Awesome -- I hope Michael Hann votes in Pazz & Jop! (I've never heard of him before -- does he post on ILX? If not, now I'm starting to wonder just how far and wide Myonga's Seger collection has been distributed in the past year.) I think he overstates the extent to which Seger was musically "conservative" (whatever that even means at this point), and maybe the extent to which punks rejected him any more than Petty or Springsteen (though I say that from a Detroit vantage point, of course, and Hann does go on to mention the Eddie & the Hot Rods and Thin Lizzy covers in the comments section.) I also had no idea that Face The Promise (for which I actually interviewed Seger for Billboard) sold enough to go platinum, either; but according to Wiki, at least, Hann's right.

I mean, "Old Time Rock N Roll" has a musically conservative message by definition, I guess, but "Looking Back" is expressly a song about how nostalgia's not a good thing.

OK, for completists' sake, I've uploaded a few more files, just to get those remaining Hideout recordings up there for whoever wants 'em. "Very Few" is a very uncharacteristic ballad but I like it OK. "Florida Time" features Seger on backing vocals only. "East Side Sound" is just "East Side Story"'s backing track with some indifferent lead guitar in place of vocals. And "Heavy Music Part III" is just something I made up myself for the hell of it, a stereo track consisting of Part 1 in one channel and Part 2 in the other.

And wrt the "album cover", here's my own attempt:

I know, it's pretty sloppy, garish and not too imaginative. But I'm in love with that assortment of record labels.

That's actually fairly decent. Take it on a cd down to the local FedEx office story and have it printed out on photo paper in postcard size. It'll look great, I can pretty much guarantee it, particularly if you can redo the parts as .bmp composite. That will have greater fidelity and resolution.

111st Place in Pazz & Jop from just five ballots (points-per-ballot average: 21), not bad!

Er -- 111th, I meant.

Never would've guessed Tal would be one of those voters.

Pink Friday XIII (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 01:30 (thirteen years ago) link

J, you would have guessed it if I'd written anywhere about it, but I haven't yet. I pitched it to a couple places this year, but apparently no one was interested in a compilation confirming that Bob Seger's early work is some of the greatest rock music ever committed to tape. Their loss. I'm glad that guy from The Guardian wrote something, but I'd still like to see an epic early-Seger piece that somehow gets Bob's attention and lets him give the reins over to Myonga to release this excellent, excellent album.

Hi guy, I saw the #111 placement of "Never Mind the Bullets Here's Early Bob Seger" which led me here via Google. Sounds like a greeat comp. Nothing off "Brand New Morning" though? Not even "Louise"?

Anyway, I thought you guys might get a kick out of this thing I put together last year, "101 Reasons This Is the Greatest Rock and Roll Photo Ever," at least partially inspired by Darnielle's old ilxor thread about "Ignition (remix)." Seger fans need to at least check out the photo: http://www.gloriousnoise.com/articles/2010/bob_seger_system_photo.php

Alas, I don't own that one in any format. (Never heard it either)

Would it be possible to get a link for this comp (or a copy of it--will trade, pay postage etc.). Thanks.

Can't switch from NFL channel postagame until I see Rodgers 1 on 1 lol

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 24 January 2011 04:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Is there a tracklist somewhere that lists the sources for these tracks? I'm pretty unfamiliar with these songs and I'd like to see what original albums/singles they were from. I dled the sendspace file, but only some of the track tags are filled out.

Thanks Myonga.

Saw Seger live in '66! hahahahah Real Talk

Don Buddin, Monday, 24 January 2011 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Good lord. How was the show?

Mark, Monday, 24 January 2011 05:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Not really "a show." Bar in Columbus, ripped. With the Last Heard. East Side Story was the jam, pre-Heavy Music. Did three sets as they were a "bar band" at the time. Lots of great covers, Ramblin, Gamblin Man was just a gleam in his eye at the time.

Don Buddin, Monday, 24 January 2011 05:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow!

xpost - Yeah, I was pretty lazy with the tags. Here's a fairly definitive breakdown:

"East Side Story", "Persecution Smith", "Heavy Music", "Chain Smokin'", "Sock It To Me Santa", "Vagrant Winter" - 1966-67 singles (Bob Seger & The Last Heard)

"Ballad of the Yellow Berets" - 1967 single credited to The Beach Bums

"Ramblin' Gamblin' Man", "Tales of Lucy Blue", "Down Home", "2+2=?" from Ramblin' Gamblin' Man LP (The Bob Seger System, 1969)

"Noah", "Innvervenus Eyes", "Lonely Man", "Death Row" from Noah LP (The Bob Seger System, 1969)

"Highway Child", "Mongrel", "Lucifer", "Leanin' On My Dream" from Mongrel LP (The Bob Seger System, 1970)

"Lookin' Back" - 1971 single

"Love The One You're With" from Smokin' O.P.'s LP, 1972

"Rosalie", "Back In '72", "I've Been Working" from Back In '72 LP, 1973

"Get Out of Denver", "Cross of Gold", "U.M.C." from Seven LP, 1974

Yeah, "wow" I'm fkin OLD. hahahaha I followed him through most of his arena arc too, til about 77 or so. Even that schmaltz was good too at first.

Now I got nothing bad to say about the guy but I don't listen to much that came after the stuff you've posted here.

He plays piano on Kid Rock's new LP. The sound of dismay.

Ever heard The Bob Seger Liberation Army? Purty good.

Thanks again.

Actually, it's The Seger Liberation Army.

If I remember tomorrow, I put all these in chron order with the correct band names and added Tyler's artwork from above, I will try and upload that too.

Mark, Monday, 24 January 2011 06:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks Myonga, I really appreciate that breakdown! I'm kind of anal when it comes to my tags and wanted to make sure I credited them to the correct artist. Again, really appreciate your work on all this. Growing up my mom was a huge Seger fan, but of course the Silver Bullets era mega-popular stuff, so I'm diving into this side of his work for the first time. Glad I gave it a go!

oh shit, i forgot i was going to scan this seger photo i've come into possession of. i'll do it i swear. cover art myonga has is nice, the pic will be a good supplement. not sure of the year, but it is early. and classic.

Looks like Myonga's work is getting out into the wider world.

For some reason, Never Mind The Bullets has risen to 93rd.

Frank Kogan, Friday, 28 January 2011 05:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay just listened to this twice today and, holy fuck, what a revelation. Thank you so much for putting this together Myonga. I will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for some of this stuff on vinyl. I know I've passed up a couple in the past, dismissing Seger as nothing I'd care for.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 28 January 2011 05:06 (thirteen years ago) link

xp Yep, Frank. From the Pazz & Jop thread, yesterday:

When I looked at the album list a couple days ago, the Bob Seger bootleg was up to #93! But then I noticed how that happened: Placements (on both lists, I think) had been altered to acknowledge ties, but instead of say, two albums tied for #32 followed by an album at #34 (which would be the proper way to do it), they're now followed by an album at #33. And so on, increasingly, down the chart..

xhuxk, Friday, 28 January 2011 05:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I just figured that out too (was looking at the singles list and was wondering why several hundred were tied for 40th place, and then noticed what you noticed) (wouldn't be surprised if the Voice has fewer people on its technical staff than several years ago).

Frank Kogan, Friday, 28 January 2011 06:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Have actually listened to Brand New Morning, which according to Wikip is a gem, and according to Seger (according to Wikip) is buried in his backyard, presumably so as to prevent it from ever seeing the light again. I think Seger's policy is correct and the gem person is wrong. "Louise" might have been passable if there'd been a band accompanying Seger and he'd worked on the vocals. But there are plenty of better tracks from other early albums that also didn't make it onto Never Mind The Bullets (my favorite of these being "Long Song Comin'" from Seven).

What is wrong about looking back on the good things from the past? It's not like everything was better in the past, but some things were, and looking back on them is good, not least because the future can learn from it.

Okay what's the story behind that photo.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 30 January 2011 18:38 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't really know! a friend knows a photographer who used to take concert pics in the 70s, and he just had a stack full of these things. for some reason (even tho he didn't know about myonga's comp) my friend sent me this one. don't know where/when it was taken. but i've spent a lot of time looking at this photo. i think it means ... something.

tylerw, Sunday, 30 January 2011 20:15 (thirteen years ago) link

haha look it's Boots Riley from The Coup in his time travel machine, jammin' with Bob.

sleeve, Monday, 31 January 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

also of note to this thread, I got a copy of Smokin' O.P.'s at the record show yesterday and during our afterparty put on "Heavy Music" as an invisible jukebox, the guests' closest guess was Ike Turner!

sleeve, Monday, 31 January 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago) link

anyone have any guesses on the date of that photo? judging from the foxy lady in the foreground, it's gotta be early 70s right?

tylerw, Monday, 31 January 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Seems about right judging by the muttonchops on the guy in the back with the crazed look on his face.
