I'm still perplexed why anyone would compared Robyn and Lady Gaga, who sound/look/etc totally different and have a completely different MO. Anyway, as a fan of both, I wonder honestly if Gaga would merit if the visual component were not so strong - if she didn't make epic gonzo videos, wear meat dresses, light things on fire, etc. Robyn, on the other hand, seems to be gaining traction minus those (cool!) peripherals. Despite a thinner voice and starker beats, she doesn't seem to need them the way Gaga does.

I still see them as the two leading female electropop stars, although Robyn sadly hasn't managed to have the same kind of enormous superstar success that Lady Gaga does.

noz is really repping for that cam & vado track, it's good but it seems like a weird choice given all the great songs they had this year

no hipster hats (The Brainwasher), Saturday, 18 December 2010 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Listening to the Rangers now and it's fine (super-boring band name and album title though), but I would not have thought that sounding vaguely like Ashra Tempel would make something "avant-rock." This and the other stuff I've listened to from that Wire list so far all sounds like I could have been listening to it in the early 80s, which is fine I guess.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 18 December 2010 20:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Wait, Michael Hurley is considered "avant rock" now?? (Guessing his records are still too slow and quiet for me regardless, but you never know. Still wish he'd make something like Have Moicy! again.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 18 December 2010 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

The criterion for being "avant" is just that it gets covered in The Wire, I think. God forbid they would write about anything other than the cutting edge (or admit to it).

seandalai, Saturday, 18 December 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i got nothing bad to say about the wire. someone has to write about that stuff. might as well be them. they do a good job. do kinda wish there was a Wire-y Option-esque monthly in the states though.

scott seward, Saturday, 18 December 2010 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

xp Then why do they need to have a separate "avant rock" list? Wouldn't that just be the same as their regular list? (Oh wait, the other stuff would be avant non-rock, maybe. I should probably read The Wire more, and I wouldn't ask such dumb questions.)

Btw, speaking of metal lists (as Scott sort of was), I think my favorite thing in the Decibel year-end issue is that the Agalloch/Ludicra guy put Blessure Grave's Judged By Twelve, Carried By Six in his Top Five. I was starting to think I was the only person who even noticed that record. (My goth album of the year, probably, if I had one. Unless Chrome Dome's EP counts, maybe.)

Or better yet, Op-esque!

xhuxk, Saturday, 18 December 2010 21:02 (thirteen years ago) link

sounding vaguely like Ashra Tempel

Or sometimes Durutti Column, or some lost very Krautrock/prog. influenced post-punk band.

I'm not trying to attack the Wire, really, which is kind of a passe activity at this point. I'll take the Rangers over any of the major indie rock releases I've heard from this year.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 18 December 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Signal To Noise is American, right?

larry longballs money (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 18 December 2010 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link

actually when i think about it, young L makes perfect sense as an act that the wire should be into

*plop*ism rules (deej), Saturday, 18 December 2010 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link

The reason it's called Avant Rock is because that is a monthly reviews section in The Wire. The Wire has a large, long general reviews section which covers all genres with a few featured reviews and then various subgenres have one page each of about ~10 1-2 paragraph reviews. So the Avant Rock is just a wire-designated subgenre that they use to organize reviews. They also have a review section called "Outer Limits" which is significantly more vague and broad than "Avant Rock." I would say Avant Rock roughly spans the line of accessibility from indie-crossover territory (Ariel Pink) to "anything using a guitar" (Bill Orcutt). Rangers and Xeno & Oaklander are the only dubious inclusions under that rubric.

x-posts

I think so. I won't buy it any more because the print is too small and the text is too close to the binding. Also Signal to Noise is a little more: interviews with people who do pirate radio broadcasts of electro-acoustic improv out in the middle of Utah.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 18 December 2010 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

It must mean something because I think I tend to end up liking things labeled "avant rock" more than I do things labeled indie rock.

i was reading some old signal to noise issues. they are interesting. they really like sun ra.

if you get a chance you should check out the Ida Con Snock LP from last year, more energy than any Hurley record in, well, uh, decades.
