What is the best classic 12" dance tune on Ben Liebrand's "Grand 12-Inches 2" compilation?

I need to research some of the obscure trax on utube but 3 of my all-time favorites appear back 2 back on the list. odd & maybe even prophetic.

3-01 Sharon Redd - Can You Handle It (François K Mix) 8:58
3-02 David Joseph - You Can't Hide (Your Love From Me) (12" Version) 6:41
3-03 Sharon Brown - I Specialize In Love (12" Version) 7:13

quality linking T, but so many fewer stone classics on this one. voted Trapped, and there were only a few close contenders.

I don't understand why Liebrand decided to include the live version of "Can You Feel It" instead of the album version, though.

almost certainly because he couldn't get the album version, c'mon

But he had no problems getting various 12" versions of The Jacksons and Michael Jackson tunes on other "Grand 12-Inches" compilations, so I don't see why he couldn't get that one. They were all released by the same label.

I thought the reason might be that there's no special 12" version of "Can You Feel It" (i.e. the 12" single had the same version as the album), but that applies to a few other tunes on this comp too, such as "The Message" and "Pop Muzik".

My 12" version of "Pop Muzik" has a catch-groove

(The b-side has 2 concentric grooves with the normal A and B sides)

Mark G, Monday, 10 January 2011 13:10 (thirteen years ago) link

What's a "catch-groove", is the thing that does an infinite loop?

Tuomas, Monday, 10 January 2011 13:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes.

Mark G, Monday, 10 January 2011 13:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually, I'm wrong.

It catches a loop as part of the track, then hits a reverse sound and ends suddenly.

Beg pardons.

Mark G, Monday, 10 January 2011 13:24 (thirteen years ago) link

But he had no problems

you don't know that!

Can You Feel It was a slightly more recent and definitely bigger hit that the joint on Grand 1, maybe they wanted more $, or had already licenced it for another comp that financial, or Michael had taken the masters home to add more squeaks to or something

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Monday, 10 January 2011 13:54 (thirteen years ago) link

definitely

hmm, maybe not at the time. definitely feels like a muuuuuch bigger "legacy hit" tho, certainly more likely to have had another licence staking claim on it by the early '90s

ah no! forget all that, it's bcz

Could be, but on the later Grand 12-Inches comps Liebrand includes even bigger and MJ hits ("Billie Jean", "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough"), as well as another tune from Destiny. Maybe Liebrand just got a bigger budget for the later comps? OTOH, "Grand 12-Inches 3" also includes a live version of Commodores' "Brick House", so maybe he just wanted to add a couple of live versions for some personal reason?

ignore all my earlier theorising! the post you x-posted is my final, definitive, and least pulled-out-of-my-arse theory.

Thumann's Underwater is the best thing here imo

Haha, I guess you could be right, though it's still a bit odd to include the live version because of that 2-second shout sample, as seminal as "Can You Party" is.

I would like a copy of this.

Voted for "Trapped".

It's pretty hard to pass Sharon Redd in this one, but I have a perverse urge to vote for "Axel F" which, if you can get past all layers of pop culture mud it's accumulated, is a dope tune.

1-10 Telex - Moskow Diskow (French 12" Version) 7:28 2
1-01 Telex - Moskow Diskow (English 12" Version) 5:25 1

Therefore, it wins.

seven years pass...

These comps have me like ooh, dynamic range, there it is. Even the tunes that I love a bit less are a pleasure to listen to.

Shame he couldn't get the Latin Rascals' remix of Axel F as it totally smokes the originals.

The odd thing is that the Latin Rascals version of "Axel F" is included on this earlier Liebrand-curated disco comp:

Tuomas, Monday, 1 October 2018 19:05 (five years ago) link

On his site the notes for this volume say a decent master (of the Latin Rascals version) couldn't be found. Maybe the one on that comp wasn't up to snuff.

Do you get the upgrades, Tuomas?

the sun-dried raisins of muesli (Noel Emits), Monday, 1 October 2018 19:24 (five years ago) link

I have that "Disco Madness" comp, I don't remember the Latin Rascals version having any issues with sound, but I haven't listened to it in years...

No, I haven't gotten the updates, they're only available if you order the discs through Liebrand's own site, right? I did that a couple of times, but the delivery prices were a bit ridiculous, cos the only delivery option he offered was DHL, you couldn't choose regular mail.

Tuomas, Monday, 1 October 2018 19:42 (five years ago) link

There's a way to subscribe to all the updates if you bought them elsewhere - it's a bit wacky, I think you send a photo of a complete set and pay €20. Something like that. But you can get the ones for the volumes you but direct anyway.

Notable on this one is there's supposedly a full version of Disco Circus (the one on the CD is partly from a vinyl copy and quite noticeable.)

Actually according to the Discogs entry that's not a thing, not sure where I got that from. Still quite a few alternatuve versions.

I had never heard "Underwater" before today. It is now in my top 5 disco songs of all time.

Freddy "Boom Boom" QAnon (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 14:42 (five years ago) link

It is indeed awesome! There's a nice cover version of it by Kat Mandu too.
