Oh... I would have voted for Arpanet (probably Quantum Transposition), but I didn't realize it was a Drexciya-related project.

What else sounds like Other People Place? i.e. Drexciya-like but more relaxed, I guess.

Just reading an RA rave review of the Warp Laptop Cafe re-issue inspired me to dig out some old Drexciya. Man, I don't think I've ever found a more perfect use of 4 minutes than Triangular Hydrogen Strain. I think Laptop Cafe is a beautiful album, but this poll gets it about right.

Of course Oxyplasmic Gyration Beam is alltime as well .. what an album Neptune's lair is.

bc it sounds less busy and complex. ‘aqua worm hole’ sounds harder to make than ‘its your love’. i can p much play the latter by ear and recognize most of the presets from the one summer ducking around w synth and drum machine, but i have no idea how to make many of the sounds on worm hole (not to mention other more bonkers drexciya songs i don’t rememb names of)

i take it from your incensed reaction that this was a controversial statement. seems obvious to me. maybe it’s really easy to program hectic drexciya style techno and i just don’t know the tricks

i remember let me be me coming on in the dancing one time when i was fully of eccy. very emotionally cathartic

calling out that bassline on "it's your love" bc, imo, it's one of the best ever

this album always struck me as maybe superficially simple but extremely well-written. even tho every track only has a few elements in the mix, every sound is v well-chosen and it all just locks in perfectly, like computer world or something. but i don't make techno so what do I know? I could be off on that.

easily my fave drexciya-related record too. I think I probably heard it first and found their records a little underwhelming in comparison but i'm over that now. but I've never really stopped going back to laptop cafe since it came out.

god lab rat xl is phenomenal

Co-sign on Arpanet's Wirelesss Internet, and would add Dopplereffekt's 'Linear Accelerator' to the list as a crucial album. That one goes beyond space.

I don't think I was ready for this one at the time (wanted more beats). it's high time to give it another go.

Oh I truly hope you do. The beats are in the second part of the album, but if all goes well you will be sucked into side A so completely, you won't be longing for beats any longer. 'Linear Accelerator' is a mirage, a dive deep into the sonic wormhole, a gift. It's a miracle of a record. I do not say this lightly.

"linear accelerator" came out months after james stinson (drexciya guy) died. i always liked to think of it as a concept album, in which gerald donald (dopplereffekt guy) tries to use quantum mechanics to summon up the ghost of james stinson.

Okay, I really don't know that much about Drexciyan history except a couple of articles I've read online, and the Resident Advisor mini-documentary, and I've never seen any breakdown of who did what on the Drexciya albums... Is there any good source for further information?

There's really not much reliable information on who wrote what but it's believed that Stinson and Donald were Drexciya. It's rumoured that there were a couple of other guys in Elecktroids and I think The Other People Place was a Stinson solo thing

The Elecktroids EP that was just reissued isn't great by the way. I picked up the Elecktroworld album and it's good but I was a bit underwhelmed tbh, not one of their best for me

LBI, that's exactly the mini-documentary I mentioned above, but it doesn't say anything about who made which records... And the Red Bull article you linked seems to confirm Drexciya was a duo effort right until Grava 4.

In that article, this bit about the Shifted Phases pretty interesting:

Stinson’s death in September 2002 hardly stemmed the tide: Appearing posthumously were another Transllusion album (2002’s L.I.F.E. on Rephlex), Lab Rat XL’s Mice Or Cyborg in 2003 via Clone and Shifted Phases’ The Cosmic Memoirs of the Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthorpe, also released in 2002 via Tresor. At least, the Shifted Phases album is widely believed to have been by Stinson. According to Stoiber, however, Donald gave Stinson the completed album as a wedding present, “so it’s a Gerald record.”

If Shifted Phases is indeed Donald and not Stinson, then that would certainly mean Donald was contributing to Drexciya records post-1995, because the last track on the Shifted Phases album is the same tune as "Song of the Green Whale" on Harnessed the Storm.

There was a great Wire piece by Kodwo Eshun that went deep into the mythos surrounding the various incarnations of Drexciya, playing heavily on Paul Gilroy's Black Atlantic.

Exhibition by Otolith Group that ties in directly with Drexciya , influenced by the mythos etc. & had talks by Kodo Eshun and Deforrest Brown last Saturday. Followed a while later by a dj set by Brown.

Has had me investigating the music of the band. I think I may have read the Kodwo Eshun piece way way back since I've been picking up Wire since the mid 90s.
Tresor seem to be running low on their supply of the reissue if the bandcamp page is anything to go by. May not be but is down to the single digits there. Am I think right that the 2 album length sets include the e,p as bonus tracks or as in one each.
Been listening to individual tracks on Spotify but may not be the best way to immerse myself.

After splitting with his long term girlfriend, and in a moment of weakness, my best mate purchased a physical copy of a pornographic magazine named “Panty Girl” from the local newsagents. Amusingly, there was a review of Drexciya’s Neptune’s Lair in the small music section, which just seemed rather incongruous.

It was a very positive review though.
