James Blake vocal album to dominate next year's lists? I'm pretty perplexed at the hype he's getting.

Number None, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 09:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't be the only person that thought LCD were spudjged out at #12 and was surprised to see them reappear at #3. I don't mind 'I Can Change' but it does sound like it was written to be bedding music on a top 100 countdown. In fact I'll be prepared to bet it gets used in Channel 4's Top 100 Toys this weekend.

Mitchell Stirling, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 09:11 (thirteen years ago) link

me too - i find his stuff pretty lifeless and awkward tbh. it's weird, i hear music by a ton of producers in this scene, and i actively dislike very very few - when it's bad it's just boring or uninspired - but i def dislike his stuff. and yet, here we are, crossover hype. it should be girl unit getting all of this tbh.

xp

Suppose he ticks a lot of boxes, dubstep influence, messing around with R&B samples but moving towards more traditional songcraft. Yep, he's gonna be inescapable.

Number None, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 09:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Tainted by Newsom in the top 10...otherwise, it's decent.

― Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, December 14, 2010 7:21 AM (2 hours ago)

I definitely agree with this.

I was surprised it was I Can Change so high, I do like it but Dance Yrself Clean is obviously the best song on that album.

Pleased with their Arcade Fire choice in the top 10, I wasn't a fan of the album at all but that's a great song.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 10:26 (thirteen years ago) link

not a list per se, but i always enjoy reading dusted magazine's idiosyncratic year-end wrap-up feature.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 14 December 2010 13:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, no matter what other lists do Dusted is guaranteed to be 90% stuff I never knew existed.

seandalai, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 13:37 (thirteen years ago) link

So glad to see "Desire Lines" up that high. I realize it wasn't an official "single" and thats why it hasn't been popping up on lists that are defined by such, but such an amazing song.

Dance Yrself Clean is obviously the best song on that album.

Yes and Yes.

If this is true maybe I might actually give that album a chance.

Wait Ned, you've been avoiding Sleigh Bells because of "Rill Rill"??? Did no one tell you that there are 2/3 songs on there where they are channeling Lush via dance beats?

"Kiss Players♥" (DJP), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 14:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I've heard a rumor to the effect. (Crucial difference between them and School of Seven Bells -- the latter did not have a really annoying song oversold to me as the greatest new thing around that put me off further investigation.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I have to agree with the general anti-"Rill Rill" sentiment. I like the song just fine and think it's a nice little respite on the album, but it seems weird that a publication such as Pitchfork would praise the band with great hyperbole for it's trademark sound and then pick the one song where they do the complete opposite sound as the best example of their musical talent. "Tell Em'" seems the obvious choice to me.

I like "Rill Rill" well enough but that is so not my go-to song on the album; that would be "Run the Heart":

Sleigh Bells have appropriate initials imo.

"Crown on the Ground" is fucking tight, too:

Infinity Guitars was the one that finally hooked me, but I don't think it's one that falls neatly into the "Lush-in-the-red" category.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Sleigh Bells' performance opening for LCD Soundsystem was one of the most awful things I've ever seen.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:03 (thirteen years ago) link

i've only heard "tell 'em" by sleigh bells and i absolutely loathed it

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Rill Rill is like the only song on that album I DON'T like, I have no idea why everyone rallys round it

skrrr boi (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:04 (thirteen years ago) link

That's definitely not a peanut butter and jelly show bill. More like peanut butter and dijonaise. xp

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:04 (thirteen years ago) link

"Crown on the Ground" was on P4k's list last year.

Indexed, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:05 (thirteen years ago) link

u right

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:05 (thirteen years ago) link

definitely some good stuff in the pitchfork list aside from their continued obsession with the "deep" soul-searching LCD tracks. they are extremely good at picking the best tracks on indie rock albums (e.g. "Desire Lines") and then go for the most maudlin bullshit on every new Murphy CD.

skip, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I wasn't making suggestions for what should be on the list, I was trying to get Ned to hear Sleigh Bells!

"Kiss Players♥" (DJP), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link

why is "run the heart" produced to make the listener feel like they have tinnitus

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link

how can you claim to like club music and then ask questions like that

"Kiss Players♥" (DJP), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link

The whole album is like that.

It took me months not to hate it, and now I actually love it.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Dan, since u r here, did you see this from the other day? Whatcha listening to 2010?

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:07 (thirteen years ago) link

i like club music that sounds pristine and totally polished!

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:07 (thirteen years ago) link

that constant high-pitched tinnitus thing in sleigh bells songs would be AWFUL in a club

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Half the bands I saw in clubs in the 90s played through horrible pa systems that sounded just like that.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I did see that, just haven't gotten to it

Lex, that Sleigh Bells album is about bombastic musical extremes; you are essentially genetically predisposed to dislike it.

"Kiss Players♥" (DJP), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:10 (thirteen years ago) link

omg that Niki & the Dove track, I am sold by the first 10 seconds

"Kiss Players♥" (DJP), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:11 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe you actually have tinnitus, lex -- sleigh bells sounds totally pristine and polished to the rest of us

I thought you might be.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:17 (thirteen years ago) link

So "Run the Heart" is definitely better than "Rill Rill" but...it's not the end of the world?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:27 (thirteen years ago) link

"Crown on the Ground" isn't really doing it for me either, then again that sounds like a pretty cruddy low kbps rip. (If it's meant to sound like that then I don't know what to think.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:30 (thirteen years ago) link

"why is "run the heart" produced to make the listener feel like they have tinnitus"

yeah, i hope none of the people who make this kind of stuff own dogs. that would just be cruel.

scott seward, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 15:32 (thirteen years ago) link

(If it's meant to sound like that then I don't know what to think.)

It's intentional.
