maybe i'll try drip for a change tomorrow

positive reflection is the key (harbl), Monday, 3 January 2011 00:05 (thirteen years ago) link

the paper absorbs some of the oils & other compounds

dayo, Monday, 3 January 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I dunno maybe that's just parrotting received wisdom. I haven't tried paper drip in a long time but iirc there def was a difference between paper drip and other types of drip (swissgold, sock filter)

dayo, Monday, 3 January 2011 00:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I used to use this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-gWPQvdDqs

but it got wearisome to take care of the sock

dayo, Monday, 3 January 2011 00:15 (thirteen years ago) link

there's also something called a 'columbia press' which is the same idea as the french except it uses a double walled thermos so your water doesn't cool down during the extraction process

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgzE245ELoM

probably makes a better cup than a french but doesn't look as sexy so

dayo, Monday, 3 January 2011 00:19 (thirteen years ago) link

that's probably true about absorbing the stuff, now i remember that being one of the reasons i like french press better. the oily stuff is still there.

positive reflection is the key (harbl), Monday, 3 January 2011 00:29 (thirteen years ago) link

sometimes when I leave my cup for too long and come back to it I see like an 'oil slick' floating on top of it, it's all iridescent and stuff

wonder if you would get that with a paper drip

dayo, Monday, 3 January 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I just finished my morning cup btw xD

dayo, Monday, 3 January 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i've been considering a bialetti

positive reflection is the key (harbl), Monday, 3 January 2011 00:44 (thirteen years ago) link

those are intense and have a really high rate of caffeine extraction, mine kind of screwed up my caffeine tolerance

dayo, Monday, 3 January 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago) link

oh those moka pots? they're supposed to be good

old man yells at cloud computing (am0n), Monday, 3 January 2011 01:10 (thirteen years ago) link

that's just a moka pot copy innit?

dayo, Monday, 3 January 2011 01:17 (thirteen years ago) link

My brother & parents use inexpensive Zabar's versions of the one-cup drip things cos they don't make more than 1 cup at a time, mostly, but it IS a pain for two people wanting more than a cupful.

All taste concerns aside, my bro refuses to buy an electric coffee-maker because it takes up space and will eventually break in some way, whereas now he just chucks the red plastic thing into a drawer. Bravo.

I think the article writer not only hates coffee, he hates life itself.

one month passes...

aeropress dudes, I am reading good things about this

http://coava.myshopify.com/products/disk-coffee-filter

price seems a bit steep but hey it's reusable

dayo, Saturday, 19 February 2011 11:01 (thirteen years ago) link

we were watching The Trip earlier and were like "wow are there restaurants out there that serve up pots of plunger coffee http://www.friendlyskies.net/aoiforum/extensions/pun_karma/icons/thumbs_up.gif

yuoowemeone, Saturday, 19 February 2011 12:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I broke the glass vessel of my press pot. ;_;

go peddle your bullshit somewhere else sister (Laurel), Saturday, 19 February 2011 13:34 (thirteen years ago) link

aeropress is made of polycarbonate, won't break

I ordered a coava metal filter for my aeropress :o

Neu! romancer (dayo), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 16:30 (thirteen years ago) link

o yeah i actually tried making my own from my drip machines permanent filter

http://www.beveragefactory.com/images/research_center/goldtone-filter.jpg

but cut the circle too small

am0n, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

why would you do this? not enough counterspace for a stack of paper discs?

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link

if u have to ask

am0n, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link

im sort of on tracers side here but i am gonna be interested to hear what dayo has to say when he gets that metal filter.... like can it really make that much of a difference?

just sayin, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

also i like how easy it is being able to push the whole thing into the bin

just sayin, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

doesn't the metal filter let more oily stuff through

Secrets will not Block Justice (harbl), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 23:36 (thirteen years ago) link

hah well somebody stole my stack of paper filters from the pantry. \O_o/

I like my aeropress but the coffee I get from it is a little too 'clean'

also I like the idea of not being dependent on another consumable when I make my coffee

also I am a nerd

Neu! romancer (dayo), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 23:56 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i think that is what i would not like about aeropress, i like a little muddiness

Secrets will not Block Justice (harbl), Thursday, 24 February 2011 00:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i think we have the same coffee concerns, dayo. we should have a radio show called "coffee concerns"

Secrets will not Block Justice (harbl), Thursday, 24 February 2011 00:15 (thirteen years ago) link

totally, we could talk about the price of coffee in china

Neu! romancer (dayo), Thursday, 24 February 2011 00:18 (thirteen years ago) link

that might only be my coffee concern though. also in my head I hear the sound of a cup filling up as the intro soundbite

Neu! romancer (dayo), Thursday, 24 February 2011 00:27 (thirteen years ago) link

in my head i imagine people giggling at it because it sounds like someone peeing

Secrets will not Block Justice (harbl), Thursday, 24 February 2011 00:31 (thirteen years ago) link

coffee does make you pee though, I like the two-pronged approach

Neu! romancer (dayo), Thursday, 24 February 2011 00:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i retired my aeropress btw its swissgold from here on

am0n, Thursday, 24 February 2011 02:24 (thirteen years ago) link

neato!! I was afraid you wouldn't like it. I think both have their uses. find that grind size is croosh to swissgold - right now I'm working through a bag of terrible, coarsely ground coffee that someone gave me, and the coffee is so weak - it's cause the grounds are so coarse that the water just passes through in like 30 seconds

Neu! romancer (dayo), Thursday, 24 February 2011 06:43 (thirteen years ago) link

this ethiopian yirgacheffe I picked up yesterday is so dope I'm so happy wahahahaha

Neu! romancer (dayo), Thursday, 24 February 2011 23:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i do like it, its as good as the aeropress but easier to clean/operate so pretty much im just lazy. what grind do u find works best, i've using medium

r.i.p. hamilton (am0n), Sunday, 27 February 2011 21:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I use medium-fine, a good way to judge is to time how long it takes for the water to 'clear' - around 3-4 minutes is good I think

Neu! romancer (dayo), Sunday, 27 February 2011 23:58 (thirteen years ago) link

wish I could read all this japanese

Neu! romancer (dayo), Monday, 28 February 2011 00:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i got a new kind of coffee i've never gotten before today. whole foods "island blend." because i get those 24 oz bags for 10.99, i feel they are the best value. still french pressing & using cheap blade grinder.

also i just realized we had that whole paper vs. metal filter talk a month ago. my brain is deteriorating.

Secrets will not Block Justice (harbl), Monday, 28 February 2011 00:54 (thirteen years ago) link

i got a hand crank burr grinder--i can detect a slight taste difference but im not sure its worth it vs the convenience of the blade grinder

max, Monday, 28 February 2011 00:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the process tho

max, Monday, 28 February 2011 00:56 (thirteen years ago) link

feel like it would be a terrible waste if dayo and harbl were radio hosts and they only talked about coffee

plax (ico), Monday, 28 February 2011 00:58 (thirteen years ago) link

what kind did you get max

Neu! romancer (dayo), Monday, 28 February 2011 01:01 (thirteen years ago) link

hario slim

max, Monday, 28 February 2011 01:02 (thirteen years ago) link

dont get me wrong i like the coffee from the hand grinder more, its just that the blade grinder is so easy

max, Monday, 28 February 2011 01:02 (thirteen years ago) link

thats the one I have, I like it a lot

Neu! romancer (dayo), Monday, 28 February 2011 01:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I read that williams and sonoma started carrying hario's line of coffee equipment, no longer makes me feel 'cool' to have one tho, probably will switch to something more exotic yamean

Neu! romancer (dayo), Monday, 28 February 2011 01:04 (thirteen years ago) link

i might buy one of those lil animals that poops out the good coffee

max, Monday, 28 February 2011 01:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i am also still cheap blade grinding and french pressing, thought i kinda want a drip w/ a stainless carafe so that i can make more coffee and keep it warm.
got a giant bag of fair trade organic sumatran at bj's that was such a good deal it makes me worried i'm going to be stuck w/ 3 lbs of really shitty coffee.
