The Hawtin album gets my vote too. Unique release back then. Sabres & 93-94 Aphex close behind.

I also really love Richard Kirk's Virtual State. I was a huge Cabs fan and liked Sweet Exorcist but was more into what Virtual State had to offer at the time. It's a really beautiful and amazing sounding album.

dan selzer, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i love that record too.

jed_, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

yup, i missed that one. sweet exorcist is a sentimental fave. obv the singles are way better than the albums.

tricky, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link

i was wondering if anyone was going to rep for coco steel.

the first chris clark album is really underrated i think. at least no one ever talks about it. it's very neo aphex twin from a few years earlier, but it's easily just as good just not in the muso way.

tricky, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:51 (sixteen years ago) link

we talked about it alot on ilm when it came out

chaki, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:55 (sixteen years ago) link

chris clark is underrated in general. he came too late. his last EP is amazing.

not sure about best...but Geogaddi is my overall favorite

stephen, Friday, 4 May 2007 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

my second choice would be Work and Non Work...love that collection

stephen, Friday, 4 May 2007 21:33 (sixteen years ago) link

A lot of great stuff but Intervision is one of my top 5 favourite records ever.

admrl, Friday, 4 May 2007 21:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I'm going to vote for Tri Repetae, but I really mean Tri Repetae++.
Actually, I think I'll go for Clark's Body Riddle, which needs more love than it gets.

Z S, Friday, 4 May 2007 22:33 (sixteen years ago) link

LFO Advance for me. Was a tough one but that's what I went for in the end. I still remember the excitement when that album came out. Good memories.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 4 May 2007 22:44 (sixteen years ago) link

a couple of tracks on that are up there with the best electronic tracks ever ("tied up"!!) but some of them are sort of snoozy ... same feelings about "sheath" and "frequencies", honestly.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 4 May 2007 22:55 (sixteen years ago) link

i voted for lp5

tricky, Friday, 4 May 2007 23:19 (sixteen years ago) link

The first Nightmare on Wax is a terrific album, so warm, original and funky and with none of the lazy soul stoner affectations of the later stuff. I have a lot of the other albums from the early years, and they're patchy. Even in those days, Warp was overrated. They rejected Aphex's early material and only signed him later when R&S had put out SAW. LFO put out some great vinyl then seemed to lose it on the first album. Fuse only had one or two tracks, the rest of that record is pretty corny. Honourable mention to Sweet Exorcist, for their early bizarre and creative direction.

I say BOC _"Music Has The Right..." for me, though I love all their stuff. And Richard H. Kirk's stuff, too. And the "Classics:Influences " 2 CD. How was that RHK early recordings compilation Mute put out a few years back? Anyone?

braveclub, Saturday, 5 May 2007 08:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Despite being a twat last night, I are still WARP 4 LIFE, mufferfukkaz.

Todayz 5:

1. Aphex Twin - SAW II
2. Autechre - LP5
3. Prefuse 73 - Vocal Studies
4. Aphex Again - RDJ Ablum
5. 2 Lone Swordsmen - Tiny Reminders

List subject to change during next 10 minutes.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 5 May 2007 10:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I could've voted for A Word Of Science or Blech, but I picked Stay Down by Two Lone Swordsmen. Where's the love for that record? I love it how it's both trippy and melancholy, like Mouse on Mars on depressants. Though the EP that preceded it (A Bag of Blue Sparks) is maybe even better.

Tuomas, Saturday, 5 May 2007 11:10 (sixteen years ago) link

this blech was better than the CD release (although both are great)

Speaking of Blech, who the hell was DJ Mink? I don't think I've ever heard anything by him except "Hey Hey Can You Relate", which is great.

Maximo Park are on Warp? Weird.

blueski, Saturday, 5 May 2007 14:11 (sixteen years ago) link

i didnt realize people were hating on frequencies. wow. so LFO jumped the shark before the first album?

i am going with haunted dancehall just because i love the vibe created there

artdamages, Saturday, 5 May 2007 14:49 (sixteen years ago) link

looking at the catalogue their post millenial releases are embarrassing for all involved.

LP5 over Tri Repetae or Chiastic Slide?

Bill in Chicago, Saturday, 26 May 2007 15:00 (sixteen years ago) link

^^^ absolutely! is the best autechre record (always prefered cichli suite to chiastic slide as well)

I'm strangely partial to that, and also to Incunabula

...so music and chicken have become intertwined (Turrican), Friday, 14 April 2017 17:18 (seven years ago) link

I like the "Butterfly Prowler" track on the new Clark album. His tracks can get a bit cluttered/muddled.. there's a lot going on in some of them, but it can be sort of impenetrable or too compressed-sounding.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 14 April 2017 19:27 (seven years ago) link

https://www.thelineofbestfit.com/features/track-by-track/track-by-track-clark-on-death-peak

He's did this track-by-track description, it's worth a gander

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 14 April 2017 19:33 (seven years ago) link

That's a good description of his tracks ^ Some of them really hit the sweet spot for me, the closest he's come to a fully realized success is "Clark" I think.

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Friday, 14 April 2017 19:49 (seven years ago) link

good description in reference to your post braunld

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Friday, 14 April 2017 19:50 (seven years ago) link

The s/t is pretty solid throughout, been meaning to purchase it but something else always comes up. I read an interview where he talks about the book Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, and how the album (s/t) is sort of based on/related to it.. anyway, made me pick up the book and it was good, easy/engaging sci fi. Haven't yet delved further into the trilogy, though.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:15 (seven years ago) link

Oh nice, i'll have to check that book out. Reading the article that explains his recording process was really interesting. His enthusiasm for explaining the visceral sounds he achieves is v cool. Not sure it always translates to the most enjoyable experience but ymmv

the early-mid 00s stuff (Draft + Untilted) is possibly my favorite of theirs. The AE_LIVE material is underrated as well

DL - Have you heard the second Plone album, it's a really evolved sound, almost reminds me more of pre-Mum at times.

Heard new Clark album this weekend and "Butterfly Prowler" and "Peak Magnetic" are the stand out tracks. His formula seems a bit predictable in that he has way too many ideas lobbed on top of some tracks that are also trying to make you move. Doesn't quite work for me.
