"making" a joke

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, but the second I admit to liking anything on anticon. people start accusing me of a being a PM Dawn fan.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:36 (thirteen years ago) link

the blatantly overstated and hyperbolic comment I made about SALEM and racism way upthread that everyone ignored

I almost posted it on ILEpitaphs!

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:36 (thirteen years ago) link

"laughing" or lol or something

But seriously folks, some albums if suddenly marketed to indie sites and reviewers/critics would get more acclaim, others might still get ignored (not enough genre specialist reviewers interested in stuff that's not hipster friendly)

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:38 (thirteen years ago) link

what's wrong w/ being a PM Dawn fan??

xxp

I'm sending KRS One to your house

pretty wild that this Kanye record is the first record since, like, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot to really getting the indie sites to agree that the major labels sometimes make records better than we do

that's an interesting interpretation of the acclaim of YHF considering that the whole narrative of that album's success was "Warner Bros didn't know what a masterpiece they had on their hands, those bastards!"

Local Hardman (some dude), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

also "MBDTF's critical consensus is so much stronger than any previous Kanye record" is almost as shaky a premise as your "Fuck You is the most instantly acclaimed pop single since Hey Ya" thesis.

Local Hardman (some dude), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm saying the critical consensus on indie sites like Pfork and Sgum is stronger this time out. The RS/Spin/Pazz crew was always in full force

dr. harbl's zing-along blog (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost, fine then, chance to ca. 2001 Strokes/Kid A

dr. harbl's zing-along blog (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Im taking this the opposite of Whiney -- most of these (strawmen) ppl think that kanye is just way better than all pop, smarter than all the other major label crap etc (peep the paste review) -- I don't think it has stereogum readers reconsidering the merits of major label pop

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link

It's his bon iver record!

Plus is this really getting more indie love than late reg?

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link

hasn't kanye always been the token pop/major label act in these lists?

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't really believe many people on the staff of these indie sites have bothered with many other major label hip-hop/r&b/pop albums at all

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

antipop consortium are fantastic, new record's great and they killed it when i saw em a year or two ago

What new record? There's one this year?

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I don't see what's new about it. Critics have loved him since day one. He doesn't represent major-label hip hop anymore than Outkast do.

The baby boomers have defined everything once and for all (Dorianlynskey), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Indie crits always loved Kanye but there was always this understood agreement that we has never better than Arcade Fire/AnCo/Antony/etc. I mean, when he tops the Pfork list its gonna be the first major label record to be #1 since Kid A, right? (i'm not gonna fact check this, so)

dr. harbl's zing-along blog (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Kanye only behind Sufjan in pitchfork's 2005

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:08 (thirteen years ago) link

among whom?! like seriously NAME NAMES. i certainly wasn't party to it and want no part of it, or indeed of anyone who actually signed up to it

Great way to use your music section, Washington Post. Is stephen ilxor the editor over there now?

dr. harbl's zing-along blog (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link

who the fuck commissioned that

who the fuck PITCHED that

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

lol with Anco at #7 and Antony at #5 behind Kanye on that list

i would credit any minor bump in indie-love for kanye more to do with lazy crits feeling safe in raves than some sort of increased comfort with major label wares

da croupier, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i done it.

meaning pfork's 2005 album list i mean: http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/6222-top-50-albums-of-2005/5/

Given the amount of tedious handwringing already should we push the Pitchfork list off into its own slurry ditch thread or something?

Curious what people think the most critically popular album of the year that you wouldn't have guessed would be one of the most critically popular albums of the year is

I mean more in a "hey who thought they'd step up their game" way than a "wtf is wavves doing here" way

these lists of halfway decent music that is better promoted than other music that is as good if not better are vv informative tbqf

funny to have spoon ride caboose at number 25 in the av club after their Remember The 90s guy claimed they're underappreciated for being so consistently perfect

also, da croup, my mind is still blown that anyone would give salem the time of day, but i should probably stop harping on that.

step 1: take rolling stone, spin, mojo, stereogum, etc. lists
step 2: shuffle albums, relist in different order
step 3: put kanye back on top since his album is perfect

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i dunno...RS top 5 article mentioned glowingly his anti blue state lyrics on a couple of songs, pretty unrepentant and harsh shit like they say, his zings against tofu and pricey wine in los angeles are pretty tough.

rolling tabs on Kanye #1s

Vibe
Spin
Rolling Stone

Onion A/V

this is kind of unprecendented!
