take one for the team
curren$y isn't going platinum any time soon
how many rappers are?
― The Reverend, Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link
tech n9ne apparently!
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:00 (thirteen years ago) link
what??
The album sold 17,000 copies in its first week and 5,000 copies during its second. Record sales reached upwards of 22,000 copies in only 2 weeks.

thats techn9ne's last record
lol @ "only"
Thirteen years and counting

The album debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200 selling 30,326 copies in its first week.[9]
thats his 09 record

n/m i got confused -- tech n9ne scanned his millionth album w/ 'killer'
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:02 (thirteen years ago) link
i thought the whole album went platinum independently
regardless, talking about billboard numbers is grade-A stupid & pointless in this debate.
that's the problem tho w/ these arguments is that if we can't rely on what little quantitative numbers that we have, it's just one person's word vs the other's & it's hard to find the opposite argument to be legitimate
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:04 (thirteen years ago) link
btw i'm not sticking by the thing about tech n9ne being more popular than curren$y
haha holy shit at this long drawn out convo about who's more popular. Wiz totally is -- was before "Black & Yellow" dropped but that definitely has widened the gap a bit
― My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro) (some dude), Friday, December 3, 2010 5:01 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink
what are u basing it on? i agree after bny that wiz pulled ahead (& the numbers bear this out obv)
i still think curren$y is about as popular as one can possibly get while still being 'underground'
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, December 3, 2010 7:56 PM (5 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink
i'm basing it on how much i hear about Wiz from rap guys i know IRL or on twitter, how often he does big sold out shows in the area, other stuff like Wiz being on the official remix to a huge Trey Songz single even before "Black & Yellow" was even out. Wiz & Curren$y are definitely both pretty popular together and individually but it feels very clear whose mainstream profile is higher.
― some dude, Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link
i dunno i think this debate has actually fleshed out a better idea of how popular these dudes are, i feel 'more informed' having participated
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:06 (thirteen years ago) link
me too, just saying
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:07 (thirteen years ago) link
i wonder why curren$y isn't touring -- obvi if wiz keeps up a consistent tour schedule thats going to affect things too
i think wiz is probably also easier to rap along with
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:07 (thirteen years ago) link
i mean, curren$y is touring, but why he isnt doing wiz-style national touring
i mean hes gotta be bigger then effin nipsey hussle
yeah probably
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:08 (thirteen years ago) link
should have a x < y < z < a < b < c argument about which middleweight rappers are more popular than others
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:08 (thirteen years ago) link
we haven't incorporated youtube views into this debate yet lol

Yes, entirely. This is a big part of his appeal vs Curren$y. Doesn't make him a better rapper, but it counts for a lot.
― altered boners (rennavate), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:14 (thirteen years ago) link
but yeah, wiz has been touring like crazy
― The Reverend, Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:40 (thirteen years ago) link
the wiz/curren$y mix was my favorite of the curren$y mixtapes but I tried Kush & OJ and couldn't get with a whole mix of just wiz. it was alright just ... too much I guess. their styles go good together imo.

I really liked the first Pilot Talk but damn, Pilot Talk II is an improvement on all levels.
I liked the smooth production, but if there was a 'fault' at all with Pilot Talk, it's that sometimes the production was too relaxing and made me almost tune out the rapping. I think this feels more like a proper hip-hop album overall.
Curren$y brings a lot of tude too. "Fuck yo system, I get paid without it"....

I would probably agree with that if Fiend wasn't on it, don't like his verse... that beat is amazing tho.
I really like "Montreux" off of PT2, has a similar vibe to "Flying Iron". Also "Fashionably Late"

i play that track with killa kyleon a lot, "4 hours 20 minutes". scrunch up yr face.
― zvookster, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 03:35 (thirteen years ago) link
i think i like PT1 a little better. not by much tho. to my mind each enhances the other, like halves of a double album...the sharper caffeinated "proper hip hop album" foregrounding curren$y's lyrics versus the hazy expansive potluck with more emphasis on beats
