i'd agree that last.fm isn't perfect (same w/ youtube) but they are by no means "terrible" -- unless you'd like to qualify that for us

last.fm is just a bunch of ppl who like to broadcast their music tastes to other ppl!

using a service that most people aren't on to get a sense of what's popular makes no sense

I was too, didn't hear what others seemed to be hearing. Agalloch way too fucking low. I realize that album on the verge of being the metal world's 2010 Arcade Fire album (in that it shows up on every damn list), but it really really is that amazing. Had to drive in to work last night for the first time in months, cranked it up really really loud for the commute home, and fell in love with it again.

I love deej's passion on this, but its pretty much not worth the time to argue with him. He's going to dismiss anything that doesn't back up his assertations that "gangster rap" is some criminally underrepresented genre that billions of teenagers are listening to.

last.fm's user base is a lot more self-selecting than youtube's, which pretty much is composed of everybody with internet access.

terrorizer list is interesting,

the good: electric wizard top five (haven't heard the album proper, but given their quality control i naturally assume it's got to be really good); swans #7 even though it's kinda-not-metal; twilight mid-list, that's good stuff;

the bad: lots of good stuff placed too low (alcest, nachtmystium, shining, agalloch, slough feg, ludicra); no yakuza at all

the ugly: burzum top ten

I was surprised the Burzum placed so high. Terrorizer have covered Swans since the mag started so that was no surprise at all.

youtube stats are, on the surface, not 'scientific' bcuz there can be multiple uploads of the same track, or an artist can have more tracks up than another. but both of those things are likely to skew in favor of gotti, not arcade fire
