yeah i'm pretty much in agreement with the above. the album sounds great but most of it doesn't stick with me as much as the singles/EP

I really like them.
― ENBB, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 00:08 (thirteen years ago) link
Saw them the other week - very weak performance, absolutely no enthusiasm (& yeah I realize the dream/shoegaze-esque formatting, but come on and tap your foot at the least). Love their last album's artwork tho, really one of my favorites from that year.
― kelpolaris, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 00:48 (thirteen years ago) link
That "performance" sounds perfect!
― Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 00:58 (thirteen years ago) link
ha, well i was pretty conscious of the archetypal shoegazer provisions for a "concert" but these guys have just far too melodic working material to just stand around and insist "this is all about the music, man". i GET IT with mbv and such, but in their cases it really was both essential to their methods and allure, whereas these dudes i felt where just doing it because they knew their predecessors did. slowdive/ride/swirlies did plenty of rocking out on stage, and had as equally mellow songs.
― kelpolaris, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 03:03 (thirteen years ago) link
Swirlies didn't go nuts when I saw them, but I was distracted by the amazing songs so my memory is fuzzy.
― Wacky Way Lounge (Evan), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 03:14 (thirteen years ago) link
The ep is marvellous - I played the LP a lot but it pales next to Golden Haze.
agreed. The EP is just fucking awesome. Love the LP too.
I saw them recently and really liked it, my only complaint was that several songs were cut in half! (stopped verses short of the end for some reason - every song was like 1:45 long, weird)

Holy shit.
Has anyone heard "A Dancing Shell"? New EP comes out tomorrow.
Un-fucking-believable. I almost thought it was the wrong band. What does it sound like to me? Scritti Politti, Human League, Pet Shop Boys, Simple Minds, AR Kane, Style Council, hints of acid house, and probably a lot of even more obvious stuff I'll talk with my therapist about when I get back next week.

these guys were surprisingly good when i saw them back in feb (in the hottest room ever). the sarah-isms come out way way more live than on record, oddly
― peel hat-trick narrows (electricsound), Monday, 13 May 2013 22:57 (ten years ago) link
Saw them last fall, like Sept or Oct and completely disagree. Their llive set emphasized the simultaneous muscularity of the sound and boredom of the vocals. Sarah/c86 I associate with thin production.. This sound was big.

Hard times .
― fields of salmon, Monday, 13 May 2013 23:52 (ten years ago) link
it had very little to do with the bigness or otherwise of the sound. melodically and instrumentally there was a lot of the wake in what they were doing, orchids too
― peel hat-trick narrows (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 00:03 (ten years ago) link
Yes, there's a big influence, but what I'm saying is that they're doing something much bigger and more important. And when they play live it's more modern than that thin sounding indie.

Wow, I was getting pretty hammered last night.
Anyway, just woke up to the full EP. This is a record that confounds and delights. It's got a lot to do with Bowie also, I think it sounds like Low.
Trying to arrange a 12" copy from my local record shop but the guy hasn't got back to me yet.
― fields of salmon, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 13:17 (ten years ago) link
This guy has clearly lost his fucking mind. There's one song on here that sounds like Blur.

― Evan, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 13:28 (ten years ago) link
None of them really address how different the music is on this EP. They kind of talk about Wild Nothing in a general way, but none of them really sit down and try to understand the rationale for the stylistic shift.
― fields of salmon, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 23:48 (ten years ago) link
Well, I guess "rationale" isn't the right word, but maybe "significance."
how would you characterize the shift? i'd be interested to hear...

Nope, I noticed it pretty much straight away. Same chord progression.
Anyways, I love this... but I loved Nocturne too, so...
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 25 May 2013 16:56 (ten years ago) link
From reading recent interviews, it would seem like Mr. Tatum wasn't personally happy with the way Nocturne turned out, hence why this new EP has a bit of a broader range to it. Apparently he feels like he 'tried too hard' with Nocturne and feels like it was a bit of a 'perfectionist' record and that it's 'missing something' for him. The new EP allegedly was conceived partly because he was sick to death of touring the Nocturne material. I'm sure all of you (like me) who voted for Nocturne in the 2012 EOY poll will be scratching their heads here!

i think nocturne is great and this recent ep is doing v little for me tbqh, i would almost venture that it's his weakest set of songs
― grange hermit crab (electricsound), Monday, 27 May 2013 22:19 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, I mean I can understand people's feelings regarding the new EP vs. Nocturne, and why fans of one may not take well to the other... I mean, Nocturne is very much a one-sound kind of record (although it's a great sound), and the new EP is more all over the place... I'm finding myself liking both releases a lot for different reasons. I kinda hope he experiments further on his next full-length, actually, which I think would be great if he could come up with songs that were up to snuff!
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 27 May 2013 22:25 (ten years ago) link
I'd say that 'Ride' and 'Data World' were my highlights of this new EP... really love those two.

New album is sort of meh, but the opening track has some great xylophone-sounding synths and this track is absolutely stunning:

When the mid 80s were over, I really missed the guitar sound in "Partners in Motion" (and in places on the Tornado Wallace album from last year) and I'm overjoyed it's finally okay to make a guitar sound like that again
This is probably why I am really feeling this new album

really enjoying this so far. it feels like he took lessons from Life Of Pause (which i wasn't super into and he, from interviews, doesn't sound like he quite was either) and just applies those sophistipop tendencies to his usual soundscapey popcraft.

The new one is basically Nocturne II, but the songwriting isn't anywhere near as consistent in terms of quality and while the production on Nocturne helped his vocals to blend in with the music unobtrusively, here I can't take my mind off the fact that Tatum is a weak singer.
