Teams That Should Never Win A(nother) Super Bowl:

Jets
Patriots
Bills
Redskins
Vikings
Bucs
Jags
Raiders (while Al Davis is alive)

haha, someone's still pissed about 62-7!

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link

lol actually, I never saw that game. I didn't have working television at the time. Easy to forget just how awesome that early Jags team was, and how different a style of football they play now compared to back then.

My hate for the Jags is more based on the fact that we already had two pro teams in Florida at the time, which was more than enough, and that prior to them arriving, I could watch almost every Dolphins game on television, because Orlando was their secondary market (and there was only trouble when the Fins played an NFC team).

Now, the Jags are the secondary market here meaning at least 8 times a year I either have to get an illegal internet feed or go to a bar to watch my game, when the number of Jags fans in Central Florida is probably less than Dolphins fans (at least judging by unofficial Sentinel polls).

wait, San Te...are you IN Orlando? Because I'm right over in Brevard co.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

yep I live in Orlando, not far from downtown

metal panda (San Te), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Cool. I didn't realize any other ilxors were so close.

Teams That Should Never Win A(nother) Super Bowl:

1. 49ers
2. Cowboys (until the Jones family doesn't own the club)
3. Pats

I have enjoyed watching a decade of crap in SF. I hate those bastards only with the knowledge that eventually someone will have them being good again.

Raiders were a fun team when I was a kid and were on TV a ton in the early 80s. Jim Plunkett is one of my all time favorites.

This is mega-otm! Especially re: the niners, I'd be delighted to see them never have a winning season again. Steelers and Eagles round out the top 5 for me. I was gonna say Saints too, but now that they've won one I guess the floodgates have been opened.

I agree with what you were saying about Cinci too. Brown runs the team like a family business and makes no apologies for it. IIRC, one of Marvin Lewis' conditions for returning next year is that Mike Brown invest in a real player personnel department and improved facilities. We'll see how that plays out. Player personnel is really the biggest problem in Cinci, to me - they have a notoriously tiny department and Brown has a hand in every move they make. It's very easy to predict who the Bengals will draft in any given year, because they love big-name lottery tickets with bad reputations. 2009 was my favorite example of this - Andre Smith, Maualuga and Michael Johnson in the first 3 rounds? You can't find a more 'Bengals' draft than that. It's a canny strategy for a team that refuses to spend on talent evaluation, but it's still a losing strategy when you're competing with teams like the Steelers, who are able to draft for their system better than just about anyone.

Princess TamTam, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Who are the top five teams that NEED to win a superbowl?

thank you based jättegod (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Lions first and foremost, their fans deserve better.

Also Cleveland, for having their team ripped from them only to see it win a Super Bowl in Baltimore four years later.

metal panda (San Te), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah Cleveland in general has been stomped on so much you'd have to think everyone would be rooting for them.

Otherwise:
Lions (as mentioned, great fans, terrible team)
Jaxxxonville
Texans (uhhhh)
Seahawks

I am disappointed by this post. Go Bears!!!!!!!!

The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link

browns need to win a super bowl and go through the ravens to do it. also, ray lewis will be carried off the field after being knocked out after being bowled over by peyton hillis.

omar little, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

sorry to disappoint you Bill. I'm just not feeling the Bears this year. But you can laugh in my face when I'm proven wrong, lol

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 19:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I mean look at how the public views this team:

Week 1: Won on a controversial "no catch" call that will probably be changed in the rulebook this season.
Week 3: Beat the Packers on MNF in an embarassing game in which the Packers committed a franchise-record 18 penalties, negating all sorts of game-changing sacks, interceptions, and completions.
Week 4: Got destroyed by the Giants after http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png gets sacked 46 times; team actually gains NEGATIVE yardage in the first half.
Week 5: Backup QB Todd Collins throws FOUR picks, goes 6/16 for 32 yards. Luckily they are playing against the worst team in the league and they wind up winning anyway.
Week 7: http://c0848462.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/3d93bd2c4f3f1b33c02182fd0f20476f.png continues the trend by throwing four picks to the SAME PERSON.
Week 11: On a nationally televised game, the Bears win by shutting out Tyler Thigpen in one of the worst QB performances of the season.
Week 13: Rematch vs. the Lions; Bears trail most of the game but win thanks to a very sketchy "roughing the passer" call
Week 15: MNF vs. the Vikings - played after the Metrodome collapsed; the Bears knock out Favre and get to face Joe Webb (who almost nobody has heard of) the rest of the way.
Week 17: Make headlines for going "all out" to knock out their division rivals, score only 3 points
Divisional Round: Won vs. the worst playoff team ever in a game Seattle did not even appear to try to win

I mean you can't resent them for taking advantage of their opportunities but they only have one real 'signature' win (vs. Eagles) and don't rank high in anything. I think that's why most people are uncomfortable with them reaching the Super Bowl (as I recall, the 2006 SB team was kind of crap too)

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Also they have literally not had a single significant injury which is mighty fortunate (and unlikely)

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Good analysis, frogbs!

polyphonic, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Beat Philly.
Beat New York Jets.
Beat Green Bay.
Make the playoffs.
Get a home game in the playoffs.
Earn a bye.
Win a playoff game.

"I mean look at how the public views this team"

I couldnt give a flying fuck how the public views this team.

The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

damn i can't wait for the bears to stand up for cancer patients worldwide and knock the packers back to the tundra wastelands~

omar little, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm just explaining why the public and many of the posters on this thread are so down on the team. I mean GB beat the Eagles and Jets too (and the Bears once). If Calvin Johnson's catch was ruled as such, how do the playoffs shake out? With the Bears as a 5/6 seed?

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Hypotheticals are irrelevant. If a frog had wings it could fly. If my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle. Who cares if Johnson's catch was ruled that way? it wasnt, let's decide it on the field.

The Curse of Dennis Stratton (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

My aunt had a dick that she kept in a jar on her desk. used to scare the shit outta me.

thank you based jättegod (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

If you want to think that way, why is there any reason to discuss the game at all? Bears are 11-5 and Packers 10-6. So Bears win.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 20 January 2011 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, no problem except that parcells was a paid-employee of a division rival at the time.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 20 January 2011 14:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Never was quite sure what Parcells was doing for the Dolphins in the first place. Now i guess i know, strengthening their division rivals.

frogbs, Thursday, 20 January 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

don't think there's anything wrong w/ what parcells did, I think everyone should work towards good people getting coaching jobs and that should be considered outside of any rivalry. you want to win cause you had the best team on the field, not because you beat poorly managed and coached teams.

iatee, Thursday, 20 January 2011 20:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I put all my chips ($10) on Pittsburgh in my friend's big playoff pool, because I can't bet against the Bears. This week I am a Steelers fan.

I'm sure these werent the only fools at this Times Square rally who were on the Giants bandwagon just a short three years ago.
