Get thee one Leichenschrei by SPK. More consistent than any album TG put out, but just as baffling & unnerving. Einsturzende's Drawings of Patient O.T. and Halber Mensch are worthy companions as well.

"In The Nursery" from Dreams Less Sweet was probably the last time Genesis truly sounded like an escaped mental patient...

I'm currently listening to 'Luke The Drifter' by Hank Williams. Excellent album from a true original. I'm not pissing you about, I just thought you should know what someone who was there is 'now' listening to.

Nice piece Shoes. It was a little different for me, I'd picked up the buzz on them early on, but couldn't figure out what that would sound like until I bought 2nd Annual Report. I can still sense the disorientation and mental confusion it created way back then. I found myself having to question everything around me as it shifted the reality perspective several notches off the dial. I'm not a fan of nostalgia love-ins but I like to think that those getting into it today as an 'innocent' will develop an interesting route through life. It had that impact on me, but then everything was up for grabs back then.

search out Landscape's "From the Tea-Rooms of Mars to the Hell-Holes of Uranus". there's a great track (Norman Bates) at bumrocks.com. i just found the album and it's pretty amazing.

whats the most accessible TG record for a novice?

When I was a novice, the one that got me into them was "Heathen Earth". I bought it out of curiosity - it looked weird & interesting, didn't get it at all at first, but something kept me coming back & listening to it again. Soon enough, it was one of my favourite records.

For more music in a similar-ish vein, I'd go along with whoever suggested Coil, as well as (early) Cabaret Voltaire.

i think 'hole' by scraping foetus off the wheel has stood the test of time. in fact, 'clothes hoist' sounds better to me now than it did in '84.
