bei major is actually a working r&b dude -- was on the "ride" remix, has had some placements on high profile r&b albums this year

a lot of these dudes have other rap styles -- shorty mack is a wayne biter -- but it all feels like its a part of the same wiz/curren$y universe of non-gangster MOR rap

all the blog mentions of the new Redman/Ghostface/Sheek Louch albums are just "lol look at what Def Jam is rushing out in December with like 2 weeks notice and zero promo"

i've been happy that in the past few years (since la reid took over?) def jam has been willing to just cut their losses and put joints out even if there isn't any promo budget for them and they probably won't sell as opposed to back when they were infamous for sticking everyone in limbo for years at a time.

yeah it's definitely refreshing after the half decade logjam of some artists just sitting on the bench forever, but like even the cover art is starting to look especially slapped together on these albums

like there's seemingly nothing Def Jam is giving these artists (in terms of budget, exposure, quality control) that they probably couldn't get from E1 or even like fuckin Babygrande

i was never really a fan of plies's r&b stuff, so it's surprising to me that that's what he's mostly known for. this is p. much what he does best, hook-driven songs that try to be hood but end up a little ridiculous sounding. like really really really from da hood doe!!

well, Sheek Louch just signed to Def Jam this year, and 3 of Ghostftace's last 4 albums were dropped like this, quietly in December with minimum advance notice or singles, so unless he's under some kind of 20-album contract he's probably not totally stuck there or anything

the sheek louch album cover is HILARIOUS

it almost doesn't do it justice to see it on the mixtapedia thread because it's like wait...this is a real major label album

speaking of Def Jam's inept design department. there's an amazing "takeover" ad on some blogs right now promoting the new ghostface
