any indian riddims on there? man this is a weird world. (jon hassell: the islands of the 4th world can be seen forming in hiphop)

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:08 (twenty years ago) link

the only vaguely indian one is the one that kinda clones "snake"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:12 (twenty years ago) link

jimmy mathis has a kinda indian shuffle

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:19 (twenty years ago) link

see, it's funny cuz it's like the indian vibe played on fiddles and banjos and shit!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:23 (twenty years ago) link

careful strongo.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:26 (twenty years ago) link

b-but it is.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:27 (twenty years ago) link

its joyful then i'm guessing? i'm dloading it now btw.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:31 (twenty years ago) link

"jimmy mathis" contains the unbeatable line "fuck with me?/i don't think/you really can/when i get to doing/my hillbilly dance"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:34 (twenty years ago) link

bubba is kinda the rap homer simpson, if homer was southern

trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:44 (twenty years ago) link

doh!

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 06:48 (twenty years ago) link

'comin round' is so so good, and the missypropriation is done even better here than in 'ugly'. also, i like bubba, really i do, but can we have a remix of this feat luda or a mystikal please dear powers that be? (even banner or chingy or one of these new south guys'd be nice)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 24 August 2003 10:20 (twenty years ago) link

i love it when tim says 'hey people! let me show you the reverser trick!' like he invented backwards vocal or something

Alert Focus on the Family!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 24 August 2003 13:48 (twenty years ago) link

*Another* potential album of the year?! Sounds like the new Outkast has some competition in the "Oh GOSH, we are so fucked up, we're seeing some shit and we're putting it on wax!" stakes.

'In Da Mud' is on the record, right? I really got into that one. 'Deliverance' and 'Jimmy Mathis' are nearly as good as Kiley's 'Keep It Moving'. I think she's a guest on the record too.

I have high hopes for this, commercially as well as sonically. I'm one of those dudes who thought 'Lovely' was underrated after all.

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 24 August 2003 14:16 (twenty years ago) link

FOLKTRONIC LIVES.

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 24 August 2003 15:02 (twenty years ago) link

loving "jimmy mathis." that harmonica hook is bananas. and the "hillbilly dance" line is unbelievably great. worried that tim's trick of stealing his own songs is maybe getting played out, on "nowhere"- though it worked! the first time i heard it i was wondering the whole time where i'd heard that beat. duh, tim spells it out for me, it's "cry me a river." yup!

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 04:35 (twenty years ago) link

latter half is *not* fucked up enough for me

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 04:36 (twenty years ago) link

"like it or not" is reminding me of something horrifying...what is it..late 80's, I think...

HOLY CRAP it's "shakedown," beverly hills cop sndtrk, bob seger i think?? why am i making this connection? anyway yup, organized noize just brought over the drum machine they usually use with outkast. fun track.

rob geary (rgeary), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 04:39 (twenty years ago) link

bubba is kinda the rap homer simpson, if homer was southern

The Simpsons are from Kentucky!

"Comin' Round" was so good when I heard it in the car I couldn't keep my ass on my seat, I was having trouble driving it was so good. Like, take-control-of-my-body good. I wanna hear this album so bad now.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 05:00 (twenty years ago) link

it was on the radio?!!? btw im trying to finish my bubba feature right now if anybody has any ideas they want me to steal from them!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 05:08 (twenty years ago) link

it was on COLLEGE radio ha ha!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:20 (twenty years ago) link

I'm forbidden from playing it. "Too cheesy.." "Too country.." which is exactly why I liked it.

nick.K (nick.K), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:38 (twenty years ago) link

WHEN IS THIS OUT? NOW???

Jay K (Jay K), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:47 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah...hasn't it been out for a few weeks now? Or is it just mp3s shooting everywhere?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:47 (twenty years ago) link

I like the backing music, but I still can't get into his voice. On some of the tracks (particularly deliverance) he says things too quietly, like he's afraid to speak.

adam west (adamwest), Tuesday, 26 August 2003 13:50 (twenty years ago) link

It's not on Amazon yet ...

two weeks pass...
:) :) :) :) :)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 September 2003 14:23 (twenty years ago) link

it's quite clear that tim
knows nothing of country but
'brother where art thou?'

but it's really great
nonetheless, AND bouncing AND
soulful AND skillful

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 15 September 2003 14:43 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, the new video is well done and all, but they already did the O Brother thing in the "Lovely" video.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 15 September 2003 15:00 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, they should have called it Oh Bubba, What The Fuck?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 September 2003 15:01 (twenty years ago) link

tom I'm so tempted
to steal that for my review
(but of course I won't)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 15 September 2003 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

No please somebody do!!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 September 2003 15:37 (twenty years ago) link

According to the circular in this week's L.A. Times, the album is going to be selling at Best Buy for $6.99, which I find very exciting. I assume it'll be like that around the country...

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:12 (twenty years ago) link

timbaland says this is his best work and he's retireing from music after this

chaki (chaki), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:42 (twenty years ago) link

Timbaland is Robert Smith?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:42 (twenty years ago) link

Imagine Timbaland with the fright-wig hairdo and sloppy makeup growling his way through "Let's Go To Bed"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:45 (twenty years ago) link

Didn't he say that after the last Tim & Magoo album? And aren't they releasing another album this fall?

JS Williams (js williams), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:47 (twenty years ago) link

Imagine Timbaland with the fright-wig hairdo and sloppy makeup growling his way through "Let's Go To Bed"!

I am a happy man. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 September 2003 21:00 (twenty years ago) link

picked this up today for $6.99 even though i didn't really like "Deliverance" the couple times i heard it (not too into the acoustic guitar in hip hop like Cadilac on 22s). really digging it now listening to the whole thing.

so far greatest moment is in the intro someone humming Cream's "I Feel Free"

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 04:52 (twenty years ago) link

and the hi-hat pattern on "Warrant" is really wacky. almost wonderful, almost driving me insane

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 05:21 (twenty years ago) link

this album is amazing!! wow. i can't think of anything else to say. except that yeah, it probably is the best thing timbaland's done.

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 02:31 (twenty years ago) link

"Back in the Mud" sounds like Gold Chains or something. And "Coming Round" is gorgeous. This album is the surprise of the year, as far as I'm concerned. Once again, people: $6.99 at Best Buy!

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

WHEN IS THIS COMING OUT IN THE UK? we're having to put up with muse 'n shit like that here y'know

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 17:31 (twenty years ago) link

It's out here now. To very little fanfare tho', just like Dark Days, Bright Nights was sneaked out eventually. Pathetic.

Liking it a lot so far. I loved the debut too but this one really has the courage of its convictions. Good also that Timbaland didn't feel the need to double track the vocals this time out.

oh and:
TS: "Jimmy Mathis" v "Listen to the bass of get stupid fresh part 2"?
my money's on bubba.

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 16:29 (twenty years ago) link

:) :) :) :) :)

David. (Cozen), Thursday, 16 October 2003 08:56 (twenty years ago) link

There is no 'Work It' action in the UK version!!!

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 16 October 2003 09:44 (twenty years ago) link

Also, 'Nowhere' is one of the most emotional and loveliest songs I've heard this year for all its gritty rapping. Kiley Dean is great on the hook. This rekkid really is some of Tim's best work, don'tcha all think?

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:33 (twenty years ago) link

yes.

the Daily Telegraph, of all people, made it LP of the week last weekend. Their Saturday review section looks pretty good actually. Better than the bleedin' G******* anyways

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:19 (twenty years ago) link

Way better than the first, although that also had its moments. This time around they are taking the country/hip hop fusion seriously. No tongue in cheek. Only greatness.

'She Tried' is probably the first ever credible rap country ballad.

I love this record! Bubba is a fine rapper and Timba is just way ahead everyone else, including the bleedin' Neptunes. Much love!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:35 (twenty years ago) link

fuckkkkk.

as per my recurring refrain since my hard drive death the other month - does anyone have copies of the versions of "nowhere" and "comin' round" that segue fully into missy/justin respectively at the end? those weren't on the album and i no longer have them :(

not that i was ever aware of these segues and their importance but i do appear to have the 'coming round' one

EVERYONE Have NONE of you heard the pre-album mixtape for this? It was called New South and it's not the one you can get on iTunes which is some random Greg Street compilation. It's a 19 track affair entirely produced by Timbaland with mostly Bubba but also "the Muddkatz" - Duddy Ken, Attitude, RIcky Rucker, Kiley Dean, Petey Pablo and it's all really damn good. All originals except for 'In the Mudd' which is a remix of In da Club by 50.

You can hear it for free here - http://grooveshark.com/#!/playlist/DJ+Enuff+and+Timbaland+Present+Bubba+Sparxxx+and+The+Mudd+Katz+New+South+The+Album+B4+The+Album/66065631 - but I will find a way to get a copy to y'all if you want. I don't know where I originally got it.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 10 August 2012 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

Oh man! I'd love a copy. Heard it once, never got a copy for myself.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 10 August 2012 18:24 (eleven years ago) link

I would appreciate this, yes.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 10 August 2012 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

sisilafami, Friday, 10 August 2012 19:37 (eleven years ago) link

webmail me with your e-mail address and i'll get it to y'all? except ned can just check his fbook.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 10 August 2012 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

entirely produced by timbo?

well this should be a good indication of whether he has anything left in the tank or not

i may or might not liveblog this

heiswagger (rennavate), Friday, 10 August 2012 23:47 (eleven years ago) link

"Band Leader" is pretty cool. The first few tracks sounded awfully similar production-wise, but for a pre-album mixtape, what can you expect, I guess.

heiswagger (rennavate), Saturday, 11 August 2012 00:23 (eleven years ago) link

his percussion/drums still knock harder than anyone else's when he tries tho, as "tell me ya wit it" attests to

heiswagger (rennavate), Saturday, 11 August 2012 00:27 (eleven years ago) link

awesome farty horns that almost sound like spongy, squishy synths on "tell me about the south"... and operatic background OOHHHOOOOHHHS!

heiswagger (rennavate), Saturday, 11 August 2012 00:32 (eleven years ago) link

is that polow da don rapping on "put it on me"?

heiswagger (rennavate), Saturday, 11 August 2012 00:38 (eleven years ago) link

lol @ timbo's "damn how long is this song?" at the BEGINNING of the 3-minute "that's him" and the track's made of these really short three-note guitar licks, stays outta the way of the rapping but they're catchy on their own

heiswagger (rennavate), Saturday, 11 August 2012 00:42 (eleven years ago) link

this isn't from now - it's from back in the day. right before deliverance came out in 2003.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 11 August 2012 00:53 (eleven years ago) link

but if you haven't heard deliverance, you should be rest assured that it's like this but most of the time even better.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 11 August 2012 00:54 (eleven years ago) link

oh no i'm a dumbass i thought there was a new timbo-produced bubba album coming out :(

i like deliverance but bubba isn't a favorite rapper or anything

heiswagger (rennavate), Saturday, 11 August 2012 00:56 (eleven years ago) link

and i thought this was new. don't laugh too hard

heiswagger (rennavate), Saturday, 11 August 2012 00:57 (eleven years ago) link

i mean this is hard enough to track down that it may as well be. :)
