I like the idea of a little ILX wizard assistant thingy. Of course it would look like Ned.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I always find that just going to Google and searching for "band x" + "ilm" works about as good as using the search (obviously some things aren't indexed or whatever) and a good deal quicker(I always find the search on here quite slow).

jimnaseum doof-doof, Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:44 (seventeen years ago) link

The Search page does have a "search using Google" option. That's what I always use, since it's a lot faster than the ILX search function. (And it's less likely to "poxy fule" the boards)

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm going to see them tonight, touch wood. Although this "sold out" business sounds ominous.

Action Tim Vision (noodle vague), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I probably won't do this on ILM again, but if you are sufficiently dedicated I'm putting them on in Cardiff next Monday, with Volcano!, I'm Being Good, Truckers of Husk and DJ Scotch Egg. It isn't sold out. Yet.

the thing that's distracting about this band is that the drummer/singer is constantly readjusting his facemask.

completely blows it for me.

also, what does OTM mean

volcano! were great. Lightning Bolt were grrrrrrrrrrreat. I have headbanger's neck.

Hi fandango! Hope you enjoyed it too. I got talking to some mates I haven't seen for ages; will give you a shout some time if you fancy some beers.

The videos on their site are pretty funny. Looks mad, looking forward to it, keep you posted.

The Google bar jobbie works for me.

This is why I sometimes question the no new thread shoutdowns, we've bounced along nicely here tippy toeing across a couple of useful topics and brought all manner of happiness and knowledge to all.

Keep tapping them keys.

wow. that might just have been the best gig i've ever seen them play! i think i'm getting too old for this shit, though. certainly too old to see them 4 times in the next week, despite having the tickets to do so...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I got in tonight! I was on the train home from work reading the Metro and it said they were playing tonight with the Magik Markers so I thought I might as well see if I can get in, they had 20 tickets left on the door! I love last minute gigs. Helps if you live on a direct bus route from the Garage though.

The Magik Markers played about 40 minutes of almost constant noise, no pauses whatsoever. Then just "Thanks, we're the Magik Markers, Lightning Bolt is next". That 40 minutes seemed to be half the time though.

Lightning Bolt were fucking amazing. First time I've seen them, I have to say they weren't _quite_ as loud as I thought they might be, although of course they were fucking loud. Not Dinosaur Jr/MBV/Motorhead loud though. The drummer moved his whole drum kit out into the middle of the audience towards the end of their set! The noise that they get out of a bass guitar is incredible.

Woo! Now I'm all hyper and it's midnight and I have to go to stupid work tomorrow. Bugger.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 18 May 2006 22:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Heh! That was good.

"UP AGAINST THE WALL!" He's a bossy bastard isn't he? Lost a good half stone there in sweat. I loved the dragging of drum kit into the audience. He's amazing to watch, staring right into peoples faces whilst pummeling the kit, I guess that's where the energy comes from.

My only complaint is people standing next to you stock still in a mosh pit trying to get pictures on their stupid phones.

YOU DO NOT STAND STILL IN A MOSH PIT!

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 22:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah the picture taking was annoying. I couldn't get close enough to actually see them!

I did =)

I was speaking more of... every other gig!

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 18 May 2006 23:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah the picture taking was annoying. I couldn't get close enough to actually see them!

i managed to be in the front row, but only because i stood there for an hour and a half waiting. they're the only band i've ever been prepared to do that with (mind you, i think they're the only band who you can't see if you're not in the front few rows).

toby (tsg20), Friday, 19 May 2006 06:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Every time I think "I'm too old for this shit" and then I end up crushed down the front cos of the irresistable power of MOOSICk. Wednesday night 's audience was dead polite though, I've seen much worse behaviour at much wussier gigs.

Action Tim Vision (noodle vague), Friday, 19 May 2006 07:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Didn't you just spend all your time holding the line? Cue the helicopters.

A youngster who was attempting edge himself in front of me along with side glances to ensure I wasn't about to thump him one, but to whom I returned the physical nudging with just the correct amount of dominant pressure in return, finally just turned to me and asked very politely if it was okay if he stood in front of me? I couldn't resist his charm and naviety and gave into him completely with "Yeah, no problem."

I agree this wus a pussy pit compared to some.

My left ear is ringing.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 19 May 2006 10:20 (seventeen years ago) link

my left ear was ringing a little last night, and I was wearing decent earplugs.

turns out they're playing four times at atp...

toby (tsg20), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:33 (seventeen years ago) link

The picture taking is a bit arse, but it's rare that you can get such good pictures as you can at the Bolt, what with the closeness. I wish I was at chuffing ATP rather than 'revising'. Bah.

four months pass...
What is lightning? Where does it come from? What does it mean? Does it have a meaning? Where does it come from? What is it made of? Is it made of light? Some might say it was made of light. Others contend that lightning is made of fire. People used to think that lightning was made of fire. Fire in the sky. Fire that killed people and knocked down trees. Before Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin Franklin was a founding father. He fatherly founded that lightning is made of electricity. Electricity in the sky.

But what of the Greek myths, of the Greek god Zeus and of the popular image of Zeus - a Greek God - throwing down lightning bolts to kill people and knock down trees. Where did he find the time? And what of lightning being made of fire? In this workaday world in the era of the founding father Benjamin Franklin we have no time nor patience for such concerns. These are for the third world and schizophrenics.

Some people do not understand that lightning is destructive. They ignore the wisdom of their elders and of the founding father Benjamin Franklin. They think lightning is a lie perpetrated by people with a vested interest. At their own peril!!! Lightning kills people and knocks down trees!!! It a power of destruction exercised by the Greek god Zeus, the mightiest of Greek gods!! But they do it: they ignore such wisdom and taunt the powerful exercise of destruction and they worship their idle gods and stand near trees. At their own peril!! Lightning has the killing power to kill people and the destructive power to knock down trees! When you stand near trees, they will be knocked down by lightning and you will be killed by lightning! There is no escape. Lightning will knock down the tree and knock down your soul. Trees are tall.

Many things are tall. Many things attract lightning. But do the two correlate? A recent study says yes. It says that being tall and attracting lightning do correlate. That means that being tall corellates with being struck by lightning. You die when you are struck by lightning, and your tree is knocked down.

Some people try to measure lightning, they take measurements of it. They use balloons and rockets and their imagination and determination and research money and they put it all in the mixing bowl and they mix in storms - storms with lightning - and so they mix in the lightning and then they get the product if they're lucky of measurements about lightning from the storm? What kind of measurements? We may never know...

Lightning!!!

solo album from Brian Gibson! http://thrilljockey.com/products/thumper-thrill-435

Brian Gibson, bassist for the ballistic duo Lightning Bolt, makes his solo debut on Thumper, approaching the rhythmic violence his music is known for with a propensity for tense, electronic thrusts, pulsing synth swells, and symphonic bursts. Drawing from music originally created for the hit video game of the same name that Gibson created the art and music for, the album takes the listener on a trek through trans-dimensional journey where the brutality of the music’s momentum is equally entrancing. Despite the presence of lush, even soothing tones, the tensions that blossom from each track overwhelm the senses to invigorating effect.
