i love "turnin' me on"!!!!!!!

coming home reminds me of empire state of mind only worse. yea yesterday is also p bad
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 9 January 2011 16:58 (thirteen years ago) link
ha i know you do, and so does ship
"coming home" is kinda saccharine like that johnny, yeah, but diddy's rapps are ok, even dare i say touching, so it gets pass from me
don't get the hate for "yesterday" unless yall are just kneejerk breezy hating
― fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Sunday, 9 January 2011 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link
btw what do you guys think the worst track is? for me it's either "Looking For Love" or "Strobe Lights"
― some dude, Sunday, January 9, 2011 9:35 AM (3 hours ago) Bookmark
"strobe lights," yes -- i love lil the vocoder part at the end of "your love" -- kinda wishing they had integrated that more into the song
i'm not a huge fan of "love come down"
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 January 2011 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link
well that's a bonus track on the deluxe version that's not even an option in this poll.
original "Angels" single version would easily be my least favorite song out of this project, but the synths on the remix redeem it somewhat.
― some dude, Sunday, 9 January 2011 19:39 (thirteen years ago) link
i love "love come down" and am actually disappointed it's not on the main album - hate the recent trend for artists/labels to disown underperforming lead singles
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:21 (thirteen years ago) link
^^^ Was just thinking that yesterday. It really encapsulates that air of lack of self-confidence about pop music these days, like, "oh we thought this was good but if the public doesn't take to it we're gonna assume the crappy track we'd red-marked "album at best, outtake possibly" is better".
― Tim F, Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:34 (thirteen years ago) link
"massive attack" vs. "your love" GRRRRRRRRRR
i mean ultimately it's also the fault of all the appalling people without taste who actually made "your love" a success instead
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:40 (thirteen years ago) link
"Massive Attack" was the example I was thinking of actually, w/r/t a bounty post on Nicki (though not on "Massive Attack" itself). Especially given it was such a "statement" first single, and then it's not like they're entirely pretending that side of her doesn't exist.
― Tim F, Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:43 (thirteen years ago) link
i was wondering what you actually thought about nicki, don't think i've ever seen you post about her!
i voted for "massive attack" in my p&j which was a STATEMENT of sorts
given the amount of bonus trax you'd think they could've at least have dumped it on pink friday at the end
there was also ciara's "go girl" in the fantasy ride era, which underwhelmed me as a single but finally grew on me at around the time i learned it was being purged from history, stalin style
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:46 (thirteen years ago) link
Haha with Nicki it gets actively 1984. We were always at war with Eurasia!
― Tim F, Sunday, 9 January 2011 22:48 (thirteen years ago) link
wtf @ all this 'strobe lights' hate itt
― dayo, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:40 (thirteen years ago) link
so how is the deluxe 17 extra minutes if there's only two extra tracks adding up to 7 minutes? methinks wikipedia track length=wrooooooooooooooong
― mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Sunday, January 9, 2011 9:58 AM (33 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink
there are 2 tracks added to the main sequence, plus 2 more bonus tracks ("First Place Loser" and "Love Come Down")
― some dude, Sunday, January 9, 2011 11:35 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark
which version is this? the amazon deluxe one I got didn't have either of these tracks. looking now, the itunes deluxe has first place loser but not love come down.
smh @ amazon

"strobe lights" is v.great
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:42 (thirteen years ago) link
"I know" is the worst song imo
― The Brainwasher, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:43 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah - I mentioned this in the other thread but the opening weezy verse is so ruthless xp
― dayo, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:52 (thirteen years ago) link
nah it's got plenty of ruth
― fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Monday, 10 January 2011 00:53 (thirteen years ago) link
weezy parts are just ugh and the beat sounds like a less catchy version of "the way i are"
― some dude, Monday, 10 January 2011 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link
The physical deluxe version does not have either "First Place Loser" or "Love Come Down".
― one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 10 January 2011 03:22 (thirteen years ago) link
But yeah basically hating iTunes right now for making "First Place Loser" Album Only. Fuckers.

"Strobe Lights" was the exact moment of my first play that I freaked the fuck out about how good this is. Worst song is "Loving You No More".

Apparently J. Cole wrote "Coming Home"?
jcole would make a great ghostwriter

wrote the rapps?

i've said this before but i wish drake would cease all rap music & just do r&b for himself/other ppl
― J0rdan S., Monday, 10 January 2011 04:20 (thirteen years ago) link
i've said this before: NO
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 10 January 2011 08:43 (thirteen years ago) link
"first place loser" is kind of really, really great
― dayo, Monday, 10 January 2011 15:16 (thirteen years ago) link
the intertwining melodies on the chorus, the call and response, the layered vocals, if the diverging melodies on 'ass on the floor' was a heroin this is a fucking speedball
― dayo, Monday, 10 January 2011 15:47 (thirteen years ago) link
those synth...woodwinds! fuck it, idk!
― dayo, Monday, 10 January 2011 15:50 (thirteen years ago) link
I'm gonna make a deluxe deluxe edition of this poll, you watch me

like, can someone else say something nice about "Someone To Love Me" so I don't feel like a weirdo about it
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 10 January 2011 18:32 (thirteen years ago) link
i like it a lot, although it never feels like a standout because it's surrounded by songs i like more
― some dude, Monday, 10 January 2011 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah.
― flutes & fucking mexican death horns (The Reverend), Monday, 10 January 2011 18:34 (thirteen years ago) link
one of my favourites - actually disproves the line that diddy hands over vox to others so much because he's incapable of carrying the album, because he pretty much carries that song with some of the best (and oddest) lyrics on the album (apart from dawn's kinda amazing chorus - love how she deliberately mimics an old blues sample, feels incongruous but fits perfectly)
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 10 January 2011 18:35 (thirteen years ago) link
I said it on the original thread: it's my favorite Diddy rap in years. In a couple of spots he even apes Chuck D's post-1994 intonations (thinking specifically about "He Got Game").
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 January 2011 18:36 (thirteen years ago) link
I always just assumed that was a sample.
― flutes & fucking mexican death horns (The Reverend), Monday, 10 January 2011 18:36 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah thats one of the best tracks, maybe my 2nd fav after ass on the floor
― ciderpress, Monday, 10 January 2011 18:37 (thirteen years ago) link
it may well be a sample, i haven't seen proper credits yet, but dawn sings it in the video

Top 3:
"Ass On The Floor""Shades""Hate That You Love Me"
Also love "Angels" actually, though the Serani version is better I think.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link
wtf @ "shades" love - i mean it's not unlistenable, and justin's verse is kind of mesmerizing even if it's objectively evil, but of all the songs??
― fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link
90% for the "Woah!!!! What you gonna do when I'm perfect for you??" multitracked pinnacles. But I do love JT's sub-Drake verse too.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link
It's kind of the most Last Train To Paris moment on Last Train To Paris.

"Shades" is dope
― flutes & fucking mexican death horns (The Reverend), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 02:40 (thirteen years ago) link
Shades is fun. JT's grocery bags are at least forgivable because they aren't done in earnest as a serious rap. whereas Drake/Weezy/kayne and company I can picture leaning back and going "whoAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" after every hashtag they toss out
