On Saturday - driving up to Newcastle - I finally got into Rhinohead - took me a while though.

I love the cover art. It makes me think of the decor in a crap 70s hairdressers. In a parallel universe where MES and Mouse on Mars were hair product models.

I think one of the Mouse On Mars guys is from a town called Suden or Sudenfeld and MES though of Sudafed and there you go.

I propose we add Section 25's new album to this Mancunian 2007 game. Whereas I just can't quite get really interested in the new Happy Mondays, the new Section 25 is pretty damn good.

But Von Sudenfed trumps all, I think.

It is really nice but has a bit of filler. For this decade's output from MES I've been dropping about half the tracks from each album to wind up with a much stronger set of songs. From VS I chose:

This sucker has been sitting underneath a pile of my CD's and I only recently uncovered it.

Who are XX Teens (they're supporting)? I'm semi-tempted to go to this, I could get there in 45 mins...

XX Teens were awful. And Von Sudenfed were a shambles! Maybe they jsut hadn't rehearsed at all. MoM were playing very different, remixed verions of most of the tracks, which unfortunately seemed to result in MES never being sure which song he was meant to be singing! He spent the first chunk of the show with his back to us, shuffling through (and regularly dropping) a huge pile of lyric sheets, and mumbling and/or shouting various lines from various songs. About halfway through he muttered something about not being able to stand being on stage, and wandered off into the wings, where he stayed for a song and a half (although he still sang occasional lines from there). Then the track (whichever it was, I couldn't keep up either) ended and he said the only really intelligible thing he said all night: "no trumpinnnnnnnng....no fartinnnnnnnng....it's london!".

And things just got weirder from there on. He carried on wandering on and off stage. He'd occasionally go around behind MoM's dask and reach over to petulantly twiddle a knob or two. He gave his mic to a guy on the front row (who admirably carried on ranting into it for the next few minutes) while he did another vanishing act. It was all round one of the strangest shows I've ever seen. And I said to Tom as we were leaving that if I'd never seen The Fall before, I'd probably just assume that's what he was always like. But I have, many times, and he's always been great before!

I guess he was still great though, in a way. I'm definitely glad I was there to see it.

(Oh, and the other support band were FANTASTIC! Chrome Hoof. My new favourites).

MoM themselves were pretty awesome. V loud - almost too loud. V hardcore - almost too hardcore. Verging on noise at some points. Maybe I'm gettin old.

I went in the end. Agree with above - MoM were awesome, MES was all over the place. Seemed to have microphone problems as well as the not knowing which song he was supposed to be mumbling over.

I thought the XX Teens were OK, assuming they were the band that was playing when I arrived. And the DJ between them and Von Sudenfed was playing cool stuff.

Is it just the two MoM guys, or do they have someone drumming? I think I'd really like seeing just the two of them on tour, MES or not.

Alarming how many Fall fans I've talked to who have never heard this! Like two. But that's two too many.

Was listening to this yesterday as well! Marvellous album, so much fun and invention. Had a fluhdid the club moment on the train home. Periodically suggestions rise that they'll do another one surface, but I'm not sure Smith will consider it unless he's strapped for cash.

If he was strapped for cash, he'd make another fall album, surely?

Not sure about that to be honest. I think a lot of the collaborative stuff, and indeed Fall repackaging stuff, as well as more or less constant touring, is partly driven by this (speculation on my part, but fairly strongly felt). The MoM collaboration was both high-profile and successful and MoM have said they'd be happy to work with him again.

MoM are incredibly good live. Von Sud live would be great, did they tour this?

I've been waiting for Mouse on Mars to come back to the states again for, like, 7 years. At this point they are the band I most want to see live right now. Well, "at this point" has pretty much been the past 7 years.

I saw them perform with it twice, the first at.. Fabric was it? which was good (v good Fledermaus Can't Get It). And Heaven, which was absolutely fantastic. Extremely memorable. Even the security stewards were grinning at one point. There are recordings I believe.

Was that the one were he kept on distractedly wandering off the stage? And it was also insanely loud? It was an experience, certainly.

Hmmm, he did go off stage a bit, but I guess I'm used to that (he often likes to sing behind the amps I think). We're probably talking about the same one, as the Fabric one was rather less chaotic iirc.
