Baldur wins! (Although we're not competing...)

Sunday morning, coming down, I would like to strike my drunken dream, winner or no. Oh well.

Baldur, Sunday, 9 January 2005 16:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I had a dream it was Thanksgiving, but just as the food was going out on the table, this band that I suddenly had been wanting to hear was going on, a salsa band. But they looked and kind of sounded like an indie rock band. I only caught a few seconds, when I realized I should go put on a leather-soled shoes, and I never managed to get back to the band or the dinner table. It was all more complicated than that, in dream style.

The show was somehow at my house, or something like that. I just need to go upstairs to get my shoes on.

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Monday, 10 January 2005 12:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Much of the dream was spent thinking about what my mom was going to think about me just not showing up at the dinner table.

Right before I passed out last night, I tried to sign on to ILM, but it was down. So I dreamt that Dizzee Rascal had committed suicide, and that ILM was down because it had been flooded with so many posts about it. When I finally got on the site, there was a thread called "dizzee rascal R.I.P." that had 1914 responses. A lot of people were already canonizing him and comparing him to Ian Curtis, so I made my girlfriend go on amazon and buy new copies of both of his albums because I figured that they would be collector's items (for some reason). I even dreamt that I woke up from that dream and checked the internet to find out if it was true and found the headline "Rapper Rascal Found Dead in Home" on Yahoo! News... So when I finally did wake up, I asked my girlfriend if she had heard that Dizzee Rascal had killed himself, and she said, "...What?" Anyway. Just thought that was kinda funny.

Last night I dreamed that everyone at my work was posting onto ILM. There were all these long tables set up with computers, and everyone was just posting away. Except it was weird, it was like the people you were posting to were sitting across the table, and were actually verbally replying to everything you posted. Or something like that. I was posting a reply about...I think Jane's Addiction, and how they sucked when I saw them for their first reunion show last year at the Warfield...and Dave Navarro was sitting right across from me telling me why they didn't suck and I was arguing with him. It was a very cool dream.

Last night I dreamt that I checked ILM and there was a thread called, "C/D: Darnielle's Autobiography" and I picked up the copy I had on my bookshelf. The design was minimal with a white hardback with green text. It was called, "Goat" and had a photograph of a Pan (half man, half goat) on the cover striking a very regal posture. I didn't read it, but I also found two other books on my shelf that were volumes one and two of a comprehensive guide to Mountain Goats songs with lyrics and analysis.

This is what I get for checking ILM right before I go to sleep...

I once dreamt that I had to fill in for Charlie Watts, who was too sick to drum.
I just remember sitting behind the kit thinking "Don't hit the hi-hat on the 2 and 4. DON'T HIT HIT THE HI-HAT ON THE 2 AND 4!!!"

And I'm not even a Stones fan.

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 18 March 2005 20:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I once had a dream that Jonny Greenwood walked past my house, and I was like "OMG IT'S JONNY GREENWOOD!" and then he turned around and winked at me and gave me a thumbs up, and then continued walking.

How utterly mundane is that?

Oh, I also had a dream that I was hearing Medulla before it came out... it was so awesome.

For a couple of years in high school, my favorite band was Oingo Boingo. In my junior year, my family moved to Indonesia, where it was difficult to find any American releases other than the most popular stuff - ie., not Oingo Boingo. Anyway, soon after we moved, I had a very vivid dream in which I went to a record store - I think it must have been somewhere in the US - I still have a vague mental image of it - and I was looking through the music racks, and I found the new release by Oingo Boingo (this was entirely the product of my dream imagination, at the time Oingo Boingo did not have any new release coming out that I knew about). In my dream I listened to the new album and was really digging it. Even after I woke up I could sort of remember what the songs had sounded like, although I have by now forgotten.

I guess the dream is interesting to me, because somehow my dream brain actually must have created these songs. There have been other instances of musicians hearing a piece of music in their dreams and later writing it down. Dave Douglas has a tune that he wrote in that way. In his dream, the tune was played by Bill Frisell, although once he woke up he realized that it wasn't any tune that Frisell had ever written, so he wrote it down and called it the "Frisell Dream" I think.

i had two dreams last night, both about music.

in one I was going sledding/luging with Low. i say luging because they were these sort of tube/tunnels/tracks in the snow, but i dont think we were actually in a luge. it was fun, but i kept falling off.

in the other i was having some sort of conversation with alasdair of the clientele. he wasnt being very nice, really condescending actually, but i cant remember any more than that.

dreamed i was performing alone on a stage with an acoustic guitar beside a mason jar that was meant to be a tip jar but was filled with what i knew to be magic beans. and morrisey made an appearance. i wrote it down somewhere.

One or two years ago I had a dream about the reasons of the disappearing of Fischerspooner. I don't remember exactly, but they were in a submarine and killed some people, and made some sausages of the body of their victims.

Oh, and once I had a dream that Mike Skinner is a Hungarian man in truth, and his real name is Csaba Sarkantyú, with all this Brummie accent and British working class bullshit is just a PR trick.

I have entered a record store which is located in my old high school. (Strangely, this is the second time I've dreamed of a record store in my high school). I'm talking to the proprietor of the store.

"Hey, have you heard this band called There?" he asks.
"No, what the fuck man, that's the third time today someone has mentioned them to me out of nowhere. I've never heard of them before today." Earlier in the dream, two different people have asked me the same question. I ask him to play the record for me. When he takes it out, I glance at the sleeve, which is mostly white with a blurry photo of the four band members near the bottom. Across the top: "T H E R E"

"Are you sure it's not 'The Re'?"
"Nah, it's just There."

I have a preconceived notion that the band is a ripoff of The Bravery (hah) (I have never heard The Bravery). When he plays the record, I hear the chorus of "Hey Now Now" by The Cloud Room.

Not exactly about music, but I was fighting the need to get up to use the bathroom and momentarily drifting back to sleep, when the sentence "Ahmed is my drummer" went through my head. I guess I was saying it but I was also too close to being awake to be fully identified with it.

I dreamt that I was in an unfamiliar record store that was having a big sale. I was flipping through CDs hoping to find Durutti Column's "Someone Else's Party." Instead I came across cassettes of The Godfathers' "Hit By Hit" and "Birth School Work Death" in cardboard longboxes. They were the same height as the original CD longboxes, but the width of the short side of a cassette, and I could hear the tapes rattling around inside.

I dreamed the Jonathan Fire*Eater singer was recognized in public by a drunk tourist – she called him “Jonathan Flex*Account,” and he got really pissed off. (Note: I haven’t thought of this band in decades.)

I had a dream last night I had to help the Grateful Dead circa the mid-80s get set up for a gig in a community center and they were all set up in different rooms backstage "rehearsing" and it was a real pain in the ass to move all the gear to the stage and I kept wondering why they didn't have a big road crew and also I hate the Dead so it was more of a nightmare.

I had some strange dream last night where I was hanging out with someone I know looking at their record collection and they had this big poster for some Canadian rock festival at Exhibition Stadium called HOSERFEST '84 which had Bob and Doug McKenzie as the hosts and had BTO headlining Friday, Rush on Saturday and Gordon Lightfoot on Sunday. There was other acts I remember seeing on the poster like Max Webster.

I endured an interesting variation of my usual anxiety dream (university exam, haven't studied) last night. I had somehow been recruited to stand in for Richard Lloyd at a Television gig. The problem was that in the dream, as in life, there are only three of their songs that I can play end to end. So as soon as the set list moved beyond side one of Marquee Moon, I would be exposed to ridicule and opprobrium. Verlaine and Billy Ficca were staring expectantly at me, I turned to pick up Lloyd's Telecaster... and then my alarm clock rang. Thank fuck.

Dreamt that Bob Mould had written a song predicting the break-up of the Posies based on the sexual abuse that came to light this year. Maybe inspired by the Posies song "Grant Hart".

I had a weird one right before I woke up this morning. I was in a record store and it looked familiar and there was music playing and I was digging it. It was this funky drummer music with a really pronounced bassline and there was this guy going crazy on flute on top. I never see the record store guy, but I asked him who is this playing? He said back it was Eric Dolphy. I said something doesn't sound like any I had heard before and he answered back that he had done a couple of soul jazz records and it was in the bin.

I get down into the bin and pickup this record and am looking right at it. Along the top of the record it had in real big block letters it said ERIC DOLPHY but the letters were made out of like plants, bushes and flowers. Below the block letters on the top was this idealic garden of eden like picture and the title of the album was "Pursuance of Peace". I thought that was weird, Eric Dolphy died - then I woke up.

"Your eyes are like sparkling supernova / With several smaller stars surrounding them"
And it was so poetic and over-the-top I got caught off-guard and started crying 😂😭😂😂😂

Dream: I am on the banks of a river and find a memorial to the spot where Brian Ferry left on his famous quest. It's a stone and redbrick memorial, cut into the bankside. I can't for the life of me remember what he discovered or achieved that rendered such a memorial necessary.

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Monday, 23 January 2023 18:09 (one year ago) link

Highly appropriate for Ferry, a quest for nothing. Was your brain doing some wordplay on his name, a boat for crossing the river?

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 23 January 2023 20:12 (one year ago) link

I wondered about the name. Wondered about Ferry as a louche Geordie Charon. The residual emotion from the dream was definitely one of frustration at not being able to remember the destination but I can totally dig that 'journey not destination' is appropriate for Ferry.

Was walking around Finsbury Park and ran into this self-effacing old folkie. As I left he was singing a song from the perspective of a wrestler asking his son if he really wanted to follow in his father's footsteps considering the amounts of injuries and etc. Decided to google the guy and he turned out be CORWICK MCCARTHY, a major player in the early 60's Greenwhich Village scene who also released a couple of Joni Mitchell covers records in the 70's.

Music was lovely enough that I actually felt quite sad I'd made it all up when I woke up.
