A must-watch for Long Winters fans. Certainly the first time I know of that Roderick has been so detailed / forthcoming about the "creative difficulty" he has experienced over the past few years:
http://www.roxwel.com/player/thelongwintersinterview2013.html
The "difficulty" part starts around 11:00, but the whole 25 minutes is terrific. Dude is beyond brilliant, and I hope he's able to get some new music out soon.

Both When I Pretend To Fall and Putting The Days To Bed are close enough to perfect.
It'd be a real bummer if that interview I posted two years ago is gone for good. By far the best - only, actually - explanation for Roderick's musical disappearance I've ever seen/heard.

Whew, did he ever. What’s worse are some of the vile tweets being dug from 8-9 years ago.

yeah.... wow
does anyone who followed him more closely have any insight on some of those tweets' approach to, say, jewishness—are they just bad jokes? is he jewish?

Well Ken Jennings is working overtime defending him on Twitter pointing to his “pro Israel” stance during their podcast together... not that this makes anything better.
Another podcast just dropped his theme song.

It’s kinda funny to see all the disingenuous “I can’t believe he got canceled over beans” tweets. Like, no, people started paying more attention to him and found his old homophobic and anti-Semitic tweets. That’s what got him canceled. In that way it’s weirdly fitting that Jennings, of all people, is defending him so hard today.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Sunday, 3 January 2021 23:45 (three years ago) link
Metafilter guy defends him too:
I never knew about his shitty tweets from early twitter days, they're terrible and he should have deleted them years ago & explained why with a big ass apology. Also he should fess up to being a bit of a fabulist storyteller. Instead, he deleted everything, which is disappointing— you say you want a resolution (@mathowie) January 4, 2021
Personally, I found "Punk Rock Is Bullshit" inspiring at the time. Obv some of those old tweets are indefensible.
― fajita seas, Monday, 4 January 2021 03:20 (three years ago) link
I clicked through to one of those threads before he deleted it all and it's butt-obvious that he was just doing one of those "let's talk like a movement racist to clown on the crazy things they say" thing, which is cringy, fine, but he's obviously not an actual devotee of the Protocols. (I am Jewish.)
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 4 January 2021 03:45 (three years ago) link
I saw a few of the screenshots (someone’s tweet + his apparently anti-Semitic reply) and the irony wasn’t apparent to me. Is he Jewish?

I mean, I know they have a podcast, but about what?
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 4 January 2021 16:00 (three years ago) link
They do a podcast about literally nothing, and their popularity continues to confound me, but whatever.
re: Roderick--Dude is obviously an asshole, there's no defense for his assholery, and he should apologize for it. But the contemporary internet's inability to distinguish poorly-executed irony from sincere bigotry is unnerving to me. I mean, I can *understand* it, given that plenty of true bigots have used irony as a fig leaf for far too long. Why give any stranger the benefit of the doubt, there?
But people on the internet have developed this bizarre sense of epistemic entitlement, like *they* know who people *really* are because of their old tweets or whatever. And then, when people who actually, personally know whatever asshole is getting canceled this week (in other words, people who actually have some credibility to speak to said asshole's character) pipe in to dispute the cancellation narrative, they get shouted down, too. This is ridiculous, and, (I know I risk sounding like some kind of Intellectual Dark Web choad here), I think it's also potentially dangerous.

I don't even want to get into this argument now, but you do realize that this edgelord bullshit "I can say racist and hateful things because I'm ironic, maaan" is completely indistinguishable from actual fucking racism and hate to anyone who doesn't engage with the 4,000 hours of content people like this dude pump out, right?
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 January 2021 16:13 (three years ago) link
I agree with you! Which is why I also think it's best that people don't perform that kind of edgelord nonsense on the internet in the first place (apologies if this wasn't clear in the first post). It can obviously do real harm. But I still find the mass reaction to the harm very unsettling. IDK. It's bad feelings all around.

Hosted by oldest brother, Justin McElroy, middle brother, Travis McElroy and “sweet baby brother,” Griffin McElroy, the show answers viewer questions, as well as some of the funnier queries on Yahoo Answers. The humor rarely comes at the cost of other people, and if listeners correct the brothers on something the brothers said that was wrong or potentially offensive, they are quick to learn and apologize.

i know someone who was in his previous band (western state hurricanes) and in fact they all played together in 2019 or early last year to reissue their unfinished album. I dont' know details about him though and didn't ask, but my impression has always been that he was a slacker gen X dude who thought he was funny and wry, and those 'edgy' jokes don't land well (and never did). What's amazing is, considering how online he is, how he never had the foresight to think 'hey maybe this shit doesn't go over very well, maybe people aren't going to find it amusing'. This seems to happen a lot. I can't comprehend it.
― akm, Monday, 4 January 2021 17:13 (three years ago) link
he just seems like one of those people that spent so much time in the podcast/comedy/indie rock/NPR cultural-industrial complex that it never occurred to him that he would ever be interacted with by people that didnt think he was smart and cool. clearly thought of himself as A Big Intellect in a way that didnt accord with his actual career fronting a boring indie band and being a guest judge on comedy podcasts or whatever. i'll be glad as younger gens continue to chew these useless guys up and spit them out

I just came here to link that. That's a great piece, IMO she completely nailed it, and she makes exceptional observations at the end. The points she makes about restorative justice and retributive reactions is extremely valid as well; restorative justice is a big movement, the school district my kid is in has embraced it, and I think it can be useful, but how does that fit with this desire to cancel people immediately for unwise statements?
― akm, Tuesday, 5 January 2021 15:32 (three years ago) link
It’s a well-written apology, but not entirely convincing. The bean story itself had read (skimmed) to me as a dumb, strained attempt at humor by a pompous, unfunny person – but I see how it may have been triggering to others and I he seems to have addressed that angle thoroughly. As for the old tweets – maybe because I just saw a few screenshots without the larger context, I definitely didn’t perceive the satire. They were pretty hardcore. It’s clear he at least on some level relished deploying those tropes for reasons beyond “taking the slurs of the oppressors and flipping them” (whatever that means). Like Brad said, just saying certain things reveals your character. He sort of dances around this (“the words themselves have power”) but his insistence on his “good intent” seems to fall short of total honesty.

Yeah, in the original story, he also stressed her difficulties with spatial skills and process visualization, that the cupboards were bare, and that he insisted no one would eat a bite until she figured out the can opener on her own. The version in the apology is very different. I could see the original being humorous if it had been clearly intended as fiction.
