NOT how to dress well, christ, they can stay the fuck away

i'm really not bothered about whether the cassie album comes out actually: it's unlikely now that any of the 20 or so leaks i've loved in the past 3 years will make the cut. i want those songs to get their due but as i've said elsewhere, the most likely thing is some sort of retrospective rediscovering her as a cult artist 10 years hence

huge overlap in sound and increasingly imagery and mood

yeah a big part of the confusion is because "post-dubstep" covers such a broad spectrum of sounds and moods (being that it's kind of non-existent and all)

I look forward to the inevitable Soul Jazz double cd curated by How To Dress Well and Salem in partnership.

... The futureproofed daring of Cassie's recorded work was deemed unacceptable by a facile and superficial listening public to busy wondering whether they should have put a ring on it, and Cassie was for a time consigned to a life in the underground, with homemade tapes handed around at witch-house parties. The growing cult finally earned a name for itself in 2012 when Salem dropped the rare 7 inch release "Cassie Fan Club" featuring prominent vocal samples from unreleased Cassie song "Skydiver"...

Tim F, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:13 (thirteen years ago) link

... The next major development in the Cassie Fan Club movement was How To Dress Well making a positive reference to her music on Twitter...

do salem read ilx or was cassiefanclub a bigger joke than i realised?

I'm old-fashioned and like to think that "scene" should still have some grounding in geography.

Still, seeing as her own scene has evidently decided it can't be bothered with Cassie she might as well go chasing the FACT magazine audience if only to give her something to do. Still, Cassie doing witch house would be appalling, Cassie doing post-dubstep probably not much better. Shame this couldn't have fallen in a way that involved her voicing icy MIA-style minimal, but that obviously won't happen.

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:20 (thirteen years ago) link

idk you have to imagine that if these guys are really that into her music, they would um keep that in mind when producing stuff for her if i mean you know that were ever to happen

plax (ico), Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:22 (thirteen years ago) link

that is, its not certain that the dude from htdw would try and manhandle her into his sound.

plax (ico), Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:22 (thirteen years ago) link

The history of cross-genre collaborations suggests the exact opposite actually.

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:23 (thirteen years ago) link

History of tunes sampling Cassie to date supports matt more than plax here.

Tim F, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:27 (thirteen years ago) link

sampling is kindof a diff thing tho right?

plax (ico), Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:28 (thirteen years ago) link

yah like maybe thats just optimism and naivety, optimism and naivety

plax (ico), Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Alright bootlegging or remixing her vocals then.

Tim F, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Also what would be the point of oOoOO or Girl Unit or whoever just making a fake Connecticut Fever type track? Better to put together a collaborative track that suits the producer AND actually plays to her strengths, but from what I've heard of witch house in particular its a genre exceptionally ill-suited to her. Likewise anything with exceptionally heavy dubstep bass would make her voice sound ridiculously thin.

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:33 (thirteen years ago) link

from what I've heard of witch house in particular its a genre exceptionally ill-suited to her

as i said, creep would be my pick - their sound isn't as overwhelming as salem/white ring, their track with romy xx displays surprising pop instincts and they're working with nina sky, who aren't a million miles from cassie vocally.

kingdom sampling cassie obv worked really well, too.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:39 (thirteen years ago) link

and most of the remixes on the skydiver package turned out alright! brackles and slackk maybe the picks there.

ew gross the kingdom thing was all wrong, i love him and all but no

tbf this isnt a million miles away from a ryan leslie production.

plax (ico), Monday, 10 January 2011 00:00 (thirteen years ago) link

kind of weird if the narrative is becoming that Cassie's music is just too out there or forward-thinking or something for the label whose 2 releases in the past year were Last Train To Paris and The ArchAndroid

some dude, Monday, 10 January 2011 01:11 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think that's really the narrative al, at least not now - but if Cassie does ultimately get the retrospective treatment you can bet that's how it'll be framed.

Tim F, Monday, 10 January 2011 01:13 (thirteen years ago) link

wont it be more "too fragile and small, like a tiny precious flower that nobody noticed dancing in the wind"

plax (ico), Monday, 10 January 2011 01:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah even though that's more representative of current fan club sentiment, the whole point is that the retrospective take will be massively off-base.

Tim F, Monday, 10 January 2011 01:33 (thirteen years ago) link

i sincerely believe the album is coming out this year. let's hope "let's get crazy" is left off.

LOL guys. So I just got back from seeing How to Dress Well (I know, I know) and I spoke to Tom after the show. Two things:

1) He apparently has been chatting with Cassie on Skype and the whole 'working together on a track for his album' thing might really happen !!!
2) He seemed fairly confident from those conversations that her album would be coming out sometime in 2011, if not on a big label/Bad Boy/whatever, then on something smaller.

cassie singing over a how to dress well song would be a disaster tho unless he decided to record music not like an asshole

lolllll

(Also, on a totally unrelated note, while I really quite love his album he had a cold today and dropped an octave out of the falsetto for one or two songs and MY GOODNESS he has a wonderful (traditionally good) r&b voice when he's not pitching himself up into sad nostalgia indie range. in an alternate universe there is a version of Love Remains which features him singing in his regular singing voice with fuller studio production and it is a BANGING r&b album. he also did a 100% faithfully earnest cover of 'I Wish' by R Kelly which was sort of wonderful)

Alex in Montreal, Monday, 31 January 2011 06:31 (thirteen years ago) link

his "i wish" cover is great

Great update Alex in Montreal. I tried listening to How To Dress Well and my first impression was it sounded like an indie guy singing half ass faux quiet storm music. However, I'm willing to listen to him again.

Also, I hope this album is released in a smaller label. That way it won't have this impossible expectation to sell Rihanna/Beyonce like numbers. Plus, with this seemingly indie love she is getting it would be interesting how they advertise this album.

Plus there is this:

Um...I mean, if HtDW isn't your thing it isn't your thing (Lex, this means you). He's part of a particular subset of underground/lo-fi music these days whose tastes and interests musically are firmly in the world of R&B, bass and dance stuff (and who often have quite good taste when it comes to these genres), but whose music doesn't necessarily reflect that, or at least not the values that more 'traditional' fans of those genres might zoom in on. End result is it appeals more to people who might completely ignore the stuff they're using as inspiration than those with similar musical affections.

Which is just a long round-about way of saying that it will make Lex apoplectic. :)
