they were turfed out, the landlord spent coupla thousand repairing damage, someone's mum had a word with landlord's wife, hey fuckin presto.

No noise past 11pm, tbf, but several hours per day of beats that necessitate raised voices for conversation in our living room is really startin to take a toll.

burn yourself a nice Merzbow/Whitehouse/Diamanda Galas comp, place your speakers next to the shared wall, let it rip and fuck off out for a couple of hours.

speakers? You overestimate my equipment budget.

Also, a war of attrition here is weighted heavily towards the subhumans that already evince tolerance for 200+dB barrage for prolonged periods.

I rly think that there will have to be cunting done, but it's the brother that's the family expert in that

people who tolerate their own shit at high volume are often quite put out at stuff they don't dig tho. but cunting might well be a good solution.

if you burn their place down is it likely to spread to yours?

is the rental market so bad that landlords will accept a load of delinquent retards as tenants?

eh, yeah. And um it's not something i particularly want to risk happening again this decade tbf.

My parent's house has 2 budgies who are squawking all day, but eventually you get used to them and come to especially appreciate them in the morning where they like to sing little songs as the sun rises.

D, surely if the rental market is so bad someone is willing to put up with these goons, then you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a new place? are there circumstances which totally prevent you from moving?

Lol. Nice description.. My old neighbour only had one CD, a Johnny Cash one. She played it loud whenever she had a row with her boyf and then constantly for days when they split. But, y'know.. it's a bit of give and take..

mmmm, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

My current right-side neighb (we live in little standalone row house cottages but theyre barely 5 feet apart) sometimes kvetches at me that he cna hear thumping bass, which I maintain baffles me as I dont often listen to any music and when I do, I dont know how the sound'd carry from the other side of the house thru brick walls. Anyway I did what I could to mitigate it - turned down the bass EQ, hoiked the speakers up onto books.

Then he has some kind of family over with 2 or 3 little kids, who proceeded to spend quite a few days continually running up and down their wooden floored hallway. Thudthudthudthudthud, from 7 in the morning, like they were running a marathon.

I resisted the temptation to go over and bitch him out but only barely.

three months pass...

just had a big doorstop row with an elderly east end battle axe from the adjacent flat. last night for about an hour or so there was a baby absolutely roaring in the room adjacent to my bedroom, i mean full on howling, obv teething or something. plus talking noises etc. after about 45 mins i banged the wall a bit, because imo take the baby to a room that doesn't border other people's. i can totally understand a crying baby can't be switched off or whatever. anyway the woman was angry this morning and said i should call the police or the council if i have a problem, my view is that a few bangs of the wall seems a far smaller and more frequently occurring step for this than calling the police or the council. she also was banging on a bit in that "he's a great kid how dare you way" and i had to be all "yes never heard a wink out of him before, he'll be pm one day." she was fairly aggressive but i kept it as calm as possible, attempted to end on resolution/handshake etc.

what do you all think? i feel a little bit bad but then i also feel if a child is screaming that badly it's not as though it's not in someone's arms anyway. we reached an impasse of "next time you should call the police, don't bang on the wall" vs my "if you brought the child to centre room in the house in the rare event it's crying that loudly, no neighbours would hear it."

i need to learn morse code.

LocalGarda, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 07:14 (twelve years ago) link

btw obv with the night that was in it in london last night it's nice that people can be kept awake by a teething baby

LocalGarda, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 07:16 (twelve years ago) link

you're pretty much in the right -- if she doesn't at least agree to keep the baby away from your room then she's probably just a huge asshole

i'm a bit ignorant as to how things work over there but calling the police seems a bit drastic giving the circumstances? you should be able to take it up w/ your landlord (or equivalent)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 August 2011 07:19 (twelve years ago) link

it's different landlords cos a separate flat, just where bedroom walls border noise can spill through. yeah imo calling the police is fucking mental, maybe the council but overall i find the reaction to "wall banging", a fairly annoying but informal and common way of your neighbour saying "hey there i can hear you" to be very odd. she was saying "you scared the child's mother" and it's like...so i should call the police? or call around myself at 2am? i don't think it's an intimidating block, i'm one of the least scary people here and i wouldn't be scared if someone bopped the wall a few times.

Sent the muscle over on wed eve to explain that their kitchen is a wafer away from our bedroom, we're up at 7, apt rules say no noise after 11pm, etc, all taken in good grace. Their kid, who apparently doesnt ever have to go to bed, has kept us awake til three every night since and right now they seem to just be hurling dishes at the shared wall in the midst of preparing a full fuckin banquet.

Its 1.22am what the fuck is wrong with these ppl

people have no idea how loud they are, especially if they grew up in a house and then moved to an apartment. the students across the street from me have interminable conversations on their staircase at 3:30am on weeknights in their donkey foghorn voices and get all pissy when I (and the rest of the neighbors) call the cops on them. I know they get pissy because I can hear them whining to the cops "but we're just taaaaaaaaaalking it's not a party."

one month passes...

adjacent neighbours and their kid have gone miraculously quiet this week, hopefully a letter arrived from management co as promised

otoh

immediately after lj sickburned me about drinking from a bottle with a signature on it last night my upstairs neighbour put on his washing machine at 3am for the fourth or fifth time in a fortnight so i went and got bob dylan's chronicles and my big foxford robe and said bottle and went out into the hall up the stairway and lay full length across it so's he'd have to fuckin vault me in case i fell asleep and lay there and drank whiskey and read like that until he exited his flat on his way to work about an hour later and we had the following conversation, my good self opening:

"howaya"

"hi"

"you're, ah, you're up there in number 8". wave towards the door he's just exited, think about moving into a seated position but am comfy.

warily "yeah"

"your, ah, your washing machine, it's on"

warily "yeah. i think so. i'd need to check with my wife."

slug from bottle. "no, god no, don't bother her at this time of the morning. it's on the roof of my bedroom, i can confirm that it's on"

"yeah. yeah, it must be so"

"...must be so. must be so. ah. indeed." another big slug from the bottle. "any chance, any chance of it not going on during the night anymore?"

"yeah. sorry. yeah. of course. i'd need to check with the wife."

business concluded, i get up and shamble off to bed.

idgi. on any number of levels, idgi. but i particularly dg the existence of this tyrannous spouse that is either herself or is by proxy forcing this guy to wash his clothes at 3am. it seems very sinister, and indeed upon mention of her at each juncture during the encounter his lips drew back pale and waxy and a light of anxiety flickered in the depths of his eyes.

what strange lives people lead behind their front doors.
