i'm pretty sure Webster's decided last year that "whatever" now functions as a complete sentence.

some dude, Thursday, 16 December 2010 15:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess if you define it as a verb

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Thursday, 16 December 2010 15:32 (thirteen years ago) link

What is the subject and ever is the predicate. What did what do? Ever.

I believe the full sentence 'whatever' is the 3c definition, and here is the OED's history of word use for that definition:

1870 Barber Forness Folk 15, I cuddent leave t' pleass whativver wi'out seein' her.
1900 ‘A. Raine’ Garthowen 93 She's got a tidy pair of ankles, whatever.
1933 ‘R. Connor’ Girl from Glengarry 120, I am doing my utmost whatever.
1960 R. Williams Border Country i. ii. 58 What do it matter it's down?‥ He is Will whatever.
1962 Amer. N. & Q. I. 15/1 Whatever, from the early 1700s to the present day‥it was the musical that struck root as an indigenous form.
1980 New Musical Express 12 Jan. 33/1 Whatever, the myth looks momentous in its sleek new American threads.

seriously dude, I have a friend that only says "whatever" when I say I don't want to hang out or talk on the phone. the word has taken on such disgruntled connotations for me that I will never see it as laid back 90's slang again

but back to gnawing alison brie's ankles

not that "emo" is ever really a weighty term to be used in a particular proper way, but i feel like you're just throwing it around to the point of meaninglessness. maybe be more precise about whether you don't like the relationship stuff or the mopey 'profound' moments or something?

some dude, Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't really like this episode. I like the actors, I like to see them playing those characters. Whoever said upthread that you wouldn't want to watch a live action Family Guy was right.

trishyb, Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:21 (thirteen years ago) link

think abed is the problem for me, most of this season, being meta about the meta, and in this case turning into... id even k what, but it seemed emo to me

it was mostly the execution with this particular ep, but mean, i don't care if annie 'grows as a person' either, and i don't mind if they reveal that shirley had a drinking problem as a throwaway gag. it's a g-d sitcom and at its best when, um cartoony, except not literally. as for being meta and then getting hung about it -- include me out.

ohhhh we plop champagne (history mayne), Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:28 (thirteen years ago) link

'hung up'

ohhhh we plop champagne (history mayne), Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:28 (thirteen years ago) link

"being meta about meta" has been Abed's thing since day 1, not really any more this season than last (although the best use of it was in the messiah movie episode).

some dude, Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:32 (thirteen years ago) link

he's not hung up about the meta he's a meta-crazed guy who misses his mom

the messiah episide was the worst episode!

idk abed's thing has become more grating for me, reaching a nadir when shirley said 'meta'; and this ep seemed to be, in the end, for me, trying to 'explain' it, but not in a funny way (that's the only part that matters)

idk abed's thing has become more grating for me, reaching a nadir when shirley said 'meta';

you were pissed off at the show for acknowledging how older people sometimes aren't sure they're using a buzzword correctly (a buzzword that undoubtedly would be tossed around in re: abed by the other characters)?

da croupier, Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:38 (thirteen years ago) link

i dunno if 'meta' has that much currency, but ehh it felt like playing to the twitter-gallery.

ohhhh we plop champagne (history mayne), Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

who should they be playing to?

da croupier, Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

"ugh, observational humor about generational differences---how pandering! i expect so much more from NBC"

da croupier, Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i love this show but some of you are getting a little overdefensive here. history mayne's right that it can way be too sappy, and the sappiness is really uneven from episode to episode - some eps are just joke-a-thons and others are all feeeeeeelings and it would be nice to see them get a good mix of both in all the episodes. but ultimately i just want them to be funny.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:45 (thirteen years ago) link

the episodes do vary wildly in tone, but i dunno what sitcoms people are watching where this show doesn't qualify as a daring but reliable, audience-intelligene-respecting jokeathon. So if you ignore this to make incoherent complaints about "emo" you might be asked to pin those down.

da croupier, Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link

it's hardly reliable! you just agreed that it varies wildly in tone!

anyways you can love something but still admit that it has flaws. this is one of my favorite shows on right now but it's hardly perfect.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:51 (thirteen years ago) link

huh, two "hardly"s, something freudian going on there

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i said it's reliably funny. even the episodes that contain feeeeelings are also smart with a shit-ton of jokes.

also anybody acting like Abed's shtick is getting tiresome better not still be repping for HIMYM.

da croupier, Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link

tbh, this entire show plays to that gallery

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

this weeks's HIMYM was funny and last week's community wasn't -- there weren't many jokes so far as i'm concerned. or to put it another way, HIMYM has done things looking at why barney is barney without being wack, community failed that test. of course there've been less-funny HIMYM eps, but not *as* less-funny.

still like community -- liked the ep in the bar the other week
