I really like the new album, even if it has veered more towards Real Estate territory than his previous albums (i.e. more "songs" and less textural, for the most part). Fair warning though, I'm a sucker for this particular vibe right now.

yeah, been listening to the new one a lot too, "porch projector" and "killin' the vibe" do it for me

Are the ??? For the Vogue connection? Song sounds pretty good. Better than the title track, though the Supertramp whistle makes me chuckle every time.

mizzell, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 00:41 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, just seemed an unlikely place to premiere a Ducktails song.

I really, really like the new one. I get why its kinda divisive, I can see how people who loved the bedroom sound of the self-titled or Landscapes might be put off by how crisp and smooth this is. But I dig how it kinda hits the midpoint between Real Estate, Ford & Lopation 80s sounds, and like Kaputt era Destroyer.

hadn't heard these guys before, but i like the latest release, especially the duets with the lady singer. i take it it's kind of a departure from the other stuff?

tylerw, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

Well he started out doing pretty lo-fi, fuzzy guitar based stuff, but subsequent releases (esp 2011's III) saw him meandering a little closer to Real Estate (his other band) territory. this one is a huge leap in sound quality and collaboration. the Ford & Lopatin dudes also show up, there are a lot of guests on this.

it's pretty good! especially like the "letter of intent" tune.

tylerw, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

i dig this. i'm very happy that the pointless sax solo has made a comeback.

Spectrum, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 18:24 (eleven years ago) link

I like Planet Phrom (apparently a cover, he played it at Woodsist Fest and credited the songwriter, can't remember who) off Flower Lane. and Killin the Vibe is all time. other than those standouts though I think I liked Ducktails better when it was more distinct from Real Estate. (maybe not coincidentally my opinion of Real Estate went way up in the meantime, Days was fantastic ... didn't really get into the debut much)

Anyone else at the Lexington show last night? Phenomenal stuff; the new material is so much better live; looser, freer etc. And Matt Mondanile's guitar work was absolutely sublime. Could happily listen to him puttering about for hours.

Flower Lane is gorgeous. What Pitchfork listed as a defect of Ducktails -- Mondaile's preference for surfaces over substance, the fact that his songs do not "cohere" as neatly as Real Estate's songs do, for instance -- I think is one of his great strengths. If the songs felt like they were "going somewhere" they wouldn't have the magical, meandering quality that they do.

Best Ducktails, imo.

chromecassettes, Saturday, 22 June 2013 21:25 (ten years ago) link

it's hard for me to choose between this one and arcade dynamics, which is an album that make me happy whenever i listen to it. i think they accomplish different things.

one of those times where for a second i was mad at myself for not delving in earlier but then it sounds totally OTM right now while staring out at the bright frozen wasteland out the window. so i Ain't mad at me

it's a great album, one of my favorites from last year. the cover of "planet phrom" is a treat

Can't say I care much for Ducktails, but DJ Sprinkles' remix of "Letter Of Intent" is phenomenal, if you haven't heard Queerifications & Ruins:

Is there another thread dedicated to Ducktails' new album, St. Catherine? I thought there'd be more fans. I didn't even realize this was released until now. Listening. Reviews seem tepid, but I loved the last two albums, so...

this one is kind of growing on me, but as of yet i'm still listening to it more out of loyalty to magic first impressions with the last one than for what it does on its own

This is pretty disturbing.

Treeship, Friday, 13 October 2017 19:44 (six years ago) link

Dude's whole persona is about being chill, taking it easy, and wearing oversized oxford shirts. Getting sort of Jimmy Saville vibes from the gap between an orchestrated appearance and a sinister reality.

This must have been very serious for his high school friends to fire him.

Treeship, Friday, 13 October 2017 19:45 (six years ago) link

damn, that is lame — will not be checking out this dude's new record.

Good on them for sacking him *before* the allegations were even public knowledge, that's rare.

I'm honestly not sure if it's all that important to reach out to anyone except whoever was directly affected? Otherwise all you're doing is letting your fans know how correct and righteous you were to kick him out.

yeah i get not wanting to publicly shame someone (especially someone you were close with), but an abuser will often just keep abusing if there's not something specific put out there.
