I'm not expecting huge things, but my shameful secondary motivation is to keep it for a bit then ebay it anyway.

Is SPZ stuff very collectible?

> Recorded in one continuous take in June ’05 for John Coxon and Ashley Wales’ series of improvised music for their Treader label. Limited to 500 copies in gold embossed sleeve. Signed and numbered by Spaceman.

Typical smackhead BS - unfinished, unedited, half-assed nonsense

No doubt we can look forward to live albums by-the-dozen cf Thunders/Nico.

Anyone received their copies of this yet? Mine still hasn't shown up. Have emailled them, no reply yet though.

one month passes...
i know it's a shitty thing to ask for, but could someone who has a copy of guitar loops please ysi it or something?. i'd buy it but i can't find anyone selling it in the US.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 26 March 2006 22:34 (eighteen years ago) link

don't know where you are, but i saw copies for sale @ kim's in NYC a couple weeks ago. wasn't cheap though.

rajeev (rajeev), Sunday, 26 March 2006 22:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll YSI it to you once I download my copy- I'm pretty pissed because it was originally posted as a website-only limited edition, and so I ordered it and it cost me $30 US with shipping charges applied, and two weeks later I see it at Amoeba in LA and on US record store websites for $18.

And truth be told, it's not even worth the $18. I'm a huge Spacemen 3/Spiritualized/Spectrum fan, to the point where I even listen to and enjoy the Pure Phase Tones for DJs record, and this is the worst thing Jason has ever done.

Go buy the new Sunroof! record instead....

That Guitar Loops album is so bad that I started listening to it for the first time and before it was over, I already began creating an eBay listing for it.

i was listening to this yesterday. my girlfriend made me turn it off. it really irritated her.
i wasn't that impressed either.

brontosaur, Monday, 27 March 2006 01:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Between this release and the directional shift on Amazing Grace, and the lack of any new Spectrum material after years of claims, I'm thinking we may have reached the final frontier for the Spacemen. Really sad.

The last E.A.R. release was actually pretty good, though.

And at least these guys have the whole drugs excuse, so I've never had the same crushed expectations with them that I've had every time I hear the name Kevin Shields....

Giles Manius (jsoulja), Monday, 27 March 2006 01:39 (eighteen years ago) link

um the treader records thing is run by spring heel jack who are now big on their improv. If you don't like improv, you almost certainly won't like any of the cds on their label... I've not heard guitar loops but would reckon it would be similar to J Spaceman's work on "masses" and "ammassed" two SHJ records... I don't know where drugs come into this really...?

i like the guitar loops disc quite a bit. i mean, obviously if you're expecting anything remotely related to spiritualized it'll be an extreme disappointment. i can't profess to be the biggest spiritualized fan, but this thing hold my attention more than the last couple of spiritualized records. and it's completely devoid of the whole i'm a saint/i'm a sinner dichotomy that due has run into the ground.

Hi Giles. Do you happen to have a decent recording of Ladies and Gentlemen from Coachella '99? The only one I've found sounds like it was recorded on a dictaphone from 500 meters. Thanks.

PS. To post a YSI link, you need to enter an email address of your own on the YSI form to receive the YSI link. Then cut and paste into a message here.

Hi

Will Carruthers here .
There is a little spiritualized news at the end of this message .

We have made a new lp . It's called "Home improvement for condemned buildings "
Mark Refoy and Kevin Cowen played guitar on it and Jonny Mattock played the drums.

It was recorded during the summer of 2005 in a soon to be demolished old office block in Leicester .
It's got ten songs on it and if you want to hear some of them please try out our new website
at www.willcarruthers.com .You will need flash installed to view it .
You will find some free mp3 downloads and some audio streams .
The album is available to buy through the website at this address .

http://freelove.moonfruit.com/goshopping

The first five hundred are numbered , signed and painted and decorated by my own fair hands.

We also have the psi love you album,(that I played bass on), and some rather nice handmade posters for sale .

If you go to this address

http://www.apolloaudio.com/26

You will find an online stream of four tracks from the album , plus a new version of van fever incident ...(now with added Mark Refoy)
This ep is available as a paid download for the price of four dollars .

thanks

ps ...also, possibly of interest to fans of Lazer guided melodies . Somebody kindly sent me fifty copies of a spiritualized bootleg , containing unreleased versions of songs ,, outtakes , rehearsals and a peel session from the Lazer guided melodies lineup.
There is some great stuff on here you won't have heard before .
If you would like more details please send an e-mail to frndly_fr@yahoo.co.uk.

REHEARSALS

these are from a good quality cassette recording of a Spiritualized rehearsal at Jason's flat in Rugby. They have been cleaned up and mastered and the sound is powerful if not totally hi-fi.

amen
angel sigh
If I were with her now
run

PEEL SESSIONS:
Already released,but a nice little bonus .

Angel sigh

We have very few of these .
We are putting together a list of people who want one. If you definitely want to buy this, reply to this e-mail address (frndly_fr@yahoo.co.uk.) stating how many you want .

OTM

Amazing Grace was horrid! I love Let It Come down but apparently one of the few who do. It was over the top but think it's the best lyrics Jason ever wrote and love the fact that he blew so much money making that record...but it worked.

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I liked amazing grace and I loved Let It Come Down.
But this guitar loops im not so sure about...

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 3 April 2006 14:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Let It Come Down is actually a great record, despite the dicey press coverage. Never understood exactly why it got slammed. I've always heard it had to do with the choir bombast and the commercial success of Ladies and Gentlemen..., but I'd guess it's an example of critic-actually-fan, and the biggest fans sometimes have the hardest time with evolving sounds.

Amazing Grace was definitely a step back, but there's a few great tracks on it all the same.

I'm having a real hard time uploading "Guitar Loops" as a YSI. I've had a firewall issue lately and I think this may have something to do with it.

It really is that bad, though, so you're not missing out on anything but disappointment....

Giles Manius (jsoulja), Monday, 3 April 2006 16:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I was totally stoked about getting any new music from the Spaceman, and when I got Guitarloops in the mail and listened to it I was pretty pissed. Not at the man, but I was dissapointed and found it unlistenable. Since then I've put it in a few times and it has grown on me a good bit.

I've tried emailing about that Spiritualized boot, has anybody else gotten a response? Not me, yet.... God I want this boot so bad.

Sounds like Spiritualized. Which I love, but I guess I've given up on the notion of being surprised by Jason.

not completely unfamiliar to this group, but i bought 'let it come down' cd off the back of low covering 'lord, can you hear me'. i got five songs in tonight and had to turn it off... it sounded so cluttered, orchestrally overblown, no dynamics... i don't really think i get it? i tried to crack spacemen 3 when i was younger, but they were lost on me then, too. i wanna like them, though. what to listen to from here?

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 22 April 2022 20:33 (one year ago) link

Let It Come Down is still my favorite Spiritualized album, and I feel like this new album and the last one tap into the soulful, hungover widescreen orchestral vibe of that one better than anything he's done since

J. Sam, Friday, 22 April 2022 20:34 (one year ago) link

that seems promising, I like Let It Come Down, but it definitely isn't my favorite. I really disliked when he went for more of a raw rock sound, it just didn't work for me, so maybe this is a step in the right direction.

Mark Refoy with a story he posted just now on FB:

Spiritualized fun fact
It’s time for a lazer guided fun fact folks. Back in 1991 Spiritualized were in the process of recording their debut album in various different studios. A studio we spent a lot of time in was Bath Moles. During the recording of 200 Bars it was decided that some accordion was needed. A call was made and an accordion player turned up to add the necessary vibe.
Or so we thought.
She was a very polite and well spoken lady, not the folkie type we’d been expecting. We played the song and when it came to the part when Kate intoned “One Hundred” Jason said…“we want you to play over the chords B and F# like this - da dada da da da da dada, da dada da da dada dada - yeah? Okay?” There was a moment of silence and she replied…”well I can’t possibly do that.” We were a bit taken aback - ”er, why not? You can play the accordion can’t you?” Somewhat smarted she replied…“yes I can play the accordion but that’s syncopation, it can’t be done on an accordion.” I picked up a guitar and played what we wanted her to play. She said…“that’s all very well and good but an accordion can’t do that.”
We begged to differ so a plan was formulated - while she squeezed the accordion, myself and Jason pushed the buttons and played the keys. After a fashion, job done.
So the lesson learnt was, three people using all their hands can play a two chord syncopated rhythm on one accordion.
