To promote a song?

If you skip straight to the end of a load of tracks on yer ipod, they're scrobbled. I think the criteria are different for various sources.

I suppose that's it.

If you look at JustFine2007's listening history, she seems to have Mary J. Blige on continuous play, 24 hours a day.

What do you have against Mary J. Blige?

2 things I've never ever understood the love for. Janet Jackson and Mary J Blige.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 13:31 (fifteen years ago) link

er it seems fairly obvious why people love them? they're both superstar legends...MJB's voice alone should be a clue.

Lex > Scott Walker has an amazing voice, do you listen to him?

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

He's not a superstar legend... anymore

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

i like scott walker but don't listen to him much - i tend to admire his work rather than love it. nb i've only heard his scary dystopic later albums, not the earlier stuffz

i mean it's not just MJB's chops i'm talking about, it's the amount of emotion she conveys - when u hear songs like 'not gon cry', 'i'm going down' or 'be without you', even if it's not your thing you can surely hear why people connect to them emotionally? and that's not even going into how she pretty much invented hip-hop-soul. i'm surprised you don't like her considering you like rufus and chaka khan - what did you think of her version of 'sweet thing' (which was one of the tracks that made MJB's name back in the day)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 14:10 (fifteen years ago) link

if you don't love some Janet you are pitiful!

GSOHSHIT (blueski), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 14:16 (fifteen years ago) link

I have never heard 1 janet song that i liked. But it's not like you love anyeverything steve.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyway Lex, jeff buckley has an awesome voice that conveys emotion but I bet you don't like him, and I'm not gonna hold that against you.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 15:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 15:34 (fifteen years ago) link

do you like any post-'79 US pop? i mean how could someone like a few Madonna songs but zero Janet ones, for example?

GSOHSHIT (blueski), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 15:34 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm not saying everyone has to like modern US pop - just that if you were to say you did but weren't including Janet in that you'd be crazy. singling Janet and Mary out in this regard just seemed odd (esp. over Whitney and Mariah imo).

GSOHSHIT (blueski), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Cant stand mariah but i liked some whitney back in the day. Wish she had laid off the ballads though.

Neil S, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:54 (fifteen years ago) link

how do those charts work? surely it can't be by plays

k3vin k., Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes indeed, if you're talking about charts on user's profiles.

Neil S, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Must stop using the word "indeed".

Neil S, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:58 (fifteen years ago) link

no i mean for the group. like for example kanye is leading with like 56 or something. that can't be plays...is that 56 members?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 2 December 2008 17:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I was wondering about that as well. I'm a member of the ILXor group, but I'm not sure my plays get scrobbled to the group charts automatically.

Why do ilxors listen to Radiohead so consistently?

Ringtone Tycoon (The Reverend), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:23 (fifteen years ago) link

most of them have pretty bad taste (the rest of the chart backs that up)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Just to be clear, I'm not asking why so many ilxors listen to Radiohead, I'm asking why they listen to the 'head on such a consistent basis. It's not like they've just released a new album or anything.

Ringtone Tycoon (The Reverend), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

oh i'm asking why they listen to radiohead at all. if nothing else surely you've got to be in rather a bleak place to do that regularly? i don't like to think of people being unhappy.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:07 (fifteen years ago) link

It may have something to do with the amount of live bootlegs around. I know i tend to listen to bootlegs of bands who i have been intoa long time (yes Radiohead are one such example, though i havent played them in a while)

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't listen to Radiohead enough.

Teahouse Foxtrot (blueski), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Btw have a look at the charts going back to 2006 http://www.last.fm/group/ilXor/charts . Radiohead werent always top.
The Knife Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo and The Rapture were very popular

Belle & Sebastian seem more the consistently popular band on ILX.

btw if ilxors just queue up a playlist on shuffle chances are it will play 1 song by any of these popular acts. It only needs 1 play to get on the ilx chart. It doesn't mean people are listening to radiohead all the time, it might just be 1 track a week.
