it's ok -- I can imagine his Hollywood smile and him turning tricks for me.

I can see why he did Green Zone, even though the script was a giant misfire in every way - he wanted to do another movie w/Greengrass that had some of that bourne juice w/o doing another sequel, was a chance to tackle ~important issues of the day~

xp I was gonna say earlier that it would've been great to see him do a FUN Ripley movie.

yeah he's wonderful in TG, tho in retrospect I think he was doing his McConaughey impression the whole time

He was perfectly cast in True Grit, his comedy skills showed off pretty well (LOVE that scene where he flashes Mattie his US Marshall badge with that look like UH HUH GET A LOAD OF THIS, so tongue in cheek but playing it totally straight.)

Loved all of the Bourne movies, Good Will Hunting, Mr Ripley, Good Shepherd...really love him in 30 Rock, and his stuff on Entourage was hilarious. I think he's hottest when he's being funny.

Hereafter looked so dire not even Damon could get me to watch that one.

i think this dude is great btw. probably the most consistent hwood star of the 00s in terms of quality of projects. way more staying power than affleck though i admire how both of them have carved out semi-weird little niches for themselves

max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:51 (thirteen years ago) link

re ben affleck, i hadn't seen him in anything until the town, and was tryna remember what he looked like the next day but kept thinking of adam sandler

damon i guess is more identifiable than that

the 2000s: most consistent actor/actor with the best choice in projects

nommed damon in this thread

max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm hoping he becomes like Paul Newman in the seventies and eighties: less to prove, so he walks into any old project and blows everyone off screen.

he was the only good thing about invictus tbh

max, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 03:02 (thirteen years ago) link

simmons actually made a good point about Invictus - mandela spent too much time in the foreground, it wasn't the rugby team's story so you couldn't get involved in the actual drama of the game, plus the whole thing was just lame and crappy

ೋ*¨*ೋALWAYz A F4RT3R ♥ 24/7/365ೋ*¨*ೋ (Princess TamTam), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 03:04 (thirteen years ago) link

sure he's a nice person and all but this thread is just o_O to me

zvookster, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 03:05 (thirteen years ago) link

He's not quite as consistent as advertised (he added nothing to Hereafter), but I'll take his acting over Affleck's directing.

There was absolutely no call for him to get that nod for Invictus unless they just wanted to award him for having the biggest pecs he's ever had in his career, but he should definitely get one for True Grit.

Yeah, this was my point upthread. It's so easy for him to slip into stolid mode.

Beyond the roles he picks, he's been very good at balancing being a star and being anonymous, and it benefits his work. See Affleck and Damon as opposites of how to manage an emerging career.

beyond the departed, i like him a lot. good comedy chops, great in bourne action roles, can do likeable or not,

Ben Affleck: Hey look, I'm sorry I dragged you away from whatever-gay-serial-killers-who-ride-horses-and-like-to-play-golf-touchy-feely-picture you're supposed to be doing this week.
Matt Damon: I take it you haven't seen Forces of Nature?
Ben Affleck: You're like a child. What've I been telling you? You gotta do the safe picture. Then you can do the art picture. But then sometimes you gotta do the payback picture because your friend says you owe him.
[They both take a beat and look at the camera]
Ben Affleck: And sometimes, you have to go back to the well.
Matt Damon: And sometimes, you do Reindeer Games.
Ben Affleck: See, that's just mean.

like I am a fucking masochist who reads the local education news stories and every comment is like WELL IF THESE PARENTS WOULD JUST DO THEIR JOB or IF THESE LAZY TEACHERS blah blah it's like, is there an area of policy which so many ppl believe there is only one easily identified problem and it's out of sheer malicious negligence that it doesn't get fixed?

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 10 April 2023 20:34 (one year ago) link

I re-watched Elysium two nights ago having not seen it since it was new. Angry, ripped working-class goon Damon in a really gritty (like, you can almost smell it) sci-fi story of class warfare. The ending falls apart, but he's good throughout and Jodie Foster is a very good villain.
