Ah, I thought maybe I just didn't know the correct button to engage cockpit view. Can't believe they locked that down.

I keep a sketch book by my side when playing and have filled pages with doodles and whiney complaints.

This is awesome

A brand new 150Mb update! I can't do shit until it downloads and installs now. PS3 is seriously the worst fucking console ever.

unintentional boob pic (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 11:15 (thirteen years ago) link

haha i actually got hit with that right after the 45min GT installation, when it asks you to login to PSN. which required quitting GT, then installing the update, then starting GT again..

never managed to get into Prologue (or Prelude, w/e) so not sure whether I should bother with this one

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I personally suspect that this one might be best for people who haven't played a GT in a long time.

as someone who fits that description i looove the fact that my old favorite tracks from GT1 are still in there, i.e. Deep Forest

the whole claiming-your-prize-car thing is weird.. you have to "click" on Car Delivery, then choose the car, then say "Yes" when it asks if you want to "use" it, then it... dramatically appears out of the darkness and THEN it's finally in your garage. and then you have to go back and select the car you were previously driving if you want to continue driving that one.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

but like... whatever

i chose the Civic Type R with my initial money and i have been smoking the competition

also, i should note that i soooo love to drive like an asshole

the drafting training was hella fun

a few more thoughts (as I near 1,000 miles)...

I don't who thought it was a good idea to put development resources into the b-Spec mode - what a waste. I put it on when I'm cooking dinner or something to earn a few credits, but it just seems so... why? Who finds it fun to (basically) watch a game play itself?

I don't understand why these games don't scale your opponents in the races. It seems like either my car isn't good enough to compete (even though it qualifies for the race) or it is overpowered and the racing feels more like a drive in the country on a Sunday afternoon & almost as completely free of challenge as b-Spec mode. It's really hard to find the sweet spot, especially as you only have the funds to buy so many different cars. This could easily be fixed if the game just loaded up cars that performed similar to whatever car you picked.

The driving model in this game, with all assists off, is REALLY good, comparable to the best PC sims, so I don't mind so much that it seems more like a driving game than a racing game most of the time. It's fun to drive.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 9 December 2010 03:57 (thirteen years ago) link

when you say "assists" what do you mean? would that include automatic shifting?

i hear what you're saying re difficulty scaling - i'm either blowing away the field or my car just isn't good enough. but if memory of GT1 serves, eventually the races will get harder and i'll be playing clubman special stage for the 10th time in a row just to eke out the win i need to get [x] car that i can then sell to buy the semi-racing suspension etc

have won most of the beginner races but can't find any classic cars in the dealerships to buy..

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 10:20 (thirteen years ago) link

putting all this resource management crap into driving games is a huge pain in the ass. ok, fine, if you want to lock some cars until i've progressed a certain amount, go ahead. don't make me have to earn money and visit dealerships and all that wahoosie when all i want to do is DRIVE.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:01 (thirteen years ago) link

ledge - if you just want to drive you can always back out to the main menu and just do arcade races (nice selection of cars you can use in there too). no credits or $ for those races though :(

when you say "assists" what do you mean? would that include automatic shifting?

For me, yeah, I've usually got everything off in driving options, no driving line, no traction control, no ASM or ABS, manual trans and this gives you a lot more control and a better overall feeling (but I play with a wheel, so that makes it easier). I've also gotten used to it in other sims like iRacing (that have no assists), so to play with 'em really messes with my head. It's sort of a drag that when you switch cars or events it keeps turning some of those assists back on so you have to remember to keep going back to the driving options before a race and turn 'em off. I've had a few races where I forget the assists got reset and left the default on TC:5 ABS:1 and it felt like driving on rails to me - can't imagine how pointless it would feel with the even higher level of assists available.

At the least, even if you're using a joypad controller, you should learn to use manual transmission as that will give you a lot more control and speed through corners & you will feel a lot more engaged in the driving.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:41 (thirteen years ago) link

hmmm... will consider. i didn't even know those options existed tbh (apart from manual trans of course).

for a beefy challenge it can be pretty fun to buy an overpowered FR car and do NO mods to it at all.. can be pretty tough to win without sliding all over the track.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't want to lecture from the mountain tops, but if you're only going to turn off one assist, PLEASE turn off the racing line... you will find the driving much more fun the less crutches you use, but that one is the worst & totally ruins immersion in racing games, imo. Even with all the assists off, the fact that you can't turn off the HUD is also still a HUGE assist as you don't have to really learn the tracks or even braking points as there is no way to stop the game from telling you when to brake or downshift with a giant red flashing number. Also always having the map on screen should more than make up for no driving line even if you don't take any time to learn the track.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

oh yeah i definitely turned off the racing line!! in fact i thought it was a bug that it was there, in real races.

i actually find the map fucks with my concentration and memorization - i need to know the bends as they actually appear, not as i anticipate them appearing due to the map

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

like, i'll be looking at the map, going, ah OK now i'll get ready for this turn and boom it's already upon me and i'm fucked

the oddness of GT is a large part of its charm. completely bonkers menu design, the downtempo smooth jazz aesthetic, the baroque installation mechanics--at this point, like 12 years or whatever after the first GT, this shit is soothing.

the intermediate top gear challenge, with the lotus that floats around the track like a hot wheel, is a motherfucker as well. haven't even hit bronze in that one.

The samba bus top gear thing was driving me crazy too - so many tries and so many disqualifieds. I've got 2nd place twice though (still want that gold, but it's maybe too infuriating to bother with).

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 12 December 2010 03:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Question for you chaps and chappettes: I'm going to pick up either this or F1 this week because I've been hankering for a racing/driving game. Any thoughts as to which one I should get? (I'll ask the same in the F1 thread and see if that gets a different response).

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:03 (thirteen years ago) link

i've never played F1 but GT5 is an incredible bargain when you consider it's many, many racing games in one - NASCAR, karts, rally, etc - and within those genres are so many different sorts of challenges

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks Tracer!

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:30 (thirteen years ago) link

played it at a friends house over xmas, to be honest it was a lot better than i expected. tho wasn't impressed visually, there's a lot in there to keep the racer occupied. Never quite got around to seeing the rain courses, but on youtube they look pretty spectacular.

I think I'll get this, but might need a wheel to appreciate it.

question about the nascar, rally, and karting etc. i only really saw a rather crappy couple of races in each. Do they expand to proper races/leagues/cups ?

No.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 15:38 (thirteen years ago) link

On the F1 thread Jeff you said:

With Gran Turismo I feel like it's much harder to have a good race - it's more of a driving and car collecting grindathon game (because your car is either too weak or too powerful in 90% of the racing you do - there rarely is that balanced, tight racing - maybe except if you set it up just right in online)

In my limited time playing GT5 this is sadly true. I wish there were like, a walkthrough or something, designed not for maximising points or speeding through the game but for having competitors at the appropriate level for your stage in the game and car quality..

thing with gt5 was that is seems really easy to just tune up your car if its not winning races. i remember older gt's being much harder about this, and in the end you were racing the same tracks over and over again just to get some money to tune up.

i guess what i'm saying is that it's both a good and bad thing.

meh.

racing games have a hard enough time equalizing things even among the AI pack, let alone between you and them. there was always only 1 car you had to worry about, really.

goole, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I haven't been playing this as much due to other distractions, but I am at a point where I would almost be tempted to enter a full unlock cheat code just to do a cool arcade mode race once in a while.

Also, I really want a wheel peripheral. If I could afford to plunk down $100 for one I think it would breathe new life into this game.

Does such a cheat even exist? This would probably seal the deal for me buying the game.
