okay i just dropped a line to someone who knows who told me that wiz sold out best buy theater in nyc (about 2100)
so yeah, i'm really wrong about that apparently.
currensy did a recent ny gig and they managed about 500

first popular appearances i should say -- obvi he was rapping on local tapes before that

btw deej did touch on something that we overlooked but definitely has a ton to do w/ this and that's that wiz has sex appeal -- i think he probably has tons more female fans than curren$y has -- he has that star appeal but also a safeness about him that could appeal to a large audience

curren$y is just a dude that raps -- a dude that raps great of course, but still

i didn't want to bring up my anecdote cuz i don't find anecdotes to be particularly useful in these types of arguments (cuz it brings us into 'my world of young people' stuff) but wiz sold out the biggest venue in my school in like less than a week LAST SEMESTER & when i went to the facebook events page all the comments were "omg!!!" type shit from girls

ill give a pass on the LA show for including nipsey

wiz did a fairly good size sold out show in portland at the beginning of september (before black and yellow took off).

el rey has a capacity of 700

the wiz show at nokia was november 13 so yeah.

and it was sold out like a week before the show.

er, best buy i mean. they changed names.

this is sort of an abstract point, but wiz found it profitable & sensible enough to turn down a spot opening for drake's tour -- i think that speaks to the size & strength of his fanbase right now

um theres nothing wrong with 'in my world of young people' and i dont understand what you're actually criticizing about it, because youre bringing it up for the same reason i was ... its an effective way of explaining to ppl how things are outside the ilx bubble?? if one of you would like to break down the fallacy of 'in my world of young ppl' id appreciate it though.

right, it relies on us trusting that the other person isnt being disingenuous, and i would trust most of you dudes to explain honest anecdotes. its one thing to use it statistically, as if it represents broad popularity, but if you're just using it as supporting evidence that ilx =/= the world i dont see any problem with it

(tho to be fair, i really do have DEEP KNOWLEDGE from working in the field)

but my anecdotal, and jordan's, was used to imply there is truth outside of received wisdom, not to create more received wisdom. its about critique, not creation of myth

imo, ppl bringing their own real world perspectives to these discussions is valuable & necessary, not something to be avoided, and its too bad that al's cattiness made ppl think there's something wrong with it

deej has a point about his unexpected popularity though: two editors at the student paper (one of whom is a white Colombian kid lol) were shocked that I knew about Curren$y. They'd loved his mixtapes for months.

You're a music critic, Al, that's hardly representative of the average rap fan. And they're writers of the student paper, thus much more likely to know this kind of stuff, too.

I should have said: these guys do not really follow music at all except for hip-hop. The Colombian dude is -- heh -- recording an EP over the break.

what are u basing it on? i agree after bny that wiz pulled ahead (& the numbers bear this out obv)

i still think curren$y is about as popular as one can possibly get while still being 'underground'

i think his national appeal should also not be underestimated -- hes decidedly not a regional artist

& finally, any crowd that jumped on wiz for 'say yeah' has to be minute at best -- he doesnt even play that at his shows now, and when he says "im about to take it back!!!" he still performs songs that came out after "say yeah"
