also, i was listening to some promos yesterday evening, and who pops along later but...the artist themselves! he has hardly any listeners so obviously i showed up...he is a son of one of the kinks (whoever they are) who makes pleasant electro, and he clicked on to my page when i was listening to the slushier end of the slim (from 112) solo album. and...

Lex, aren't you a music critic or something? How can you not know anything about the history of popular music?

No offense, but I don't think a movie critic could be just like, "Hitchcock? According to the press release he was some old geezer who made thrillers in the 50s, whatevz."

This is taking the piss though

1 Mary J. Blige 189,439

I just counted this: let's say the average Mary J Blige tune is 4 minutes long... If you assume this person has spent 8 hours every single day listening to nothing but Mary J. Blige, it would've still took her over four years to reach that number! So she's gotta be cheating somehow.

― Tuomas, Tuesday, December 2, 2008 8:01 AM (3 hours ago) Bookmark

He/she has an average of 551 tracks a day... I think it's only possible if she cuts the songs down to the minimum scrobble time (30 seconds or so?). Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 11:55 (fifteen years ago) link

it's just about possible if you leave the music playing all day and all night

braveclub, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 12:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah she must repeat stuff on itunes throughout the night. God knows why you'd want to do that, but there we go.

Neil S, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 12:18 (fifteen years ago) link

To promote a song?

If you skip straight to the end of a load of tracks on yer ipod, they're scrobbled. I think the criteria are different for various sources.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

He's not a superstar legend... anymore

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

i like scott walker but don't listen to him much - i tend to admire his work rather than love it. nb i've only heard his scary dystopic later albums, not the earlier stuffz

i mean it's not just MJB's chops i'm talking about, it's the amount of emotion she conveys - when u hear songs like 'not gon cry', 'i'm going down' or 'be without you', even if it's not your thing you can surely hear why people connect to them emotionally? and that's not even going into how she pretty much invented hip-hop-soul. i'm surprised you don't like her considering you like rufus and chaka khan - what did you think of her version of 'sweet thing' (which was one of the tracks that made MJB's name back in the day)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 14:10 (fifteen years ago) link

if you don't love some Janet you are pitiful!

Anyway Lex, jeff buckley has an awesome voice that conveys emotion but I bet you don't like him, and I'm not gonna hold that against you.

do you like any post-'79 US pop? i mean how could someone like a few Madonna songs but zero Janet ones, for example?

GSOHSHIT (blueski), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 15:34 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm not saying everyone has to like modern US pop - just that if you were to say you did but weren't including Janet in that you'd be crazy. singling Janet and Mary out in this regard just seemed odd (esp. over Whitney and Mariah imo).

GSOHSHIT (blueski), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 15:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Cant stand mariah but i liked some whitney back in the day. Wish she had laid off the ballads though.

Neil S, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:58 (fifteen years ago) link

no i mean for the group. like for example kanye is leading with like 56 or something. that can't be plays...is that 56 members?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 2 December 2008 17:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I was wondering about that as well. I'm a member of the ILXor group, but I'm not sure my plays get scrobbled to the group charts automatically.
