Ian Brown releases his new album 'The World Is Yours' on 24th September. His fifth solo record, this is a record he intended would "bury everything else I’ve ever done", and it’s hard to argue with the man. It’s an inspired creation – musically it’s awesome, lyrically it is personal, compassionate and defiant.

First single 'Illegal Attacks', released September 17th, is a tour de force. An in-your-face pop song like you’ve never heard before. Sinéad O'Connor and Brown duet, one of O’Connor’s two appearances on the record. It is a heady, powerful duet with stabbing double-bass and harp, sung with the kind of conviction that makes the hairs on your neck stand up.

Brown collaborated with two sets of producers – Black Ops and Emile - and recorded the album at various studios in London with Brown travelling to Windmill Lane studios in Ireland to record 'Illegal Attacks' and 'Some Folks Are Hollow' with O’Connor. Andy Rourke Ex-Smiths and Ex-Happy Mondays/Big Arm’ Paul Ryder contribute on bass. Steve Jones Ex-Sex Pistols appears on guitar on two tracks ('Sister Rose' and 'Me and You Forever') and Paul Cook (also Ex-Sex Pistols) appears on drums on the same tracks 'Sister Rose' and 'Me And You Forever' . The stunning string arrangements are the work of one Simon Hale.

'On Track', previously appeared as an instrumental on the soundtrack to Russian film Paragraph 78, but here takes on full song-form.

With a huge UK tour kicking off at the end of September, Ian Brown is back to entertain and inspire. The World is Yours is honest, direct, tender in parts and full of hope, acknowledging the fragile nature of the world, it makes you feel lucky to be alive.

He's horribly out-of-tune live. I mean HORRIBLY. And ever since I saw him kick the head in of some bouncer who tried to protect him at the infamous SF show, well, he just hasn't been the same for me.

Were you actually at the show? I remember reading a review of that particular show a few years back and I thought it had to have been ghost-written by John Squire. Just a complete fiasco (the show, not the article).

I was there, yes. It was truly one of the most surreal experiences of my life.

Finally, after years of searching, I’ve found it: the worst album ever made. Quite the most fascinating thing about the former Stone Roses front man’s new record is wondering what his “people” – producer, A&R man, label boss, manager, mates – said to the singer after listening to the entirely unchanging sonic palette of processed beats, by-numbers string arrangements, clunky, lame, lazy, schoolboy-rhyming platitudes and polemic (“Life’s no simple situation/There’s the added complication/That the reason we’re all here, nobody knows/In all creation”), and Brown’s barely-there vocals. Did they go, “Nice one, son”, “Good old Browny, he’s done it again”? And if so, why, how – when the rest of us are laughing so loudly, we can scarcely hear the “songs”?

Ian Brown has a fine line in psycho fans, and unlike most there's the faintest possibility that one of them might actually come round and kick your head in for an unfavourable review.

Then again, I didn't think anyone other than his fanbase ever actually noticed new Ian Brown releases.

I have friends who might be counted amongst the "psycho fans" brigade were they not such meek, pleasant individuals. one of them met him (extremely enthusiastically) on the beach in brighton on friday night. and i have heard only good things about the new album so what that's all about i dunno.

His new album is very good. Very heavy on lush orchestration, which is the main thing that sets it apart from his previous material. There's an entire bonus disc of orchestral mixes, which I actually enjoyed a lot. Other than that, it's not a huge departure from his other material; a few great songs, more than a few cringeworthy lyrics, but overall very solid. "Illegal Attacks" is probably the worst thing on the album.

The man is an arrogant, gormless twunt and the Stone Roses are the most overrated band ever.

I'm kind of liking the new single, even if it's just a reconfiguration of every solo single he's ever released. What I'm struck with, though (probably because I haven't gone to the trouble of seeing an Ian Brown video in years and years), is how all the sudden he's a VERY OLD MAN.

Weird, I just was listening to him yesterday for the first time in awhile. "Corpses," "Set My Baby Free," and a few others really do hold up well. Oddly, the AMG review of "The World Is Yours" calls Golden Greats and Music of the Spheres post-Britpop masterpieces.

Pre-recorded vocals would seem to be a better idea when it comes to an Ian Brown gig - someone else's vocals.

He has never been a great vocalist, but he seems to have got significantly worse of late, you could probably pick a random member of the audience and they would do a better job.

Saw the Mondays a few weeks ago. Shaun wasn't great (was he ever?) but Rowetta was incredible live xp
