:)

why the steak tho

Rockcrit from the Tuoms (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 22:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Because the larvae in the cheese can launch themselves for distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in) when disturbed,[1][7] diners hold their hands above the sandwich to prevent the maggots from leaping. Those who do not wish to eat live maggots place the cheese in a sealed paper bag. The maggots, starved for oxygen, writhe and jump in the bag, creating a "pitter-patter" sound. When the sounds subside, the maggots are dead and the cheese can be eaten.[8]

OK THE MAGGOTS LEAP

I'm fine with adventurous foods to an extent too but that is just wrong in every possible way. Sorry Sardinia.

xp Most people's reaction is "urgh disease, burn it with cleansing fire!", but maybe your reaction is "hey, disease happening to someone else instead of me!"?

Anyway, after about a month of working there, I developed all these little round holes in the skin on the bottom of my feet. I was pretty freaked out – I thought maybe it was leprosy or something. I had no fucking idea. My doctor said that my sweat was eroding the skin on my feet and maybe I should look into purchasing some better-ventilated footwear.

dayo, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 02:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Although not truly trypophobia related, that reminds me of this one time I was riding my bike down a trail and came across this groundhog corpse with a huge chuck of flesh taken out of its back. The hole was writhing with maggots. I grabbed a couple sticks to move the body off the trail, but when I got close, the groundhog popped up and ran away!

wait is this about fear of holes (as google informs me trypophobia is) or just really porous stuff?

― EDB, Tuesday, December 28, 2010 11:07 PM (Yesterday)

google tells me it's "the irrational fear of clusters of holes, pods, circles, cracks, cuts, and other asymmetrical shapes especially those found in nature," so there ya go.

it's not a medically recognized phobia though. most likely it's a dedicated troll trying to start an internet meme. someone's been creating Wikipedia entries about it since 2005, but they keep getting deleted. in the words of some Wiki dudes:

Wikipedia is not for things made up one day. See http://www.geocities.com/holephobia/trypophobia.html for someone purporting to have invented this name in 2005. No evidence in Google Scholar for any actual phobia known by this term.

---

Delete. Likely hoax and borderline patent nonsense: "Trypophobia is a serious fear of hole, which results in an all-over itchy feeling and general uneasyness." Google search seems to indicate a pattern of trolling: petitions to dictionaries to include the word, posts to answers.yahoo.com, attempts to insert the word (together with shock site images) in the World of Warcraft forums.

elsewhere on the internet are trypophobia.com, an ilxor.com thread by someone named "Jesse", and this surprisingly active facebook group, led by a certain M@sai Andr3ws, where people are like "omg I've been scared of Suriname toads and wasps' nests for as long as I can remember, finally I have a word for it!"

If you all really want to freak yourselves out then try GISing 'smallpox'. Will make you glad that shit has been eradicated.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 11:04 (thirteen years ago) link

It should be a real phobia though because lord knows I certainly have it. Only this part though: the irrational fear of clusters of holes, pods, circles . . . found in nature.

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 12:05 (thirteen years ago) link

while on the train back home today I thought about grady's painting of the boy cutting off the lotus pods, and my right arm has felt tingly for the past hour or so

dayo, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 12:07 (thirteen years ago) link

smallpox seems not as bad because they are bumps and not holes, and plus you can't get it anymore, whereas that pitted K thing up there, you can get that from just wearing boots in the winter, fukk

Yeah, that was seriously one of the worst things I've ever seen. I would send that to a friend who shares this issue but I think she'd puke on the spot.

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 12:10 (thirteen years ago) link

trypophilia

Yeah, most of these are pretty neat to me (didn't mind the arm-pods either), but I can't join the trypophiles because the one or two pics with squishy goopy stuff visibly oozing beneath/through holes were as shiver-inducingly horrible to me as I guess all the others are to the real phobics. Brr.
