pointless request but can we talk about music instead of each other because frankly this bullshit meta sniping is what makes you all incredibly tedious and useless

Pop Matters singles list includes the title track from the Roots' How I Got Over. the album was released in June 2010 but that song was released as a single in June 2009.

had a good run for awhile there

can you all just keep insulting each other cuz i'd actually prefer that to talk of the arcade fire and kanye.

scott seward, Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link

let's all talk about Vampire Weekend instead. i like 'em.

hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:15 (thirteen years ago) link

xp Rock-A-Rolla wrote back and said Reckless carries it. I've looked there before with no luck. I had 'em hold the Oct/Nov issue for me. I assume the one with the year-end list is Dec/Jan? It isn't there yet.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

aQ might get it?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:27 (thirteen years ago) link

They said the Young Gods cover with the list should be in U.S. stores in 2 wks. Does it have some good write-ups with each album?

Picked up Decibel last night, and both Ivar and Grutle of Enslaved put Motorpsycho in their top 5 (both also had Iron Maiden and Shining). It's not for everyone, but if you're into psych 'n' prog, I recommend it.

I gotta have respect for anyone who listens to more stuff than me (which seems to max out at 500 a year lately). I'd imagine if I had to listen to more than 1,000 new albums a year my habits would change and I would be less patient for growers, and more into stuff that spreads immediately with the hooks and the melodies.

there are plenty of artists at this point for whom 'the collected eps by...' has been replaced by 'the collected mp3s by'

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Thursday, 9 December 2010 23:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I think Cam1ll3 D0der0 is on some ironic ish with that. She's a Village Voice web editor and she calls herself a "Juggalo expert" on her twitter bio. She also wrote one of those big pieces about "lol look at the juggalos gathering".

did people ever refer to "the collected EPs by" an artist as an album or are you talking about stuff that actually was compiled/reissued on one release?

Local Hardman (some dude), Thursday, 9 December 2010 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

The process of recycling Styrofoam

The process of recycling Styrofoam involves feeding the collected EPS foam through conveyor belts into a shredding machine.

The shredded EPS foam is then transferred to a plastic extruder where the foam is exposed to heat and pressure to melt the EPS foam. Subsequently, the melted EPS foam passes out through a small outlet at the end of the extruder and solidifies into a continuous form.

This form of EPS can then be easily transported to the required factories for remolding (again using heat and pressure) into its new EPS products.

Check out this video on the Styrofoam recycling process.

fyi, camille's piece was really good in that it was one of the few that wasn't all condescendingly "lol juggalos"

SBin & The Witch (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 9 December 2010 23:24 (thirteen years ago) link

That is true Whiney, I had her piece mixed up with another one until I looked at it again.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 9 December 2010 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link

it was still basically "lol juggalos" but not terribly condescending in the process

is there any list out there that includes "miami 2 ibiza" aside from mine? like, is there any dance crit site that takes populist dance music seriously whatsoever? it seems like theres some wild double standard w/ rap where everyone takes Drake soooo seriously, and dance music where we're only reviewing obscure german 12"

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:30 (thirteen years ago) link

James Blake aside, that Juno list is great. The Midnight Magic/Jacques Renault record is a jam and the whole Permanent Vacation comp it comes from is ace.

Virtually every other song with Tinie Tempah on this year is better than Miami 2 Ibiza.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 December 2010 00:31 (thirteen years ago) link

miami 2 ibiza rules wtf

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link

im not concerned w/ tinie tempah im concerned w/ big populist dance music that critics pretend doesnt exist

like taio cruz?

I think dance music criticism and populist dance music do sometimes stray closer to one another but they're very far apart indeed at the moment, if only because the David Guetta/Swedish House Mafia school is so awful. They were much closer when people like Mylo or Felix or Zombie Nation were having huge hits.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 December 2010 00:36 (thirteen years ago) link

& i dont mean 'populist' as in popular with fools gold fans who are willing to put up w/ 4th rate strictly rhythm bites but 'populist' as in, crosses over to huge dance audiences

you could say the same thing about rap right now, except that for some reason, (and im not saying this is true on ilx), critics at certain places that i might even write for are still repping for some super lame pop rap

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah but a significant number of rap writers have spent the best part of the decade fighting the corner for mainstream/commercial rap whereas in dance music its more about crate digging and highlighting the best stuff for DJs. The critical landscape is totally different.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 December 2010 00:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Mostly amateur DJs I think...
