J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

curious @ what kind of teenage boy was lex? Be and my best friend would watch Troma shit, John Waters shit, Sam Raimi ish all day long. Blast Ministy and Anthrax records and play Mortal Kombat and fuck yeah dude

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't see how odd future's horrorcore silliness is any less enjoyable/more offensive than standard coke-dealer gangster shit. if anything the latter's more offensive cuz it takes itself so much more seriously

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

it really is just teenage boy skater/class clown shit filtered thru 'slim shady lp'

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

seriously

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

there's two diff things at play

1. do you think skater pranking shit like this is fun personally? this is debateable
2. is there a sense of fun in odd future's music? i think this is not v debateable

And southern-by-way-of-El-P beats.

rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Plus like with the "Earl" video... it's so obvious they DON'T drink that drug concoction (it would probably literally kill everyone who did) and half of their "bleeding" is obviously just for shits and giggles. The seizure, too, obvs fake.

rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

1. do you think skater pranking shit like this is fun personally?

yeah i basically think this is the worst shit

this conversation has actually made me dislike odd future way more than i did based on the music!

it's so obvious they DON'T drink that drug concoction (it would probably literally kill everyone who did) and half of their "bleeding" is obviously just for shits and giggles.

well yeah duh but it's not funny

yah its not like that video deej posted of dudes gangraping some girl during a home invasion or w/e - its a more muted/straightfaced take on like louis logic-style shock lolz, maybe?

amazed at the amazement that lex does not like o.f.

Well, I'm not saying it's necessarily funny, but there's a difference between "funny" and "fun."

BTW... Louis Logic. He put out two great records then fell off the face of the planet.

alright post #12 whiney

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:29 (thirteen years ago) link

im cool w/ people being defensive about odd future, its weird to me though when you guys try to make the case that its somehow 'superior' to 'other rap' -- like this weird strawman gangster rap that takes itself soooo seriously ... the biggest gangster rap hero on this board for the last few years has been gucci who doesnt take himself seriously whatsoever. and odd future dudes repeatedly claim inspiration from the gangster stuff that shakey would *r m d e* at i.e. waka.

i think the punk ethos by way of rapping makes sense as a defense but itt lex is being pretty reasonable about explaining why he doesnt like it. i feel similarly altho more 'i would have loved this when i was 16 ... but im not' than 'i never would have loved this'

its also weird to me that like ... "it's so obvious they DON'T drink that drug concoction (it would probably literally kill everyone who did) and half of their "bleeding" is obviously just for shits and giggles."

so whats so great about insincerity & irony exactly? they're tools used just as sincerity is used by lil boosie, it doesnt make one inherently better than the other like i feel that post is arguing

this is a weird statement to make considering this thread is gonna bear out that most of us actually like 'gangster rap' more than odd future this year

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:32 (thirteen years ago) link

so you mean shakey

J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah let's have THAT argument again...
xp

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

also the beats i've heard from odd future aren't the sort that automatically push my pleasure buttons and override all of this (like jerk or three 6 mafia or WAKA) - they're the kind i actually need to be into the lyrics and aesthetic to appreciate

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm pretty hard to offend tbh - I was referring to lex being offended by odd future in case that wasn't clear

? i dont think gangster is 'better' than odd future either, and i wasnt saying 'everyone in this thread thinks oddfuture>gangster rap.' although i do have an ideological/political bias arguing that theres a good reason the drama around drug crime / drug prohibition is so central to rap

Yeah, I wasn't trying to say that at all. I wasn't making a value judgment, nor saying that there's anything insincere or ironic about the video.

you're the one who posted the gangster rap is more offensive because they're more sincere which is clearly absurd -- i never made any statement about what you voted for or whatever! relax dude - this is exactly why i wanted to take an ilx break -- if u guys dont want me sharing my opinions then fuck it, im out

i voted for this one! was a big big part of my summer. i love how pretty it sounds - "don't be scared" and "get on 1" are prob my favs off it

xps re: jacka & laroo

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

i liked odd future more than 'other rap' this year w/ i guess the exception of e-40 and like 'hard in da paint' but its not a general case or anything

i mean odd future works w/ a sensibility & 'language' thats a lot closer to the other music that i primarily listen to - its v much a subjective thing - so i 'get' why i gravitate towards it way more than freeway or w/e but i wouldnt make the case that its inherently 'better' just that its successful and compelling when taken on its own terms

⊚ ⓪ ㉧ ☉ ๏ ʘ ◉ ◎ ⓞ Ⓞ (Lamp), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

The thing is, there's only so much I can listen to Odd Future, too. It's the same reason I was never into Slim Shady LP-era Eminem, or songs like "Kim" (which I detest); much like Lex, that aesthetic just doesn't do much for me. I love a lot of Odd Future stuff, but I never play it over and over, if that makes sense.

also just wanna say that youth was also important to jerk, and it's not like no one ever mentioned the youth element of various emergent cultures. and this is rather like jerk was produced by one group of teens, crewing up like teens do, with whatever youthful virtues of energy & fun & etc. and with sophisticated raps & technical chops, which jerk was always (charmingly?) deficient in. so i guess 1) it's not like youth wasn't important to jerk 2) there are unsurprising reasons ppl mention they are kids from time to time

zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:42 (thirteen years ago) link

But I mean, at the same time, when ISN'T youth important to music, period?

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link

it's important to varying degrees, and is usually mentioned in rough proportionality to those degrees
