Fucking hell, that video is the most Classickest thing I've seen all year.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah I want every single person who likes the manufactured freaking idiot pop diva shite that passes for music nowadays to watch that video. They're making fun of the whole ridiculous media farce!

wanko ergo sum, Sunday, 8 July 2007 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, that guy's voice was really annoying.

Bimble, Sunday, 8 July 2007 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link

On Saturday - driving up to Newcastle - I finally got into Rhinohead - took me a while though.

I love the cover art. It makes me think of the decor in a crap 70s hairdressers. In a parallel universe where MES and Mouse on Mars were hair product models.

mrlynch, Monday, 9 July 2007 03:26 (sixteen years ago) link

this is pretty rad.

the second MoM on the cover looks uncannily like an ex of mine.

get bent, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

God, I've been reading this as "Von Sudafed" since the beginning, and am hugely disappointed to discover my error.

dlp9001, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I've been reading this as "Von Sudafed" since the beginning

The similarity is intentional.

Suden = South in German... does Suden + Fed add up to some kind of pun? Southern ____?

Jon Lewis, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:52 (sixteen years ago) link

fed

s1ocki, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:53 (sixteen years ago) link

'südenfeld' means southern field... if theres a pun there, i dont get it

, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:59 (sixteen years ago) link

I think one of the Mouse On Mars guys is from a town called Suden or Sudenfeld and MES though of Sudafed and there you go.

The Suden Will Rise Again

Jon Lewis, Monday, 9 July 2007 21:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Loving Von Südenfed right now, this stuff slays. Particularly the track "That Sound Wiped", take a second listen if you didn't get into it right away. Marky Smith is godhead.

Wrinklepaws, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:10 (sixteen years ago) link

That song is very extremely good.

You don't look like no goddamned singer-songwriter to me

Can't MES forget about his squad rotation system and draft the MoM boys as the latest version of The Fall for a few more albums-uh?

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:43 (sixteen years ago) link

That or have MES join MoM. Or forget both and go under the Von Sudenfed banner forever. Because it's FUCKING WUNDERBAR.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 15:03 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, just check th monday's promo, and it sounds like crap beer ad music

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 15:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Both are aged Mancunians babbling over 'dance' 'music'.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I propose we add Section 25's new album to this Mancunian 2007 game. Whereas I just can't quite get really interested in the new Happy Mondays, the new Section 25 is pretty damn good.

But Von Sudenfed trumps all, I think.

Bimble, Monday, 16 July 2007 00:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Although...maybe Grimly Fiendish will get on me for this. Section 25 are actually from Blackpool. Sorry.

In any case "I am the DJ tonight".

Bimble, Monday, 16 July 2007 00:19 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Not a bad candidate for album of the year. I salute Mr. M.E.S.

Bimble, Saturday, 4 August 2007 08:40 (sixteen years ago) link

It is really nice but has a bit of filler. For this decade's output from MES I've been dropping about half the tracks from each album to wind up with a much stronger set of songs. From VS I chose:
Fledermaus
Rhinohead
Family Fued
Duckrog
Chicken Yaiamas
That Sound Wiped
Dearest Friends

Am going to see them at Heaven tonight! With ledge. Can't wait. Anyone else going to be there? Just got an email from EYOE trying to offload cheap tickets, so it clearly hasn't sold out.

Who are XX Teens (they're supporting)? I'm semi-tempted to go to this, I could get there in 45 mins...

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 18 October 2007 18:35 (sixteen years ago) link

XX Teens were awful. And Von Sudenfed were a shambles! Maybe they jsut hadn't rehearsed at all. MoM were playing very different, remixed verions of most of the tracks, which unfortunately seemed to result in MES never being sure which song he was meant to be singing! He spent the first chunk of the show with his back to us, shuffling through (and regularly dropping) a huge pile of lyric sheets, and mumbling and/or shouting various lines from various songs. About halfway through he muttered something about not being able to stand being on stage, and wandered off into the wings, where he stayed for a song and a half (although he still sang occasional lines from there). Then the track (whichever it was, I couldn't keep up either) ended and he said the only really intelligible thing he said all night: "no trumpinnnnnnnng....no fartinnnnnnnng....it's london!".

And things just got weirder from there on. He carried on wandering on and off stage. He'd occasionally go around behind MoM's dask and reach over to petulantly twiddle a knob or two. He gave his mic to a guy on the front row (who admirably carried on ranting into it for the next few minutes) while he did another vanishing act. It was all round one of the strangest shows I've ever seen. And I said to Tom as we were leaving that if I'd never seen The Fall before, I'd probably just assume that's what he was always like. But I have, many times, and he's always been great before!

I guess he was still great though, in a way. I'm definitely glad I was there to see it.

(Oh, and the other support band were FANTASTIC! Chrome Hoof. My new favourites).

JimD, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:47 (sixteen years ago) link

MoM themselves were pretty awesome. V loud - almost too loud. V hardcore - almost too hardcore. Verging on noise at some points. Maybe I'm gettin old.

ledge, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I went in the end. Agree with above - MoM were awesome, MES was all over the place. Seemed to have microphone problems as well as the not knowing which song he was supposed to be mumbling over.

I thought the XX Teens were OK, assuming they were the band that was playing when I arrived. And the DJ between them and Von Sudenfed was playing cool stuff.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 19 October 2007 13:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Is it just the two MoM guys, or do they have someone drumming? I think I'd really like seeing just the two of them on tour, MES or not.

mh, Friday, 19 October 2007 14:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Great gig report, JimD!

I really recognise the "he sucks, but he's great!" from trying to explain MES to other people who never heard of him.

Alarming how many Fall fans I've talked to who have never heard this! Like two. But that's two too many.

Slade Venom Secret Police (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 3 February 2011 06:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Was listening to this yesterday as well! Marvellous album, so much fun and invention. Had a fluhdid the club moment on the train home. Periodically suggestions rise that they'll do another one surface, but I'm not sure Smith will consider it unless he's strapped for cash.

Herr Kapitan Pugvosh (GamalielRatsey), Thursday, 3 February 2011 07:59 (thirteen years ago) link

If he was strapped for cash, he'd make another fall album, surely?

Mark G, Thursday, 3 February 2011 11:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Not sure about that to be honest. I think a lot of the collaborative stuff, and indeed Fall repackaging stuff, as well as more or less constant touring, is partly driven by this (speculation on my part, but fairly strongly felt). The MoM collaboration was both high-profile and successful and MoM have said they'd be happy to work with him again.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 26 June 2011 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

MoM are incredibly good live. Von Sud live would be great, did they tour this?

mmmm, Sunday, 26 June 2011 21:10 (twelve years ago) link

I've been waiting for Mouse on Mars to come back to the states again for, like, 7 years. At this point they are the band I most want to see live right now. Well, "at this point" has pretty much been the past 7 years.

brie on crüt (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 27 June 2011 00:39 (twelve years ago) link

Von Sud live would be great, did they tour this?

I saw them perform with it twice, the first at.. Fabric was it? which was good (v good Fledermaus Can't Get It). And Heaven, which was absolutely fantastic. Extremely memorable. Even the security stewards were grinning at one point. There are recordings I believe.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Monday, 27 June 2011 09:23 (twelve years ago) link

Was that the one were he kept on distractedly wandering off the stage? And it was also insanely loud? It was an experience, certainly.

ledge, Monday, 27 June 2011 10:24 (twelve years ago) link

Hmmm, he did go off stage a bit, but I guess I'm used to that (he often likes to sing behind the amps I think). We're probably talking about the same one, as the Fabric one was rather less chaotic iirc.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Monday, 27 June 2011 10:30 (twelve years ago) link

I saw them perform with it twice

Not sure we should refer to Mark as "it". ;-)
