Whoah that is really interesting. Wouldn't a good soak and pumice take care of that for you, too, though? Seems like a combo of "no ventilation" but also "can't be arsed to take care of self" issue, at least in normal non-tropical jungle circs that also do not involve perpetually flooded trenches of any kind.

some years ago, i knew (by association) a guy who was terrified of acne, because his mother had told him that pimples were caused by and contained parasitic worms. he was pretty seriously crazy. he also thought phone poles were radioactive due to secret chemicals used in creosote manufacturing.

My mother thought that ringworm was an actual WORM, and not a fungus or whatever it actually is. So when she got on her breastbone from hugging some kid in her elementary class who had it on his or her head, she was practically ready to vomit and/or scratch her skin off in panic and grossness until I thought to look it up.
