even the youtube comparison is kind of impressive for arcade fire. u wouldn't expect ppl to "consume" arcade fire thru youtube like u wld yo gotti, right?

zvookster, Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:30 (thirteen years ago) link

why not?

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:33 (thirteen years ago) link

uh, all the reasons stated by you and others upthread about how social media and streaming sites represent a bigger piece of the pie for mixtape rappers than for AOR indie bands?

hann am0n tana (some dude), Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont recall saying that about youtube but about illegal downloads / bootlegging & what audiences are likely to pay for CDs. just because someone pays for a CD doesnt mean they dont stream youtube when they're at work / dont feel like getting the cd

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:36 (thirteen years ago) link

like, the question isnt 'who is likely to stream' its 'who is likely to pay money for a musical product'

those are related but not inverted questions

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:37 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess? i mean the much-referenced datpiff streams music too, it's not all downloads.

hann am0n tana (some dude), Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:48 (thirteen years ago) link

i think of a lot of modern rap as being more song-oriented where someone might just play the track(s) they like 10 times on youtube or whatever vs. a rock artist where you're only considered a 'fan' of the artist if you have the album and can name every song off it

hann am0n tana (some dude), Thursday, 30 December 2010 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

like it doesn't seem like a fluke that there aren't a lot of "check out this cool song i found on youtube" posts on ilx rock threads like the ones you fill the rap threads with

Arcade Fire's biggest viral video wasn't on YouTube; it had it's own website because it utilised html5 code. Just saying. Also 3million AT ONCE vs 3million over the lifetime of a video on YouTube (ie several months) is a BIG difference.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 30 December 2010 04:17 (thirteen years ago) link

dont worry, deej is still otm -- he just hasn't figured out his next move yet

this is so dumb

theres also gonna be like 5 times as many yo gotti tracks as arcade fire tracks in a given year. most of which are all competing for views on youtube.

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Thursday, 30 December 2010 04:59 (thirteen years ago) link

and ilxor should really stop posting until hes doing something other than scorekeeping & otm-ing more times than a 2008 hoos with meth in his dr pepper

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Last.fm

Arcade Fire

Yo Gotti

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:02 (thirteen years ago) link

^^ not scorekeeping, just another glimpse of reality

i know you dont care

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:03 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah sorry dude i dont consider last.fm anything like a scientific sample, no

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:05 (thirteen years ago) link

'reality'

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:05 (thirteen years ago) link

and i dont even know how to being to process the apples / oranges comparison that is a live streaming show being compared to streaming youtubes of album & mixtape tracks

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:07 (thirteen years ago) link

so basically there is no "accurate" sample that you'll accept, because the available samples all disprove your claims

right

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:08 (thirteen years ago) link

glad that is settled then

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:09 (thirteen years ago) link

wtf why would last.fm ever be an accurate sample

call all destroyer, Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:09 (thirteen years ago) link

^^

markers, Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:10 (thirteen years ago) link

why would any inaccurate internet site be a perfect (i.e. "accurate") sample?? last.fm, youtube, whatever, it's all just snapshots of people listening to stuff. but it's all we have to go by, unless deej is to be believed saying "i got no evidence, perfect or otherwise, but trust me, i am right, k?"

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:12 (thirteen years ago) link

just b/c you clocked 200k arcade fire plays in 2010 doesnt mean it's not a decent talking point

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:13 (thirteen years ago) link

right--we shouldn't go by terrible statistics just because they're the only ones we have

still got <3 4 u dude, but i have to agree w/ what cad said upthread

markers, Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd agree that last.fm isn't perfect (same w/ youtube) but they are by no means "terrible" -- unless you'd like to qualify that for us

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:14 (thirteen years ago) link

last.fm is just a bunch of ppl who like to broadcast their music tastes to other ppl!

markers, Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:15 (thirteen years ago) link

using a service that most people aren't on to get a sense of what's popular makes no sense

markers, Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link

last.fm is for college student for chrissakes

call all destroyer, Thursday, 30 December 2010 05:18 (thirteen years ago) link

You cannot accurately judge this in either direction. The winner is Take That because they sold 1.8million albums in 8 weeks or something.

no fucking clue where dude is getting these stats, but

whiney that seems to be the stats of a shitty tumblr

who illegally downloads music videos?

uhm i was a member of an invite-only rap vids room on slsk tbh :/ but eh yeah i doubt it's common. in this case they're talking about streams tho and it's just some shitty tumblr, honestly

I just got back from the town centre with my copy and saw your email haha. At least it saves me from typing it up lol

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Good list but some bands way too low (or high)

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 30 December 2010 11:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Darkthrone will find it difficult to circle that single wagon ;_;

Neil S, Thursday, 30 December 2010 12:32 (thirteen years ago) link

i was disappointed with that sabbath assembly album

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 30 December 2010 12:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I was too, didn't hear what others seemed to be hearing. Agalloch way too fucking low. I realize that album on the verge of being the metal world's 2010 Arcade Fire album (in that it shows up on every damn list), but it really really is that amazing. Had to drive in to work last night for the first time in months, cranked it up really really loud for the commute home, and fell in love with it again.

yeah but deej you said pretty much the same thing about Youtube views & yet you are still using those stats to declare Gucci victorious over Arcade Fire

Ned Rag & the Evil Olive Gardens (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 30 December 2010 15:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I love deej's passion on this, but its pretty much not worth the time to argue with him. He's going to dismiss anything that doesn't back up his assertations that "gangster rap" is some criminally underrepresented genre that billions of teenagers are listening to.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 30 December 2010 15:05 (thirteen years ago) link

last.fm's user base is a lot more self-selecting than youtube's, which pretty much is composed of everybody with internet access.

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 15:09 (thirteen years ago) link

fwiw youtube views seem equally unscientific to me
