APC is Vanity Sized!"

sad, that was not the case back in "the day".?)
in other news that shop also sells Momotaro Jeans outside of Japan which is crazy to see! I got a chance to tour their factory in Kojima in 2001 (maybe 2003?), that is a pretty dope operation they have got going. Really amazing attention to quality.

I think Blue in Green in New York sells Momotaro too.

thanks SS! my mom seems to think salt will help. is this true?

i use salt for dyeing - afaik the salt only works to open up the fibers.

I am so fucking fed up with jeans. I just bought a pair that fit like a glove in the store and the first time after being washed but after a couple hours they're too loose and bagging out in places.

Also, was it Levis that would make you jeans in your exact proportions? How much is that. I think I'm about at that point. Do they still do that?

also lol

More than half of women (54 percent) try on at least 10 pairs of jeans to find one pair they would buy.

Maybe this is my problem. I hate clothes shopping and trying on clothes in particular. I don't have the patience.

ENBB, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link

you should by jeans that are too tight

max, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

that way when they loosen up they fit

max, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I just wear whatever version of a Levi's low-rise skinny jean I can find in my size and in Short for not more than $60. Maybe 2% stretch or so certainly doesn't hurt.

Very grateful to whomever started cutting the asses of women's jeans higher than the bellies -- I need far less coverage in the front.

x-post Yeah I know but then I always get worried and then they're not going to loosen up and I'll wind up with too tight jeans and buyer's regret. :( Oh screw it. Next time I'll go tighter.

Yeah I don't think these have enough stretch. Also bought regular length which is ok because I'm wearing flats but I couldn't wear bought with these. DAMN YOU JEANS! One day I'll find my perfect match. One day.

ENBB, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

couldn't wear bought with these

err boots

ENBB, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i used to have that same fear, and then i bought a pair of jeans that seemed way too tight, and i was afraid to wear them out, but then i did, and in like 3 hours they fit perfectly, so

max, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 21:07 (thirteen years ago) link

enbb, i recommend madewell rail straight. really good cut, not too tight, though the lighter washes stretch out more.

also can i say that acne jeans are horrible and the sizing is insane

daria-g, Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:11 (thirteen years ago) link

uhhhh, men's jeans <> women's jeans.

save up for APCs, ENBB. they're my gal's favorite, she has a few pairs and loves them (because they are not lycra/poly blend like 99% of womens jeans). not cheap tho, and if you're impatient you may hate them at first.

cozey, <3 those rapha's, even *I* shudder at the price tag though, holyyyyyyyy.....

i cannot wait to buy a new pair of real jeans for spring! maybe they will be apc and maybe i will buy them in nyc

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 17 February 2011 13:48 (thirteen years ago) link

You all know I'm a budget jeans gal and also p curvy in the ass etc so I usually get mad at all those upmarket slim/straight brands, but I'm going able to do some nice stuff in March and maybe checking out the world of nicer jeans will be one of them. We'll see. Rrrrob, I will def go to APC w you, though!

Hm I wonder if I got the rail straights in a big enough size and had them hemmed at a cropped length, if they would work for me? Going on the list!

nyc gals also check out uniqlo's unisex denim, tho ymmv with their purely women's line.

A Scanner Snarkly (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 17 February 2011 16:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Pretty sure Uniqlo isn't an option for me, I don't think their sizes go large enough. Tried it once, a few years back.

one year passes...

So upthread, someone mentioned about apc's lasting 10 years or whatever. Do people wear these (or other expensive, high quality jeans) to do yard work or otherwise live an active outdoor lifestyle? Or are they primarily just worn as urban casual wear?

how's life, Sunday, 20 May 2012 14:31 (eleven years ago) link

I can't afford expensive, high quality jeans (bitter) so I just get Tommy Hilfiger skinny jeans at Macy's. Honestly, they have been the fitting jeans I have ever owned. That isn't saying much though.

I have a really bad relationship with jeans. At a year old I was given my dad's old, vintage baby pair of Levi's that my mother later cut (mutilated and killed) and turned into shorts. UGH! Would love that pair now for my little girl. Also, because it was the first and last time I was ever in and owned a cool pair of jeans.

At 7 my grandmother bought me a pair with a huge parrot embroidered all the way down the right pant leg and had a matching vest with parrot. Then at 9 I had a pair of Del Rio Jeans, ugh! Made in Del Rio, TX and they had a huge faux leather tag stitched on the back that broadcasted I was proudly wearing poorly designed jeans made in the armpit of Texas. They were snug at the waist with really wide legs that never tapered, just BIG all the way down. I got made fun of when I wore them to school on the day we didn't have to wear uniforms.

Wore 501's most of my adult life. Sad story, me and jeans. Always wanted a nice, selvedge pair that fit perfectly and yes, that were mega pricey. Oh, before Macy's, bought my jeans at Target! How's that for fuckin sad :(

I realized the other day that the jeans I was wearing (from the Banana Republic sale rack; trouser style, I guess you'd call them) were putting me dangerously close to Mom Jeans territory :(

*tera, Saturday, 26 May 2012 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

i am kind of tired of covering my body below my waist. no matter what i buy, it is always slipping down off my bony ass. if i buy slim, it hugs my thighs in unpleasant ways. if i buy high waisted it cuts off blood flow to my spare tire. i am going to sell all my $300 jeans and switch to sweatpants and muu muus

the late great, Sunday, 27 May 2012 21:28 (eleven years ago) link

if you're going to go for "giving it all up in the name of comfort", buy yourself some scrubs.

how's life, Sunday, 27 May 2012 21:42 (eleven years ago) link

I basically have two kinds of jeans, my work jeans which are all cowboy cut wranglers, and then my everyday jeans which are ralph lauren Double R L and marc jacobs wranglers, both are my favorite jeans, were raw denim, but have worn well. I'd like to buy a few more pairs of the marc Jacobs wranglers but ebay is the only option now.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 27 May 2012 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

so you wear wrangler to work, but not the selvage?

how's life, Sunday, 27 May 2012 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

My work wranglers are the 16 dollar slim cowboy cut, the guy at work call them Stranglers. My wranglers with selvage are one of my "nice" pair of jeans.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 27 May 2012 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

Got it. I was trying to work out a couple posts ago whether "nice" jeans (which are often spoke of for their durability) are suitable for dirty work and outdoorsy adventure. you would say no, then?

I don't know anything about nice jeans. Best I do are maybe a $40 Levis, but I usually go for wranglers. But I've been intrigued by the legends of durability that surround raw denim.

how's life, Sunday, 27 May 2012 22:28 (eleven years ago) link

I've had these for 3 years now and they were almost black when I first bought them. I've only washed them every 6 months and never dried them.

JacobSanders, Monday, 28 May 2012 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

I find myself struggling with anything that isn't a v slim or skinny fit, as my legs are sparrow-like. It's really annoying especially when trousers have way too much fabric at the ankle/foot. So been trying to get stuff tailored a bit lately, it's tricky enough tho.

holy eff i tried on like 30 pairs of jeans this afternoon in epic jeans trying-on session. there's a store near my place called jeans jeans jeans and they are rad there but you need stamina. funnily enough i ended up buying the first pair of jeans i tried on. sigh/lol. i tried on so many butt-flattening, love-handle making jeans, argh. anyway, the jeans i got are Nudie jeans, "tube kelly", and they are rad. unisex jeans for me all the way.

seriously i almost cried after about 30 min. never try on jeans when you have pms btw. i forgot.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 22:04 (eleven years ago) link

these jeans are only getting more and more awesome
and i have worn them a lot

i told this guy last night that they were the kind you don't wash for 6 months and he was kind of horrified, haha

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:36 (eleven years ago) link

Wait, excuse me? You don't wash them for six months??

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:37 (eleven years ago) link

i wear those same jeans :D i get some "girl jeans" comments sometimes but whatevs.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

you're not supposed to, no!
i would've been horrified upon being told this by the jeans people, but i've known about this no-washing-of-quality-denim thing for years, just have never bought a pair with this dictum
xp

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

that's funny because in the store i was like "i thought nudie only made guys jeans" and was told they're unisex. not that it matters; good fit is good fit.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

Wow! I feel like most jeans lose shape after a couple wears. I guess these don't because of the quality?

I'm done with summer skirt/dress shopping for a while now and have been losing some weight. I think maybe next month when I'm at goal and have a little more $$ I might get some real quality jeans for the first time ever.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

these jeans are not losing their shape, so far so good, and i've worn them several times with lots of walking and dancing and sitting down, yknow, the stretch-'em-out activities. i hate jeans that stretch out after one or two wears; they are so over for me.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:48 (eleven years ago) link

You would be crazy to wash raw denim for at least 6 months, maybe a light hand washing. Quality jeans will grow into their shape the more you wear them without washing, especially if you buy the right fit. Although I have a friend who is serious about jeans and bought a very pricey pair of japanese jeans and climbed into the bathtub filled with hot water with them on. He said they are the best fitting jeans he owns now.

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:51 (eleven years ago) link

yeah if something horribly dirty befalls me while i'm wearing these jeans i will prob just jump in a lake with them on or something

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

my inner dirtbag is thrilled btw

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

no no no

you should always soak your raw denim for 30 minutes or so in cold water (no soap) and then hang-dry them. this will remove the starch, open up the denim a bit and get any shrinkage out of the way. if they're well-dyed jeans you should hardly notice any loss of color, though they will lose that crispy shiny look.

then you can go ahead and do what jacob is saying.

the late great, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

those jeans aren't stretching because they're not 100% cotton (they're a stretch blend w/ 2% elastic polyester)
