cozen

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:49 (fourteen years ago) link

someone explain to me how this works...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 March 2005 23:51 (fourteen years ago) link

the horsey moves two along and one across, the dirty vicar moves diagonally, freddy mercury goes as far as and to whatever direction he damn well pleases, whereas elvis is so fat he can only move one square at a time. castles, on the other hand despite being inanimate objects, can move in straight lines, the pwns move forward and then get killed, hence the name

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 00:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i was really disappointed that there was no freddy mercury piece....

Dr. Eldon Tyrell (ex machina), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Sorry, chess, I mean! I'm not used to playing a new game!

(Anyone fancy an ISC date at lunchtime? SOWPODS, 13 mins void?)

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:49 (fourteen years ago) link

this is a really good interface. all it needs is a duel-style face-slap animation to pop up when you challenge someone.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:55 (fourteen years ago) link

God. I am blushing at my desk about how awful I am at chess. I might go to Chess and Bridge at lunchtime to pick up a beginners guide to NOT BEING BLUDDY AWFUL at chess. Aw maaan.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 10:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i am now making it worse, yaaaaaay

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 11:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:02 (fourteen years ago) link

I am enjoying this.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't get it, can't the castle take the queen here to avoid the resignation?

chess game analysis is abt as dorky as it gets (edit: well, there is go game analysis...)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:34 (fourteen years ago) link

castle takes queen, horsey to F7 checkmate

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Sven Bastard (blueski), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 13:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I've just played two games of Scrabble and pwn3d in both, time to come back to the final death throes of my not quite so stellar chess career...

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 14:57 (fourteen years ago) link

like with the bowling eh?

i'm like that with most things really as a matter of fact!! :D

kephm, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 17:45 (fourteen years ago) link

signed on as kephm. my game is so poor right now

kephm, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

The delay between turns really lets you savour just how bad a mistake you've made with your last move. Oh yes.

Greig (treefell), Thursday, 17 March 2005 11:42 (fourteen years ago) link

yes, a slow agonising death at the hands of tiefschwarz is certainly being 'savoured'

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 17 March 2005 11:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Casuitry's massive positional advantage is now countered by my crushing one-pawn lead! I'm really enjoying all these games.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 March 2005 13:08 (fourteen years ago) link

it's good fun.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 17 March 2005 13:09 (fourteen years ago) link

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 17 March 2005 13:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 17 March 2005 16:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 17 March 2005 16:07 (fourteen years ago) link

its pretty goofy

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 November 2019 02:48 (five days ago) link

I’ve worked my way up from “barely remember how the pieces move” to “pretty consistently beating the computer on level 3 at chess.com.” I downloaded lichess because - unlimited puzzles! - but it’s a whole new ball of wax... stockfish lvl 1 takes me in under 25 moves nearly every time. And the solutions to some of the puzzles are... mystifying?

Una Palooka Dronka (hardcore dilettante), Sunday, 17 November 2019 05:11 (five days ago) link

u cn click on analysis mode to see why some puzzles solve the way they do

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 November 2019 05:17 (five days ago) link

also

the computer is so boring play against ppl imo

― lag∞n, Tuesday, November 12, 2019 3:16 PM (five days ago) bookmarkflaglink

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 November 2019 05:17 (five days ago) link

on lichess they drop u in at 1500 so youll may get beat pretty bad but it only take like 3 or 4 losses to get all the way down to 1000 (or up to 2000) when u first start, theyll figure out yr level p fast

lag∞n, Sunday, 17 November 2019 05:20 (five days ago) link

I may give that another shot, what's the best format for idiots who want to lose quickly but still learn something

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 18 November 2019 01:20 (four days ago) link

5+3 prob

lag∞n, Monday, 18 November 2019 01:21 (four days ago) link

There we go

Swilling Ambergris, Esq. (silby), Monday, 18 November 2019 02:30 (four days ago) link

hahaha actually using chess books and working out positions on a real board and calculating lines by yourself is probably superior to watching videos but videos give insight for very little effort and working out positions from a book take a lot more effort. if u want to get better quickly imo play lots of tactics and maybe research an opening line for white

Mordy, Monday, 18 November 2019 02:45 (four days ago) link

yeah lets use books and boards like were pioneers in a wagon train about to be attacked by mormons

lag∞n, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:06 (four days ago) link

F puzzles and positions, just play

June Pointer’s Valentine’s Day Secret Admirer Note Author (calstars), Monday, 18 November 2019 03:10 (four days ago) link

puzzles are actually the only way to improve sad but true

lag∞n, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:12 (four days ago) link

how do you guys deal w/ openings? like getting better at them? i always feel like i'm just kinda playing random moves at first, obv there are like a billion different openings you can memorize but that seems pretty overwhelming.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 18 November 2019 03:21 (four days ago) link

i studied a few openings for white + black (more for black since it's more reactionary) and try to review them regularly. chessable.com is good for that as are videos + books.

if you really want to get better prioritize longer time format games since calculating in game (and then reviewing your game afterwards) will make you better. i am v guilty of not doing this enough it's much more pleasurable to play a bunch of shorter time format games (my preference is 10m but shorter w/ an increment can be good too) but like 15m+10s format or just 30m are excellent for getting better.

Mordy, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:39 (four days ago) link

i just played the same opening and couple of defenses every time til i got familiar w their ins and out

lag∞n, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:41 (four days ago) link

i tried playing longer time formats and im so habituated to moving fast that i cldnt help myself lol

lag∞n, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:42 (four days ago) link

i saw someone maybe john bartholomew say that shorter time formats basically just challenge yr habitual knowledge - you play about as well as you currently are when you play them - but you need the longer formats to develop new ways of thinking/seeing the board

Mordy, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:44 (four days ago) link

iirc

Mordy, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:44 (four days ago) link

yeah i mean it for sure makes sense

lag∞n, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:46 (four days ago) link

weirdly at least on lichess it seems like the longer formats are a lot softer tho, diff prob smaller pool of players i guess

lag∞n, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:47 (four days ago) link

just ended an 8 match losing streak with a win. guess who's back babee.
