no perspective but our own perspective, y'know? I'm not trying to cop like i have DEEP KNOWLEDGE from working in the field. Anecdotal quickly turns into fait accompli especially when you hear it often enough.

i don't like 'in my word of young ppl' arguments because theoretically i could make any shit up about my world of young ppl to support my argument & no one could actually verify it's truthfulness -- also sample sizes

right, it relies on us trusting that the other person isnt being disingenuous, and i would trust most of you dudes to explain honest anecdotes. its one thing to use it statistically, as if it represents broad popularity, but if you're just using it as supporting evidence that ilx =/= the world i dont see any problem with it

(tho to be fair, i really do have DEEP KNOWLEDGE from working in the field)

old LOKO heads (forksclovetofu), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:55 (thirteen years ago) link

but my anecdotal, and jordan's, was used to imply there is truth outside of received wisdom, not to create more received wisdom. its about critique, not creation of myth

imo, ppl bringing their own real world perspectives to these discussions is valuable & necessary, not something to be avoided, and its too bad that al's cattiness made ppl think there's something wrong with it

yeah i'm not saying that i'm wary of ppl making up fake arguments -- it's more of a "anecdotes are like assholes..." thing

haha holy shit at this long drawn out convo about who's more popular. Wiz totally is -- was before "Black & Yellow" dropped but that definitely has widened the gap a bit

deej has a point about his unexpected popularity though: two editors at the student paper (one of whom is a white Colombian kid lol) were shocked that I knew about Curren$y. They'd loved his mixtapes for months.

You're a music critic, Al, that's hardly representative of the average rap fan. And they're writers of the student paper, thus much more likely to know this kind of stuff, too.

I should have said: these guys do not really follow music at all except for hip-hop. The Colombian dude is -- heh -- recording an EP over the break.

what are u basing it on? i agree after bny that wiz pulled ahead (& the numbers bear this out obv)

i still think curren$y is about as popular as one can possibly get while still being 'underground'

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i think his national appeal should also not be underestimated -- hes decidedly not a regional artist

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:56 (thirteen years ago) link

& finally, any crowd that jumped on wiz for 'say yeah' has to be minute at best -- he doesnt even play that at his shows now, and when he says "im about to take it back!!!" he still performs songs that came out after "say yeah"

i thought the whole album went platinum independently

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:02 (thirteen years ago) link

regardless, talking about billboard numbers is grade-A stupid & pointless in this debate.

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:02 (thirteen years ago) link

that's the problem tho w/ these arguments is that if we can't rely on what little quantitative numbers that we have, it's just one person's word vs the other's & it's hard to find the opposite argument to be legitimate

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:04 (thirteen years ago) link

btw i'm not sticking by the thing about tech n9ne being more popular than curren$y

i'm basing it on how much i hear about Wiz from rap guys i know IRL or on twitter, how often he does big sold out shows in the area, other stuff like Wiz being on the official remix to a huge Trey Songz single even before "Black & Yellow" was even out. Wiz & Curren$y are definitely both pretty popular together and individually but it feels very clear whose mainstream profile is higher.

some dude, Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link

i dunno i think this debate has actually fleshed out a better idea of how popular these dudes are, i feel 'more informed' having participated

me too, just saying

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:07 (thirteen years ago) link

i wonder why curren$y isn't touring -- obvi if wiz keeps up a consistent tour schedule thats going to affect things too

i think wiz is probably also easier to rap along with

Yes, entirely. This is a big part of his appeal vs Curren$y. Doesn't make him a better rapper, but it counts for a lot.
