Jeff W, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

wot no kittenz? right, what's this "new ILM"?

Alan T, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wasn't the old one bad enough? Kee-ripes.

Nicole, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Roughly speaking:

'Old ILM' = "people who talked about the bands I liked"

'New ILM' = "people who talk about the bands I don't like"

where 'I' is the person using the term. It's a 9/11 cultural upheaval thing.

Tom, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I really don't care if they talk about bands I like or not so long as the conversation is interesting. That doesn't happen often, but no less so than before - it's still always the occasional interesting thread, plus loads of unengaging stuff. I just think the old ILM was much more clubby and fraternal, now there's a lot more outsiders/relative newbies with different tastes.

Nicole, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

'New ILM' = "people who talk about the bands I don't like"

I think the boring aspect of the "New ILM" = "people who talk about the bands they don't like (or know much about)". there seems to be a more "guilty until proven innocent" presumption than in the past - but I might just be overly aware as I'm making an effort to avoid this in my own thinking about music.

I agree with Nicole that it is less clubby and fraternal - which is a little uncomfortable at first but inevitable and not to be feared.

fritz, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I liked it when it was a clubby group of people that actually came to decisions/conclusions (or something) about threads, instead of just a load of random faceless disjointed "I like it"/"I don't"s which it;s become.

Graham, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think it's a good thing, but it hasn't led to a whole lot of interesting new ideas - yet.

Nicole, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not that I can talk, but I consider myself more of a reader than a writer anyway.

Nicole, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

There also seems to be a lot more Socratic/Devil's Advocacy threads where one poster takes a radical position and defends it vs. a legion of orcs from all sides, whereas some older arguments had a tone more like a squabble between members of a fellowship.

ILM is dire at the moment. Threads like ' what music would you pick your arse to ' or the endless mindless 'Tony Iommi vs Bernadette Nolan' variants make for grim reading. I like it best when there are 2 or 3 thought-provoking threads going on at once which I can participate in or just follow as a spectator. I don't really care what the threads are *about* , perhaps its WHO they draw in which defines them.

I don't agree with Tom's post above (and I don't understand the 9/11 comment). I'm not really that interested in talking about bands *I* like as being forced to think about music I like/dislike in a new way. The Pinefox is a master at that, and I wish he'd post more. Also using the collective knowledge out there as a sounding board to ask opinions - this largely still works.

There are some people who I wish would post more - Starry for one, also Stevie T and Marcello, and plenty I wish would post less. (Note that these are not people that I necessarily agree with - I just like what they say and the way they say it). Because of the age of the forum virtually 50% of the questions seem to have been asked before too. I guess there's no way to avoid that with newbies.

Anyway, I 'll stick around. I'm boring like that

Just ignore it then. Instead of pouting start a thread. I am sure that some agree with you (that it is indeed grim reading). Instead of moaning, try and solve the *problem*. Board (boreds?) and mailing list are in constant flux. Just like life. It can't be always like you want it to be. Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree. But then I don't agree either.

I recently discovered LUSENET, and I've enjoyed it much. I hope my posts aren't some of the shitty new ones. I try to be somewhat obscure/engaging. But, the ILM forum must be getting more hits if someone like me found it. Seems like there's quite the population of John Bulls here. Who are some of the "old" ILMers?

bryan, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

basically anyone who posted before jan. 1st 2002.

(this is largely a joke, but it's also true to an extent. the large influx of newbies seem to have arrived hot on the heels of the new year.)

i don't have a -problem- with ilm, per se. i think that'd be implying a sort of propriety/interest which might not be healthy to have in the first place. i -do- think the signal to noize ratio has been terrible lately (and despite what mr. there is no such thing as adovcacy sez above, even he's been playing devils adovacate for the sheer crush of new bytes every day.) part of this may be me, it may be the fact that i don't have much to say about music these days, that there's not much at the present moment which is really firing me up - either from a sheer listening standpoint or a broader social one. on the other, one more mtv is bad mmmkay? post and i'll be happy if greenspun goes down and never comes back. even the threads i've bothered to post to lately have been largely "buying guide" ones, cf. mogwai.

THAT SAID: there seem to be at least a couple threads per week which attempt to make up for it...ethan's psuedonymous "anne" thread for instance. the is ______ rock/pop/klezmer? threads are becoming numbing. (sorry, but it's true.)

Eek - my post above was a joke!

Tom, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

(i mean, i'm not gonna outright lie and say that ILM is better than ever, but if it was terminal, i wouldn't still be reading/skimming. i'm still more likely to side with the good doctor though. you lot really can be apologists sometimes.)

jess, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like the LUSENET interface. It's simple and straightforward, no membership hassles, etc. Of the myriad garbage pop cult forums online, the ILM/ILE community is a pretty clever bunch. If you want to see idiocy just check yahoo . They're so appalling it's fascinating. Sort of like reading the Southern Poverty Law Center's monthly KlanWatch report. Anyhow, I used to check in at the warprecords site, but warpnet went down, so I stumbled into ILM by accident one day looking for a BoC forum. Glad to be here.

bryan, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's to do with the composition of the forum:

Aug 2000 - ILM started, attracts only existing Freaky Trigger readers.

Early 2001 - ILM starts showing up on Google. Momus sends half of alt.fan.momus onto the boards, widening range of regulars.

April 2001 - freakytrigger.com gets wiped out, leaving ILM without a central 'focus' so to speak.

June 2001 - ILE breaks away from ILM - some ILE users almost never post to ILM again. ILM becomes more purely 'music' based.

Later 2001 onwards - loads and loads of Googlers find boards, many stick around; Jay-Z/Nas thread; other sites link to ILM.

The change in ILM has been for better and worse. More Google people = a wider range of music interests (eg Bryan the BOC fan), because you get specialists in almost any style of music. But paradoxically the place starts looking more and more like any other Internet music message board, whatever 'identity' ILM had gets more diffuse.

In practise this means as Dr.C says a much higher noise level, fewer great threads - it also means though that some of the stuff I took for granted I've been forced to defend or think through more and that's a good thing.

I think if you'd asked me when I set up ILM what I'd have wanted it to be, I'd have said a community where any aspect of music can be looked at intelligently and open-mindedly, and where you get to hear surprising viewpoints. It surprises me less these days but I think it's still intelligent and open-minded.

The thing is that if there's a decline it's not the fault of new posters, it's partly the fault of the 'old hands' getting tired of making their arguments again and again and getting a bit lazy, tossing off one-liners to comments that 'back in the day' would have got a para or two. Well that's what's happened with me, anyway!

chaki, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the advocacy thing upthread was a joke (if there is no "influence" there what wd be the point of advocacy yada yada)
the "is it rock?" thing was sort of half a joke, half an experiment => ie there is a real something stuck in my subconscious (abt definitions and genre) that i wanted to quarry at, and haha i wanted you lot to do the work for me => it didn't really work, not least cuz i posted my answers at a weekend when no one else much cared or noticed (sorry, i am feeling a bit g.gossetish abt this i think: eg yr responses have shown me no RESPECT - when actually yr responses exactly reflect the miscuing of the original thread cluster)

i don't even slightly feel ilm is "dire" at the moment, tho i am a bit bored with being mr one-liner myself (and i suspect others are bored with this too: use other modes mark s)

mark s, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think a lot of potentially great threads taper off too soon, largely because they're not contentious enough. Not a diss on the provocative threads (I like 'em) but it's a bit of a shame that a lot of people are only motivated to elaborate on their ideas in an adversarial setting. eg. Jess's complaint that the Mogwai thread is essentially a 'buyer's guide' - it seems to take a lot to motivate people to move beyond this stage, or the basic classic/dud stage, and really grapple with the subject matter.

Tim, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think the boring aspect of the "New ILM" = "people who talk about the bands they don't like (or know much about)".

I've started to censor myself somewhat to avoid this. There are many, many bands about which the only thing I have to say is: "I used to like them more, but I still like a few of their songs." Or "I used to like them, and then I stopped liking them. I've missed their last five or six albums." Why bother really?
