quite pull it off. There are maybe four tracks I really like ("Long Way From Home", "Without Portfolio", "Tracy", "Fear Satan"). Likewise CODY, only poorer. I remember my mates at the time loved it, but I just thought it was boring, "Xmas Steps" excluded. The [Stanley Kubrick] EP had a much greater level of control, it was like they were trying to show Godspeed how it's done properly, but it's since Rock Action that I think they've been really good, so many more ideas and a much nicer sound altogther. But, you know, they added keys and trumpets - I'm bound to love it. Happy Songs is like the second part of Rock Action rather than a record in its own right.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Best thing they ever did: "Punk Rock"!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 10 May 2004 22:47 (nineteen years ago) link

also, what do people think of helicon one?
the various live versions are absolutely stunning...

The version on "Ten Rapid" doesn't come close to the greatness of any live version, or the "New Paths To Helicon" re-recording a couple of years later. A continuous loop of live versions of "Mogwai Fear Satan" and "Helicon 1" would keep me happy and entertained 24/7.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 02:51 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm still inclined to think that they've done nothing worth hearing since early 1998. that said, in 1997 they were one of the best live bands in the world, and pretty good on record too. i find their subsequent career very sad.

Hmm. Had a couple of long drives with work and Happy Songs was one of the CDs I took with me (primarily because of reading this thread the other day, and also because given it all sounded pretty good at ATP I thought I might have been uncharitable to it when it came out).

On the way up, only Hunted By A Freak and Ratts Of The Capital grabbed me at all. On the way back just now I thought I'd give it another try - Ratts Of The Capital didn't sound as good as it did yesterday. Hmm.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 14:41 (nineteen years ago) link

gigography link to that Irving Plaza show with a comment about the Don't Do It as well

Heh, it's the first thing anyone would mention who was at that show.
I was talking to a friend I didn't know until years later and it transpired that we were both in attendance... And immediately like, we just looked at each other grinning and shouted out "DON'T DO IT!!" in unison.

i was disappointed too that they only played 4 songs

Well tbf, all 4 of them were 10 minutes long.

I probably saw more shows in September 1999 than any other month which is kinda crazy b/c I was 15 years old at the time. I think the Mogwai/Ganger and Godspeed/Labradford shows were a few days before school started, but the Matador 10th show was on like a Monday or Tuesday night and I had a history test the next day. Relatedly, this was right around the time I started failing out of school.

Very nice message just sent out via their Bandcamp:

It is 25 years this week since the release of our first single Tuner/Lower, the first release on Rock Action Records. We started the label (named after Stooges drummer Scott Asheton) with a loan of £400 from my sister Victoria’s boyfriend (now husband) Jared. Martin’s folks generously helped us out by paying for the studio to record the songs. We folded the record sleeves up one by one in my bedroom at my parents house. I had every expectation that most of them were going to be hard to get rid of and would remain in a pile in my bedroom for some time. Thankfully that wasn’t to be the case.

We didn’t start the band or the label to get in to charts. That would have seemed insane. We were just kids that wanted to make an amazing noise and get our record played on John Peel. Amazingly John did play the record, and one thing led to another to get us to the point we’re at now. Its been an incredible journey making music together over the last quarter century, taking us to places we never dreamed of and getting to play our music to more people than we ever imagined. None of us ever envisaged either the band or the label being in a position where having a number one record would be a possibility.

As it stands our new album As The Love Continues is number one in the UK charts. It's something we’re amazed by. We’re taken aback by everyone’s support, kindness and generosity. It means so much to us and would be incredible if we could hold on to remain number one when the chart comes out on Friday. For that to happen we need everyone’s help by buying the record and streaming it as much as possible. We are so grateful for all the support we’ve received so far and with just a few more days of it we can do something pretty amazing.

If you've bought the album via Bandcamp but haven't yet downloaded, the UK charts will only register the sale once it's downloaded so if you can...it'd be appreciated.

Cheers!
Stuart

Precisely the inverse of the Sept 99 gigs lol. "Polite where it should have howled" describes that GYBE set perfectly.

three years pass...

About 2/3rds of the way through Stuart's book right now, it's.. fine, as far as these type of fucks go. Nothing really revelatory, but I actually found his early show going career list more endearing and relatable than Thurston's (for a recent comparison).

Seems like he mostly regrets coming off like such an abrasive knob in early interviews, basically it sounds like the more he mouthed off the more print they got and he was happy to feed it if it meant more coverage for the band, even if he felt conflicted about it. He also seems to regret the Blur shirt thing, not that he doesn't think Blue are shite, but rather that he thinks the timing of the shirts shot themselves in the foot a little in the long run.
