What do you think of this wacky idea:

I want a track bike (for kilo/pursuit/points race) but I also would like a TT bike for stage races.

Other than obviously the gearing, cockpit (+cables) and the hub widths, these bikes (frames/geometry/wheels) really aren't that different right?

So I was thinking, is it possible to do two bikes for the price of one (well... 1 1/4?)

And then I thought, what about a fixed/SS TT bike (drilled for brakes)?

Most of the TTs out here are pretty flat out and backs without a lot of bumps/rollers.

Is this wise economical thinking or pure idiocy?

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 13 January 2011 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

i think you could do a tt/pursuit bike theoretically, but i think a kilo/points bike would be a distinct setup?

i knew a guy who tt'd for real and very well on a fixed/ss bike aero bike with a single front brake, but i don't know if he used the frame for pursuit or what.

i've heard the name but he was after my time.

i've never done a mid workday ride, that seems like it would be weird! also i would not get home til like 9 pm.

the entire premise of your tweet is incorrect (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

What about those bulbous Bolle's? Trying to figure out which were worse. Whichever it is, gotta love Grewal wins.

what do you think about drop handlebar shapes...?

i have only rode a "classic bend" and frankly think shallows and ergos are D-U-M.

I have only used a wooden racquet and think graphite and oversized heads are D-U-M.

shallow = awes

ergos = suxxx

i have ergos on my good bike! :(

Gerard vroomen goes on a lot about this on his blog.

I have ergo on the condor and shallow on the BMC. I find the Ergo more comfortable but I think the position is a bit better on the condor.

I should really get classic bend for the Moser but might buy better bars for the BMC and shift everything down.

i don't have an official opinion on bar shapes other than it should be wide enough for good control + breathing, and positioned so that you can be as comfortable and aero as possible. personally, i am an ergo user. i am not a fan of real deeps, but then i used to ride with rather a lot of saddle/bar drop to start with.

the most recent big shift seems to have been in early 2000s when lever positions were rotated way up toward the bar tops. that looks wrong to me, as the hoods should be level imo. and it feels wrong to me, since i chose the right length stem and do not need a shorter cockpit.

i have a set of salsa shortnshallows on my iro, and i like em for that application.

yeah, niche-y, that's what i meant (Hunt3r), Thursday, 13 October 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

what do level hoods look like exactly

am0n, Thursday, 13 October 2011 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

like the top of the brifter is level with top of the bars or just having the grip part flat?

am0n, Thursday, 13 October 2011 18:17 (twelve years ago) link

?¿?

am0n, Friday, 14 October 2011 14:17 (twelve years ago) link

you should be able to lay a ruler or spirit level along the top of your bar and on to the hood, and it should be flat. that's the look to go for (stretches you out a bit more too)

problem chimp (Porkpie), Friday, 14 October 2011 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

right ok

am0n, Friday, 14 October 2011 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, this is an issue that applies mostly to ergo bends and brifters. these bars and brifters generally are shaped such that the extension portion of the bar will be positioned nearly horizontal or horizontal. that brifter bodies originally (early 90s) were made to go horizontally as well, such that you basically have a long flat. around 2000, you started to see climbers push the brifters back, consequently causing the brifter bodies to be angled significantly upward. this makes for a shorter position that actually does work fine for long climbs- your chest is open for breathing though you are a bit less aero. otoh, your brake lever position when youre in the drops is slightly worse. i guess you could ask "why would YOU ever be on the brakes in the drops it will only slow you down and drops are serious business." xpost

for classic bends, not really the same since the curvature starts right at the bend transition, there isn't much of a flat to begin with.
