But seriously folks, some albums if suddenly marketed to indie sites and reviewers/critics would get more acclaim, others might still get ignored (not enough genre specialist reviewers interested in stuff that's not hipster friendly)

that's an interesting interpretation of the acclaim of YHF considering that the whole narrative of that album's success was "Warner Bros didn't know what a masterpiece they had on their hands, those bastards!"

also "MBDTF's critical consensus is so much stronger than any previous Kanye record" is almost as shaky a premise as your "Fuck You is the most instantly acclaimed pop single since Hey Ya" thesis.

i'm saying the critical consensus on indie sites like Pfork and Sgum is stronger this time out. The RS/Spin/Pazz crew was always in full force

Yeah, I don't see what's new about it. Critics have loved him since day one. He doesn't represent major-label hip hop anymore than Outkast do.

Indie crits always loved Kanye but there was always this understood agreement that we has never better than Arcade Fire/AnCo/Antony/etc. I mean, when he tops the Pfork list its gonna be the first major label record to be #1 since Kid A, right? (i'm not gonna fact check this, so)

i would credit any minor bump in indie-love for kanye more to do with lazy crits feeling safe in raves than some sort of increased comfort with major label wares
