nice to see a list with the Chrissie Hynde record on it, it's got some killer tunes. also appreciate learning that Meat oaf released an album called "Hang Cool Teddy Bear" this year apparently.

some dude, Sunday, 12 December 2010 16:10 (thirteen years ago) link

lmfao @ "Meat oaf"

da puppier (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 12 December 2010 16:10 (thirteen years ago) link

haha Meat oaf (xpost)

some dude, Sunday, 12 December 2010 16:13 (thirteen years ago) link

ha! great unintentional -- but accurate -- description.

haw, no i haven't. and apparently it's where the ROCK '70s/'80s went to die--sure seems to be gettin' mighty ripe around about there, too.

You're Twistin' My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Man! (Ioannis), Sunday, 12 December 2010 17:32 (thirteen years ago) link

lol the one album in there I have been loudly stanning for since late summer ('Steeple' by Wolf People) they get the band and title backwards :(

Princess BigSam (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 12 December 2010 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link

These are both good (in fact, Ratt's album has shown up on a couple other lists I've seen, incuding Phil's metal one):

26. Heart - Red Velvet Car
20. Ratt - Infestation

But the FM who made Metropolis (#24) unfortunately turn out to not to be the same keyboard-heavy Canadian guitarless AOR/pomp power-trio who put out City Of Fear in 1980, but rather some British people.

xhuxk, Sunday, 12 December 2010 19:26 (thirteen years ago) link

this is actually my fave album by FM, but its kinda hard to find.

the old FM.

Good old Classic Rock. You always know where you are with a Classic Rock list.

Matt DC, Sunday, 12 December 2010 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link

1970?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 12 December 2010 22:45 (thirteen years ago) link

8. Jim Jones Revue - Burning your House Down

Good to see this turn up somewhere, it's a blast and massively underrated, if a bit hammy in places.

Matt DC, Sunday, 12 December 2010 22:49 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not quite up there with Classic Rock's list from 2008:

10. Motley Crue - Saints Of Los Angeles
9. Journey - Revelation
8. Big Linda - I Loved You
7. Whitesnake - Good To Be Bad
6. Def Leppard - Songs From The Sparkle Lounge
5. Airbourne - Runnin' Wild
4. Black Stone Cherry - Folklore & Superstition
3. Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy
2. Metallica - Death Magnetic
1. AC/DC - Black Ice

^^^ Does exactly what is says on the tin.

Matt DC, Sunday, 12 December 2010 22:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Whitesnake!!!!

seandalai, Sunday, 12 December 2010 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Honestly willing to believe that Classic Rock list is better than most of the lists we've seen on this thread.

Matt DC, Sunday, 12 December 2010 23:02 (thirteen years ago) link

As long as you need ever hear any of the albums?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 12 December 2010 23:03 (thirteen years ago) link

One of my favorite's of the year is on that Classic Rock list. In fact, the album I'm voting #1 in the metal poll is on it.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 12 December 2010 23:04 (thirteen years ago) link

i like that the classic rock list doesnt feel the need to incorporate albums outside its milieu just because theyre critically acclaimed. no kanye, no arcade fire, no bullshit

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Sunday, 12 December 2010 23:07 (thirteen years ago) link

lol that Hold Steady fits perfectly in that list. Wonder why the Walkmen and the National arent jockeying for posish too

da puppier (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 12 December 2010 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I've written for Classic Rock for about seven years (I'm mainly their go to guy for "mad stuff" like The Fall) and if I voted for albums outside its milieu (say Fabric55 by Shackleton for the LOLs) they would probably consider it a sacking offence. Quite right too.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Sunday, 12 December 2010 23:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Xhuxk OTM about the Heart album!!!!! It soundtracked my 1,000 trips to the storage unit during our move this summer, and the 999 trips back.

T Bone Streep (Cave17Matt), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Soon going to have to do a list of my top 101 albums of the year, many of which are unsurprisingly not here. LOL do people still read blogs?

T Bone Streep (Cave17Matt), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:26 (thirteen years ago) link

If viacom hadn't removed all The State's MTV skits from youtube, the "Slash" sketch would have been a nice video right about here.

billstevejim, Monday, 13 December 2010 05:50 (thirteen years ago) link

All of these lists are so good. Can't wait to see more.

billstevejim, Monday, 13 December 2010 05:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Would read again.

IF only.

rihanna refurbished my dick (rennavate), Monday, 13 December 2010 09:45 (thirteen years ago) link

that's actually one juvenile song that's woozy & druggy &... slow enough where it wouldn't sound retarded & gimmicky if panda covered it

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 09:58 (thirteen years ago) link

when is the panda album coming out anyway

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 09:59 (thirteen years ago) link

soderburg wtf

"over" blurb

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:26 (thirteen years ago) link

he calls drake the "king of hashtag rappers" and means it as a compliment

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:27 (thirteen years ago) link

oh, well to be fair he did say that diggy simmons sounded better on the beat

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i like the ramadanman track but so far nothing else i haven't heard already that sounds interesting to me

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

it's weird tho -- i liked the beat at first, though now i find it pretty repulsive, but in any event it doesn't strike me as the type of beat like "miss me" or something where you can just totally vibe to the thing while ignoring the rapping -- it seems more, purposefully, like a backdrop beat that's really meant to emphasize the lyrics

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

talking about "over" obv

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

damn, i always forget how good that alicia joint is

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:32 (thirteen years ago) link

"over" beat is dope in a heatmade in '04 kinda way but that just makes me wish i could hear some roc dudes in their prime spit gully shit on it

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:33 (thirteen years ago) link

also i thought his point about t-pain was bizarre & didn't really make sense in the context of what he said about drake? like, i guess the idea of rap/r&b being "slash & burn" or w/e was sorta right, but it seems off to me to say that drake has avoided the fate of being cast off due to self-parody because he put out a "cogent" debut album by using the example of t-pain, who was actually a really coherent album artist

also i fail to see the connection b/w putting out a "cogent" album & not randomly losing favor w/in the industry & public

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:37 (thirteen years ago) link

the alicia joint is def very good -- would actually like to see drake put more time into writing r&b for other artists

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:39 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah otm. also t-pain was never really taken as a rapper like drake usually is, just as a dude who raps sometimes like lil jon or pharrell or something xp

o let's not do it and say we did (The Reverend), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:40 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, the example of lil wayne wouldn't fit for brandon's thesis because wayne hasn't fallen off, but he's clearly the direct lineage for drake's sing/rap thing, and more importantly, being ubiquitous all over other ppl's singles in both fashions

as for singles, t-pain raps on "kiss kiss" & "shawty get loose" but most of his rapping was on like random remixes that only nerds heard

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess there are a few others that he raps on ("go girl" etc) but i think he's still classified more like ne-yo, the-dream or akon than wayne or kanye

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 10:48 (thirteen years ago) link

They did this last year but Vice's albums of the year chart is usually as funny as their tips of the year spoof.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Monday, 13 December 2010 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Would be funnier if it were more accurate I think. Also they've actually reused, almost word for word, some of the jokes from last year.
