Remember when people used to wear a polo with a long sleeved dress shirt over it? And a jeans jacket ... Three fucking collars.

i had to check to see what year this thread was from. i guess i manage to stay away from a lot of polo-shirted people somehow. or ignore them.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I've done this when I've been at the beach too long and I don't want any more sun, so I put the shirt back on (I don't usually wear collarless shirts) and have turned the collar up to avoid getting a red neck.

I knew it! Flipping the collar up seemed sort of Spencer Chow.

I'm with Julia -- I don't encounter anyone wearing polo shirts, let alone with the collar flipped up. So I don't really have an opinion on it, I haven't seen enough it to care about it.

Oh, hello the frat rapist MGD-guzzling tennis club Maxim-reading young republicans of San Diego State University.

My dad does this. I am now mad at all of you.

old people don't count when it comes to fashion. i can't wait to be old.

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:44 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't flip (generally) but i do wear polo shirts!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm going to wear a polo shirt tomorrow and flip up the collar in defiance of this thread.

The Ghost of I'M FIFTY! (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:46 (eighteen years ago) link

You should rape a frat and guzzle a tennis club too.

I don't usually flip!

However, I can't really wear a t-shirt by itself, it feels strange to me to be collar-less.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:48 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't flip either, but some of my friends do and it works for them, not in the fratboy/sorority girl way either! also, pink is a good color, cam'ron should be commended for that.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Are we talking about, like, the WHOLE collar flipped up? Pics pls.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:54 (eighteen years ago) link

actually, wait, that's not true, i have flipped! guys, i'm a flipper. a blue lacoste with a PINK tee underneath, i totally flipped that. i haven't flipped since though, i can tell you that much.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Euro dudes do this all the time- over there it doesn't signify in the way it does in the US- here it means you are either hella gay or hella preppy/fratty in an unreconstructed scary ass fashion.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Or it signifies your ironic engagement with said stereotypes.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:04 (eighteen years ago) link

The Ghost of Flip Flip, MOTHERFUCKER (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Drew, the collar is always already flipped.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Ironic engagements should be cut short before they lead to marriage.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I wear it with a bandolier.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:06 (eighteen years ago) link

i like to cross things up by flipping and then adding a bolo. that really fucks with people, they're always like "wait, is that guy a fratboy rapist or an oil baron -- which is it?!" and that's my cue to make fun of erasure while i shoot at the ground.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:14 (eighteen years ago) link

that is quite an image

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm seeing this all the time now, and it fills me with huge contempt (more so than usual, that is). Simply put, if you do this -- YOU, SIR, ARE A FLAGRANT JACKASS!

in britain this means two things to me: "chavs" ie kids hanging out with trackie bottoms and ellesse polos, or coversely, upper midle class hooray kids who go sailing etc. and play rugby. leeds uni is stuffed full of them. (and they all say "uni" ulp)

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Tough to pull this off with real Lacoste shirts because they inexplicably cost $80.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:16 (eighteen years ago) link

there was a guy charging $100 cdn for them at the big street sale here last summer, and he only had two on display – if you wanted a different size or colour he had a runner who would go and fetch them from an undisclosed location. sketchy!! and they were selling like hotcakes anyway.

jones (actual), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Lacoste of living.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:38 (eighteen years ago) link

real lacostes are $90 apiece in canada. i don't think i've even seen a more bootlegged brand of clothing.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Flipping the collar up just seems strange. (I wear shirts with collars about, oh, ten times a year maybe.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:55 (eighteen years ago) link

That was actually something about half the major-leaguers rocked on May 8, for breast-cancer awareness. I didn't know what was going on at first, though. I thought that a pink wrist-band craze had just spontaneously swept baseball.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:05 (eighteen years ago) link

ok so at least those cuffs had a purpose. what about everyone else that sports one though? why why why?

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Baseball players are not the only ones who sweat.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:21 (eighteen years ago) link

dude no one breaks into a sweat in the law library. maybe on their brow when someone accidentally knocks their laptop cord out of the powerpoint. but the towelling cuff wouldn't help that.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:22 (eighteen years ago) link

are there any companies that make decent-looking clothes without stupid little logos on them? please?

uniqlo (except that front page makes it look awful!)

and inevitably, hennes and mauritz

as for the preppy look, well, i have been trying to buy cotton v neck jumpers for about 8 years now and am relieved that they are now around in numbers, i just wish i could have bought them when i was at school. there was no mention of them being "preppy" in the uk (maybe there isnt now), they were apparently just deeply unfashionable. but i loe them! i think this preppy look is pretty cool. it seems that peoples ire is mainly directed towards (if this isnt too unkind) YOUNG (RICH?) CONFIDENT people looking GOOD in clothes, rather than the trend itself.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 09:53 (eighteen years ago) link

ok i think maybe im just projecting my own resentment onto the rest of ILX. i sort of feel scorn for carefully made up looking kids with all this preppy attire, but i think im more jealous of them than actually thinking their clothes are stupid. although i dont really think the popped collar thing is cool at all. which is the whole point of this thread so, duh.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:18 (eighteen years ago) link

so wait, that pink polo i picked up at the thrift store like 4 yrs ago is now back in fashion? Can I casually wear it to the movies or only in more fashionable locales? I am fashion disabled and my wife's advice is untrustworthy because she likes to giggle at me in public.

I just bought it cuz it was le tigre.

How about the red OP one with the swath of white/black/green/orange/yellow across the top? Is that ok?

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Ive got sh1t loads of polos, but my favourite ones are the navy and white ones from tescos which i think cost £3-4.
The cotton is soft and they come through the wash still lookin gr8.
I often wear them to work.
btw search the penguin lamsbwool vnecks.

I have a whole bunch of polo shirts (including a couple of Lacostes) and I put the collar up on all of them.

But I can get away with this 'cos I'm British, gorgeous and superfly.

cozen: h & m got a decent lot in different colours a few months ago, at least. might have been in the winter seasons stuff. he trick is to pick up lots when they appear (i bought 6 in a relatively short period of time), before they change the bloody styles and forget them. v neck cotton jumpers should be a basic item, clothes shop people!

uniqlo also had some a while back but werent very fine. check h&m i think. they might have ditched them for summer, idiots :(

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:37 (eighteen years ago) link

funny, i nearly did a thread on this the other day. i almost got in a fight with a real arrogant public-school, city-working arsehole the other day. he shoved past me on a tube station escalator and nearly sent me flying, so i grabbed hold of his foot and tripped him up. he was wearing a pink ralph lauren rugby sweater with the collar flipped.
it's very much the preserve of privately educated young achievers, often with floppy hair, here and i hate it too.

You can see me every week hanging out with a different girl sitting next to me cause I'm not about to settle down right now I gotta be free some of y'all fellas might be jealous but y'all know that don't faze me I just pop my collar tip my hat and turn my backs on the ones who hated me.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

also, tip: united colors of benetton normally do a good range in cotton v. neck jumpers as standard. tho warning they do shrink quite a lot on first wash so probably buy a size above.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:25 (eighteen years ago) link

so i grabbed hold of his foot and tripped him up. he was wearing a pink ralph lauren rugby sweater with the collar flipped.
