just get the DVD. i actually haven't heard the live records, sorry!

The DVD is the shit.

BigLurks, Sunday, 11 May 2008 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

i concur!

tehresa, Sunday, 11 May 2008 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, DVD is really awesome and kind of inspiring shit.

ian, Monday, 12 May 2008 01:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Both live albums about equally good. Which is to say both GREAT, you can't really go wrong. My favorite, tho, is that 2x10" live thing they split with Napalm Beach. Not 'cuz it's so much better overall (it ain't), but 'cuz the version of "54-40 or Fight" on that is the best damn thing Dead Moon ever did. Gives me chills to this day.

contenderizer, Monday, 12 May 2008 01:05 (fifteen years ago) link

What exactly happened to Andrew Loomis? He really seemed in it 'til the end in that DVD.

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 12 May 2008 01:18 (fifteen years ago) link

i think there was an incident on tour, likely stemming him his serious alcohol problem? don't really know any details.

ian, Monday, 12 May 2008 02:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Pity, he was so likable.

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 12 May 2008 13:22 (fifteen years ago) link

the best part of the dvd is where fred cole is doing an interview with the most clueless man ever.

ian, Monday, 12 May 2008 16:19 (fifteen years ago) link

the best part of the DVD is where he forces the tour van to make a detour to a casino so they can play slots all night after EVERY SHOW lol

dmr, Monday, 12 May 2008 17:08 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe there is another thread for this but who's heard the Pierced Arrows full-length? as good as DM?

dmr, Monday, 12 May 2008 17:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Pierced Arrows - the thread

I didn't know they had an album out! cool.

sleeve, Monday, 12 May 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I googled their website, it looks like they have one 7" and one LP / CD

dmr, Monday, 12 May 2008 17:51 (fifteen years ago) link

the single is great, I have that. totally recommended.

sleeve, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link

no (non-scummy) reason to get the 7" if i get the LP right?

69, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link

no, looks like both tracks are on teh LP.

Do these guys not smoke pot/do any drugs? One of my friends offered them a joint after a show and they declined -- when talking about one of Fred's early guitar players freaking out on acid in the DVD, they quickly say something about "why do you think we're so against dope?" I just always pictured them as the crazy old hard-partying couple.

Reatards Unite, Saturday, 10 January 2009 06:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Then again, there's that hardcore survivor, trial by fire vibe. Kinda goes hand in hand with AlAnon, recovery program, etc. By the time you're fifty-something, anyway.

P.S. Buy the Rats LP on MssssP.

Reatards Unite, Saturday, 10 January 2009 07:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Record stores! Dunno how many copies, but probly few. Vinyl only. First one only (S/T).

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Saturday, 10 January 2009 07:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Not exactly in print, but recent so still available is what I mean. Plus SO DAMN GOOD.

Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Saturday, 10 January 2009 07:24 (fifteen years ago) link

how timely, now I can remind everybody that Mississippi just reissued the first 3 LPs.

Fred+Toody FOREVER!

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 June 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

are those first three a good place to start ? i've missed the boat with these guys.

tylerw, Thursday, 23 June 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

hell yes. first is amazing - not least for their cover of "parchment farm" - and the next two are at least as good. best intro possible.

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Thursday, 23 June 2011 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

the echoes from the past 2CD comp from sub pop is pretty awesome way to start and easy to find, etc

the beta banned (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

hmm, looks like it's out of print? selling for obscene amounts on amazin, sub pop sez they're out of stock...

tylerw, Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

amazon, not amazin

tylerw, Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

Weird, really? It is a great comp.
But it's hard to go wrong with anything DEAD MOON.

Not completely sold on Pierced Arrows fwiw.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

liked that comp, but it was something of an embarrassment of riches. 5 or 6 albums worth of tracks, all of them good, but the length and sequencing make it something of a chore. i prefer their better albums, though the comp is a good pocket guide.

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:39 (twelve years ago) link

yeah jeez i checked discogs too and it's 79 bucks there! wtf that just came out a couple years ago

the beta banned (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

It was on sale at Sonic Boom in Seattle when I was up their around the time of the Sub Pop 20 thing.
It was only ten bucks! This was three summers ago.
Silly.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, must've been someone's pet project at sub pop, probably didn't press too many of them.

tylerw, Thursday, 23 June 2011 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

Trip Maker, Thursday, 23 June 2011 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

what'd be real sweet: a repress of the third rats LP, in a desperate red, which is probably my fave fred/toody joint and not just for obscurity points. it's got a rad postpunky vibe and every single song is so fucking sick.

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 23 June 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

I like the first Rats and REALLY REALLY like Intermittent Signals, so In A Desperate Red sounds like it'd be a winner.
I asked Fred about that when Pierced Arrows played at a High School in town a couple years ago and he either didn't hear me (quite possible from what I understand of his hearing troubles) or just didn't feel like talking about it.

3rd & final Rats LP is finally out on Water Wing, looks fantastic!

https://www.waterwingrecords.com/shop/ww27mor1?

6 years of work went into remixing and remastering this version - with Fred Cole twisting knobs and obsessing over it's every detail and then Greg Shadoan and Tim Stollenwerk finishing the job. One of Fred Cole's greatest records and impossible to find for many years - at last this LP is available as it was meant to be heard. Play it loud....

First Pressing includes a 40 page booklet and a xerox replica of a Rats show poster!

Pulled out Thirteen Off My Hook, amazing to realize I bought it nearly 30 years ago! "I'm still a loner without many friends" (from "Kicked Out Kicked In") jumped out after reading that interview with Toody ("“In a weird way I don’t feel like I’m without him. We were both always loners -- we were just loners together. So now I’m a loner alone.”)
"War Baby" just started, never fails to set me off

was in line for a drink before the Mekons show in Seattle last July and they were playing "Poor Boy" before the show started, me and the guy ahead of me in line spontaneously went into the "pissed off, pissed off, pissed off, it's just the way I am" chorus together and high fived.

My gateway, when I was assigned this Columbus OH preview many years ago, still doing homework:

Pierced Arrows
Thursday @ The Summit
Along with the other suspects forcibly re-named Lollipop Shoppe, Fred Cole conjured “You Must Be a Witch,” a ‘60s garage classic, and even a hit. Such music biz vindication didn’t impress guitarist Fred or his bassist wife Toody, who orbited indie rock’s Dead Moon for 20 years, before Pierced Arrows. Fred’s voice can pierce any sound system (or lack thereof). Both of the Coles project psychedelic soul over and through their fractured feedback, buzzing surveillance, Kelly Halliburton’s flying saucer cymbals, and the marching sway of melodies, always ready for more.

Saw Toody in a small bar last night (LaurelThirst Public House in Portland). Great show. She played with a trio + backup singer for a few songs.

Feels to reductive to say it felt like seeing Patti Smith in a hole in the wall, but that's what came to mind. Short clip here:

An incredibly intense live document of the band’s legendary 20-date first tour of New Zealand. Recorded before an audience of about 40 people in Invercargill (Keith Richards called it “the arsehole of the world”), this is Dead Moon at their most savage, their best live recording, the way they were meant to be heard!

Toody Cole recalled that the band had been invited to open for Nirvana that year, but one of Fred Cole’s ironfast rules was “never cancel a gig you committed to for a better one.” So Dead Moon burned through New Zealand as planned.

Recorded live at the Glengarry Tavern, Invercargill New Zealand Saturday September 5th 1992
